Anyone know how the aftermath of a kidney stone laser

Mar 30, 2021, 10:09 AM

is like? If the stone doesn't pass today, the Doc is going to insert one and run it all the way to my left kidney if he needs to and zap the darn thing and bring it out in pieces. I know I will be asleep but not sure about how the next few hours are like. The whole process seems weird - firing a laser inside your urinary tract - sheesh!!!

I don't have any info for you but I am hoping that things will go smoothly and the doc has steady hands.

If things don't go smoothly, hopefully one of your after effects is being able to shoot lasers back out after having one shot in.

I don't know the answer to your question, but from personal experience I can tell you that passing the stone in pieces will be a helluva lot less painful than passing it whole.

My doc used lithotripsy, which was very efficient in breaking up the stone from outside the body; piece of cake!

Lithotripsy uses sound waves to break up large kidney stones into smaller pieces. These sound waves are also called high-energy shock waves. The most common form of lithotripsy is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL).

Extracorporeal means “outside the body.” In this case, it refers to the source of the shock waves. During ESWL, a special machine called a lithotripter generates the shock waves. The waves travel into your body and break apart the stones.

Had that before and it only busted it up

Mar 30, 2021, 10:41 AM

to the point I had to have it done a second time and still passed large chunks as large as stones the doctor said they usually use the lithotripsy on. At least this way , the doctor says he will bring the stone out during the procedure and actually go on to the kidney and remove some smaller ones that are still there.

Feel for you brother. Thankfully, I have never had one but my mother and several friends have had them. Not a fun thing. The best to you and hope this will end your stone problems.

Had the procedure several years ago. In my situation the Dr pulled most of the pieces out. I had no trouble or pain passing any of the residuals if there were any. There were no after effects (that I recall) as far as the stones or kidney/urinary tract. The biggest discomfort for me was the "hangover" from the anesthesia and it felt like a massive hangover for several hours and I didn't get to enjoy any bourbon to warrant a hangover.

My wife has a history of kidney stones. She’s passed them without assistance, but also had the blasting procedure to break them up. However, one time the stone was too big and the blasting machine was not due back to the hospital for a few weeks. Can you believe our state (Michigan) requires the hospitals to share that equipment so it only comes around certain times during the month. Talk about too much government interference. Anyhow, the stone was blocking the fluid from passing so the surgeon had no choice but to go get it. Procedure went ok. She under the anesthesia. Can’t comment about the risks/complications involved.

Sadly, I've had more kidney stones than I can count...

Mar 30, 2021, 11:34 AM

and I've had them extracted every way imaginable. Feel free to t-mail me with any questions.

Hope it passes. If not I am sure they will be able take care of it. Either way ..... thinking about you and wishing you the best!

I did the sound blast procedure a few years ago. No pain from the surgery. but passing the thing was not fun

Man I feel for you Clover. Passing a kidney stone is awful.

Only time I’ve ever came close to throwing up due to pain.

AT that point now - I chose the Hydrocodone an hour

Mar 30, 2021, 3:02 PM

ago and should have taken the Oxycodone - pain hasn't been this bad since the ER on Friday.

Hydrocodone actually works better for me than the "stronger"

Mar 31, 2021, 5:59 PM

oxy does. Just another proof that I am a weird individual, I guess.

Neither dang one works on impinged nerves from herniated discs. Trust me on that.

Had 17 stones over the past 20 years. This procedure is the one you want. If the doctor says cystoscope, get ready to #### fire for 7 days, enjoy the relentless stabbing of your kidney, etc. The stint from the cystoscope will turn your hose in to a blunderbuss. Fingers crossed you won't have it. Litho is great, little discomfort, feels like someone is thumping you. They usually give you valium to keep you calm and relaxed. My last procedure was 3/1/2020, I literally fell asleep during the procedure. You'll do just fine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had that procedure in 1995... Yeesh... Awful way to start

Mar 30, 2021, 4:17 PM

the first day of college with a tube/stint the size of a phone cord left inside... I laughed at "blunderbuss," but that makes perfect since. My doc told me when I went to have the stint removed, "he didn't know if I liked beer, but if I did, start drinking a 6 pack if I ever started to feel the pain come back..." AN UNFORGETTABLE PAIN!!! The beer works... I drink it as a preventative measure ;) Good Luck Clover!

Re: Anyone know how the aftermath of a kidney stone laser

The way this works is that you will be asleep. Once that's done, the Urologist will pass a cystoscope from the ##### into the bladder. A very small diameter guide wire will then be passed from the opening of the ureter into the bladder all the way into the kidney. The cystoscope will then be removed and a small diameter ureteroscope will be navigated along side the guidewire to just below the stone. A very small LASER probe will then be passed through the ureteroscope and placed in contact with the stone under direct vision. The LASER will then be fired until the stone is well pulverized. Your doctor will be visualizing the LASER on the stone at all times to prevent injury to the ureter. The doctor may or may not fish out these small pieces. If the Urologist is going into your kidney, most likely another guidewire will be placed and a smaller diameter flexible scope will be advanced over the second guide wire and advanced into the kidney. The second guide wire is the removed and the LASER fiber is advanced through the flexible scope. The stones are then individually fragmented into dust or very small pieces.

At the end, most likely the Urologist will place a stent over the guide wire and deploy one end which has a coil in the kidney and another coil in the bladder. The stent runs the length of the ureter and keeps the ureter open and also allows for some passive dilation of the ureter. In a few days to a week the stent will be removed in the office by either cystoscopic retrieval or by pulling on a suture left on the stent which exits the #####.

The worst part of the procedure is dealing with the stent as it can cause urinary urgency and some discomfort in your back as you urinate. It will be normal to pass bloody urine.

One benefit is most likely your doctor will prescribe Pyridium to alleviate the burning in your urethra and at the tip of the #####. This will have you whizzing a beautiful ORANGE colored urine. Go Tigers and good luck. This is generally a very successful procedure with minimal risk for complications.

Good luck Clover!

Hi Clover, I do not work for Amazon nor Planetary Herbals but perhaps I may suggest the following, if not too late:

I have had two laser treatments for kidney stones

Mar 31, 2021, 4:15 PM

For two or three days after the procedure, you will feel as if you have to urinate constantly. In my two procedures, doctor left a stent in the urinary tract -- first time string was taped to my leg, the second time stent was left inside. You will return to the doctor's office in less than a week and the nurse will remove the stent by pulling it out. Slight pressure but there is very little pain. After the stent is removed, you should start returning to normal pretty quick.
