Anyone think Brent Venables regrets leaving Clemson?

7

Mar 28, 2023, 1:09 PM

I mean he had it made down here. Amazing house, beautiful scenery, passionate fan base that thought he was godlike. AND a large multimillion dollar contract.
Now he moves to okrahomer and half the fans still hate him for leaving the first time and the other half already want him fired. He’s under ridiculous amount of stress and pressure to meet expectations that he probably can’t meet.

Makes you wonder if it was all really worth it for him.

He regrets it all the way to the bank.

In the rear view mirror. Forget him! He’s made his bed and hope it works for him.

Don't sound so ungrateful. You should be happy for the man.

I think BV will be fine in Oklahoma. He's a good coach and will get things moving in the right direction in the next few years. But, even if he doesn't, he's got a fully guaranteed contract. There is literally zero risk for him. Let's say he gets fired in 2 years. He still gets all of that contract money. And, he would have his pick of DC jobs for any school in America.

I’d say he is the football version of Monte. Great assistant coach, not a head coach.

Way too early for that. His cupboard was bare when Lincoln left. He will be fine.

He wouldn't be Brent Venables if he gave up so quickly.

9

Mar 28, 2023, 1:27 PM

I doubt the question has entered his mind. Some things have changed a lot about football but Brent's superpower is dealing with a variety of circumstances. Next to Dabo I respect BV more than anyone currently coaching today. I would fire my own mother (RIP) and hire him.

I'm sure he misses a great deal of people at Clemson who came to be like family to him, but I expect he's confident in his career choice. Money aside he gets the opportunity to call the shots now which appears to get something he has wanted to do. As far as the fan base, I don't think there were many if any at all who held any grudge towards his previous departure. When he arrived on campus to be the new head coach there was fanfare worthy of a papal visit.

I sure miss him. I just don't think Goodwin has the same juice BV had. If anything else I'm sure it got the guys hyped up seeing him so animated on the sideline. I bet in the back of his mind, with all the expectations there's a subtle regret that he left upstate SC. Then he checks his bank account and pats himself on the back lol

The only regret successful people typically have

5

...is not trying.

Fear of the unknown paralyzes ordinary people, but Venables knew what he was getting into. It was his self described "dream job". Even if it doesn't work out I suspect he won't regret it.

No, because he’s now a head coach and he’s a competitor.

Mar 28, 2023, 5:05 PM

He also has $$$ (he was making amazing here but not what he’s making now).

I love Coach Venables and I’m rooting hard for him! I hope we see a OU Clemson playoff game real soon!
Also gives me a team to root for in the SEC next year. (If Coach V is still there)

Because of who he is as a person and coach, I would take him back in a heartbeat!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it may have briefly entered his mind last season when losing

3

Mar 28, 2023, 5:43 PM

But in the big scheme of things he is happy with his decision.

Even if he flames out miserably in a few seasons, he will get a high level DC position as his next step if he wants it.

Also, when they do the live action movie for "He-Man"- he is already on the shortlist to play Skeletor. So there is that to look forward to if he takes a break from coaching in the future.

Re: Anyone think Brent Venables regrets leaving Clemson?

Mar 28, 2023, 10:05 PM

It always surprises me when folks mention money as a big factor as I don’t think it matters. The man was already a multimillionaire and coaches have limited time to to enjoy it given their schedule. Does it make a difference to a guy with a net worth of $10M if he makes $2.5M or $7M per year? I think the only factor is the challenge of being a HC to see if he has what it takes to be the top dog.

Re: Anyone think Brent Venables regrets leaving Clemson?

Mar 29, 2023, 1:49 PM

He actually does regret everything but the bank account.

Even that is questionable when he thinks it's only money and it's not even really that much more after all is said and done

He did have a really good recruiting class, though and he might be alright in a couple of seasons. As long as he doesn't play that Greenville High boy ever again in an important game. Man, that dude had issues in that one game I won't mention, but the scored was something like 49-0 in favor of their opponent and OU fans were so upset. I love those days, personally.

He will be alright and as head coach he doesn't have to worry about ALWAYS being late with his calls and his star LB yelling at him in front of the world.

I'm also thinking he regrets not getting plastic surgery before he got so incredibly busy. Dude is butt ugly. That was tolerable when he was an assistant, but as a head guy, not so much.
He's worse in real life and do wives ever put paper bags over heads before intercourse

Re: Anyone think Brent Venables regrets leaving Clemson?

Mar 29, 2023, 1:54 PM

Well he might end up back here if he has another year like last year. Would not surprise me to see Dabo bring him back and make him co-DC until Goodwin gets an offer elsewhere.

I'm sure he has zero regrets

Mar 29, 2023, 11:06 PM

CBV is doing what he's dreamed of for so long. Regardless of how things turn out, his days as a head coach at OU will end up being (in his mind) the peak of his career. This and the money make the OP's question not even worthy of discussion IMO.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Anyone think Brent Venables regrets leaving Clemson?

Mar 30, 2023, 6:48 AM

I'm guessing the answer is no. He's making a lot more $$, he's had a good recruiting class and he's closer to home. I imagine he has a pretty nice house in Norman also. As a head coach, the stress level is certainly higher but he seems like a pretty tough guy and can handle it. As I recall, the Oklahoma fans weren't crazy about his successor at defensive coordinator when he left for Clemson. College fandom tends to be quite fickle. If he doesn't show improvement this year, things are likely to change...

My daughter served Dabo, BV and Brent V. She would tell me how the enjoyed the atmosphere and working environment at Clemson. I posted a week or so ago that some great coordinators are not cut out to be a HC. I believe BV’s is one of those guys who is an awesome coordinator but I just don’t think he is the type who as a HC can build a program to compete for NC‘s.

Money is not everything one should consider when changing jobs.

Re: Anyone think Brent Venables regrets leaving Clemson?

Apr 15, 2023, 9:43 AM

OU salary as HC is $7MM; CU DC salary was $2.5MM. Four years for Venables at OU = 11 years at Clemson from an earnings perspective. I cannot see a scenario where he would regret this move...
