Anyone notice all the trash talking?

Sep 18, 2022, 8:52 AM

Seen it in every game so far, but last night might have been the worst.

I keep seeing guys make a play and then stand over an opponent and chirp at him. DJ has done it several times. And then Randall was doing it last night when he got in.

Kids need the coach carter speech: “Are you crazy? What is wrong with you? Since when is winning not enough? Playing hard not enough? No, you have to humiliate your opponent . . .”

Come on tigers. You’ve been playing teams that are vastly inferior. Shut up and beat their butts like you’re supposed to. That trash talking stuff is south carolina will muschamp doo doo. And besides just making you look like a jerk, you can (and should) get a big penalty for it. Just stop.

Also, Will Shipley, dude chill. Love how you run. Hate how you act. La Tech is bad and you look like you’re on crack and about to have an aneurysm celebrating a score. It’s obnoxious. Watch how etienne acted when he scored. Be a man.

Side note, Ruke is a beast and deserves a ton of credit for the work he’s done while others have been out.

What does it sound like when they chirp?

I’d agree with most of what you said except for our opponents being vastly inferior.

You are ridiculous. Shipley screaming on sideline after score is passionate, motivating to other players.

Only reason why it bothers me is that it an draw a penalty. I saw it happen in a couple games this weekend.

There is a difference in celebrating after a good play and trash talking an opponent. I didn't see Ship trash talking LA Tech. And I really don't see it happening often with Clemson. I do agree if it does happen it's not pretty and Dabo should stop it. On the other hand, everyone excited and jumping around after a score is well placed college like enthusiasm,

Also you have no idea what the other team was saying. Looked to me like every incomplete pass the dbs had to make it look like they just made the greatest play ever when in reality our guy just didn't make the play he should have.

I agree 100%.
Was thinking the same thing throughout the game.
These are greatly inferior teams. Do your job and shut up. You’re expected to tackle the opponent. I was embarrassed and frustrated by the lack of sportsmanship and class this team is currently displaying. This displays a lack of leadership at the top. You don’t see Bama players behaving that way. Totally disgusting.

A thought occurred to me thanks to some others referring to sportsmanship: if i was watching the game and saw my kid barking at a guy on the ground or losing his mind on the sideline, we would definitely be having a conversation about it. Just flat out not gonna have it at any level of competitive sports. 100% unacceptable.

You and I are dinosaurs. Kids grow up seeing their idols trash talking. They used to just trash talk to the guy, now they escalate it to overt actions that can be seen by everyone. They grew up in a culture where "overt physical intimidation" is applauded. So, they do it.

It cost Purdue their game against Cuse yesterday. But, that's OK. Getting into someone's face or standing over him showing him you're tougher and meaner than he is is not only accepted, it's expected. It's applauded.

Welcome to America 2022. (I don't like it. It shouldn't happen. But, what do I know? I'm a dinosaur.)

ok guy that hasn't even broken 1000 points, I'm sure I truly believe you are an all in Clemson fan. By the way bet you could really stretch your legs at the stadium by halftime in the Willy B yesterday!

If things get too chippy, Dabo will give them a talk

Sep 18, 2022, 7:14 PM

I remember several years ago, things were getting ugly in Miami, Dabo kept the whole team out on the field for halftime and reminded them to play with class and that settled things down. So far I don't think we've had any unsportsmanlike penalties; players probably have a sense of where to draw the line. I don't think you're gonna be able to completely cut out trash-talking, it's just too prevalent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Far more unsettling to me

Sep 19, 2022, 8:51 AM

was the fact that their defenders were constantly draped all over our receivers but the only PI call was on us.

"Dabo crushed my soul." --- Classof09

It's a broad cultural thing . . . and it sucks . . .

Sep 19, 2022, 9:43 AM

I'm not saying the guys on our team or on any other who are doing these things are necessarily bad guys generally (relatively speaking - i.e. compared to the going rate for our culture), or anything like that, but there is a fairly generalized sense/attitude, and practice of routine forms of "low-level" narcissism in our culture that permeates all sorts of areas (social media, sports celebrations, you fill in the blank). I'm not saying we all need to be buttoned-up stoics, but rather than a measured healthy pride and an enthusiastic celebratory disposition, folks habitually posture and angle to pump themselves up in a rather childish ways - they go the extra mile to worship at their own "culture of me" alter. Frankly it's gross and boring/unimpressive as well. Again, the guys on our team are par for the course w/ this stuff, so their no worse than anyone else, but the generalized tendency is juvenile and ubiquitous.

Remember the flexing DJ Swearinger pulled after his hit on Andre Ellington in 2010? I know this certainly a more "in your face" example than most, but in principle, this kind of thing (albeit usually in more subtle form) has become the norm. On a related note, I also hate it when players bend over backwards to eschew celebrating w/ their teammates to prioritize their own solo flexing, like when Shipley (vs. GT) literally pushed Davis Allen away so he could pull his Cam Newton superman shirt bit, which, frankly, anyway, is a bout as stale as a 6,000 year old loaf of bread.

It is what it is, but what it is worth properly labeling - Broad, cultural self-absorption tendencies, more contagious than the common cold.

As for you weak-minded dolts who are prepping to fire one of the two main "last-whiff" refuge of all those who have lost an argument - namely "OK Boomer," or the "get off my lawn" quip (both Nth-degree level weaksauce), I have two responses . . . (A) I'm much than Boomers, I'm just cut from a different cloth for my generation; and (B) Well - what the heck - GET OFF MY LAWN, ANYWAY!
