Anybody worried about Coach Morris going to the NFL

Aug 16, 2013, 8:22 AM

I'm watching the Eagles vs Panthers last night and it looked like the Eagles were running more of the Clemson offense than the Oregon offensive (basically a more pass happy spread). Really the only difference was that we take more shots down the field. Well, if Chip Kelly and the Eagles are successful playing this style this year, I'd think that some other GMs would consider it next year and try to bring in a coordinator that could implement it. Morris would be ideal even without experience on the NFL level. I'm sure that job would come up with a bump up in salary as well. If offered do you think he'd take it? He seems like the type that possibly would unless something like the A&M or Clemson job opened up.

I was thinking about that last night

Aug 16, 2013, 8:27 AM

Not Morris specifically, but college coaches jumping to the NFL if Kelly is successful this year. Anyway, we all know Morris sooner or later will move on. When he does we'll go out and get the next great OC.

Kelly and Vick should have gotten together 10 years ago when Michael was young. He isnt the run threat any more and is more of a sitting duck passing. I dont expect the eagles to do much until the find a long term qb solution

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Vick is definitely still a run threat

Aug 16, 2013, 8:35 AM

Their line last year was garbage and when he wasn't injured, he was running for his life.

What Vick has never done well is protect himself and avoid big hits. There's no way he lasts 16 games running that offense.

Not Coach Morris...

Aug 16, 2013, 8:32 AM

but Ashley is worried about Dabo leaving for the NFL. Yes, srsly.

The question is: would YOU leave for the NFL...the Cowboys,

Aug 16, 2013, 8:36 AM

if they asked you to be in charge of the Cheerleaders? lol

Let me think about that for a while and get back to you...

It's going to happen one day regardless,

Aug 16, 2013, 8:33 AM

so no point in worrying about it. Just enjoy the moment. If he leaves then I have faith Dabo will find us a great OC. Dabo has done an excellent job of filling his assistant coach positions. Plus, Clemson is a VERY attractive place right now for any successful OC candidate. I suppose Jeff Scott could get the position. There would be a year or so of growing pains, but Jeff is extremely smart and will be successful if given the chance. Don't get me wrong, I'd miss the heck out of Chad, but no point dwelling over it right now.

I'm worried about him going to TAMU or UT.***

Screw Calford.

Mack Brown is in a dangerous position from here out.

Aug 16, 2013, 8:44 AM

He's getting old and losing is getting old to the huge mass of UT fans. They have 100 bizzilion dollars to pay a coach and are selecting player from a state that rivals the entire south eastern conference's audience area. The Chad know the area well because it's home.

The only thing that could stop them is The Chad. I hope he's a man of his word.

Agree, this worries me more than the TAMU angle. I think if Mack Brown doesn't produce this year, he's gone.

Mac Brown is getting older. (regardless)

I think Morris will be a strong candidate for the next head coach at The University of Texas.

Over 60 is old.

I know I'm 61. :)

Re: Over 60 is old.

Aug 16, 2013, 9:14 AM

I wouldn't say 60 is old. (in the grand scheme of things) However, to lead a large group of 20 +/- year old boys/men, and fulfill all of the other demands from fans, media, etc... (it's even worse in Austin - I know, lived there) If Texas doesn't win the national championship and/or beat OU, Texas fans aren't happy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But do you think Texas would hire someone with no prior

Aug 16, 2013, 9:00 AM [ in reply to Mack Brown is in a dangerous position from here out. ]

head coaching experience at any level of college football? Maybe they would, but I'm not convinced yet. Maybe if Chad had 3-4 years as head coach at a smaller school like Rice or Baylor...

Good question.

I don't know, it's pretty risky.

not sure an a&m grad would take the ut job !

Probably not. (I didn't know Morris graduated from A&M)

Perhaps the A & M job then.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UT has about a bazillion dollars to offer a new HC. I think

Aug 16, 2013, 9:18 AM

anyone in their right mind would jump at the opportunity if it presented itself.

Re: Anybody worried about Coach Morris going to the NFL

Aug 16, 2013, 8:45 AM

First thing Morris' offense isn't a pass happy spread, it's a balanced spread. Morris' passing game is predicated on the run being successful. Second Morris has yet to be a head coach at the college level and I have never heard of someone with only HS football head coach experience getting a HC job in the NFL. Another college program yes, but there is NO way he gets a NFL HC job. He is leaving Clemson the question is when and what university.

I know his contract has a buyout if he leaves to be OC at another school. Does anyone know if there is a buyout to go be an OC in the NFL?

I'm past worrying about it because I think it's.......

Aug 16, 2013, 8:54 AM

inevitable - he's proven himself here and deserves a chance at a promotion somewhere. I'm thinking he'll be gone after this season.

Aug 16, 2013, 8:56 AM

Agreed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Although not always successful....

Aug 16, 2013, 8:59 AM

I try not to worry about things that are beyond my control.

I think Clemson fans universally acknowledge that at some point, probably within the next year or two, Morris will be moving on. It's inevitable.

Re: Anybody worried about Coach Morris going to the NFL

Aug 16, 2013, 9:12 AM

Perhaps he might be offered an OC job but I'm doubting he's qualified to handle a HC position.

Clemson fans shouldn't worry about Chad leaving. He's a great OC but Dabo is the reason he's here.

Re: Anybody worried about Coach Morris going to the NFL

Aug 16, 2013, 10:11 AM

Actually I think he could have already left. There were plenty of jobs out there and I think he would have been interested but read somewhere that his kids are in HS and really want to stay there to graduate. He makes 1.3 million a year (in upstate SC which equates to about 3 million in buying power compared to some other places)so I am not sure he is even looking to leave yet. There are other considerations besides just filling a HC job. It would have to be the right fit, a good team that has potential, somewhere that has recruited the type of players he wants for his team (or the patience for Chad to recruit them over time). Not many winning programs get rid of their coach. I am more worried about what happens to all of these great recruits we are getting if he leaves. Does Watson pull a RK and leave for somewhere else? Ahh, the things we think about when we don't have football games to watch, huh?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He'll leave for a college HC job before he goes to the NFL.

Aug 16, 2013, 10:09 AM

I bet most NFL front offices will take a "wait and see" approach with the Chip Kelly style offense too. If he's successful with it in Philly there's a good chance some other teams will try to copy it so you might see guys like Holgorsen, Sumlin, Morris, etc get looks as either OCs or HCs, but Chad isn't even a college HC and was coaching HS a few years ago, so that would be a pretty big leap.
