Anybody still think Cade should be the starter?

Oct 3, 2022, 8:40 AM

Very proud of how DJ has rebounded this season after the trainwreck that was last year. But as proud as I am of how he's playing this year, as I think about it, I'm more proud of how he played last year. He didn't play nearly as well, and his numbers weren't nearly as good, but the guy did not quit. He fought every game and left his heart out there every game and studied and worked after every game. What a great example of handling adversity - and especially with all the media, from local to national and fan boards, criticizing his every move. This young man is a champion.

My only comment about Cade is, take a look at the video of

Clemson dancing after the win over the Nancies. Cade is in there throwing down with the rest of them, having the time of his life. I think the team is good with where we are now from a QB standpoint.

Dj handled last year about as mature as anybody could handle it.

He was awful, but it wasn't all his fault. Every time he sat down for interviews he took ALL the blame. Very impressed with dj.

I think a lot of what DJ has accomplished so far this season is due to the fact that Cade is there pushing him to be better.

I can honestly say I was wrong about DJ. I wanted him to do great but was not sure he could be. Happy to admit I was wrong.

That being said, we need to have some games coming up where Cade plays a good bit so get him ready if needed. It is definitely DJ's team, but if we want the offense to have success at some point if DJ is out of a game, Cade needs the experience.

Agree 100%. I do still wonder about DJs commitment when he doesn't have someone pushing him. Last year he knew he was the guy and there was a huge drop off to the #2. This year that gap is very narrow, and he is playing with a fire he didn't display last year. I 'll give him the benefit of the doubt that some of that can be attributed to lingering injuries last season and not lackadaisical work ethic. It is something that will be questioned at the NFL combine.

Cade coming in has helped DJ look at and work on areas that he may not have given as much attention to before because now he sees this young QB working on polishing up details in his game too. That's good.
And while it's already helped DJ improve, we still want to see Cade continue to get opportunities to gain experience on the field and keep developing into a reliable #2.

It was never anything personal about DJ. I hate when people try to create something there that doesn’t exist.

Many of us just didn’t think he has what it takes to excel on the field. It appears we were wrong, and that is great! Perhaps that’s why we are not coaches.

Way to go DJ! Great story of sticking with it…for him, his teammates, and the coaching staff.

I feel dumb, but I’m enjoying every moment of it.

Maybe, but if Cade started we'd be missing the opportunity...

Oct 3, 2022, 9:13 AM

to watch DJ go from struggling to complete a pass to becoming what Dabo thinks he can be. DJ has plenty of people behind him and the two quarterbacks waiting to play are among the many who believe he can play someday on Sundays.

Dabo has had DJ on a short rope this season, giving him a little at a time to allow him to conquer some of the issues which tortured him last year. We saw great change in him from last year to now. He may have less to learn about the game than Cade which might make him our best QB between the two.

Can we please stop this?

You don't have to shade Cade's name to big up DJ.

The subject line does not match the message so shade was thrown. I think the shade was directed at fans who expressed legit concerns rather than at Cade. Either way the op should do better

^^^^ This!!

We are 5-0. Have beaten 2 top 10 teams (when we played), yet some want to focus on stirring the pot. Just enjoy the ride and quit trying to divide the Clemson family.

Never did but I do hope he will be able to get some experience down the road so he might be ready if we need him this year.

No. Never did. cade’s time will come. I believe he’ll be ready to go. DJ is doing just fine.

Yes!!! But not until after DJ leaves but I do........

Oct 3, 2022, 10:36 AM

hope that Cade will get some real playing time against BC, etc. in case DJ is injured. Am real impressed with how DJ has bounced back this season.

Its definitely best for all parties for DJ to play great and finish out the season as the starter. I'm glad he's stepped up so far so that we don't have to throw Cade into the fire prematurely

Few people wanted to acknowledge that we were bad around him last year, mostly due to injury. When you look at his Freshman year, he played lights out in the BC and ND games because he had a solid core around him. The same thing is happening this year with a much better group to play with. I think last year was a total anomaly and even so, he still went 10-3 as a starter and now sits 15-4 for his career as a starter.

If we and he continue to play well, I will be very curious to see if he comes back or moves on. I kind of believe he would be better to stay and prove himself one more year to really maximize his draft potential but we will have to wait and see how it all plays out.

No, but we need to get CK some experience. The way the plan now appears to have DJ run a lot, CK could easily end up playing if DJ is injured, God forbid. Just something to think about.

Actually just about everyone acknowledged we were bad around him last year. Basically the coaching staff and every offensive position group was lacking and we spent a year blasting all of them. QB always gets the most good or bad attention and DJs play was bad last year. Bad decisions, bad technique and physically way too heavy. Most everyone wanted him to return to form this year but also wanted to see what Cade had to offer and let the best man win.

In most of the college football world a ten win season would not be called a train wreck.

Unless DJ gets hurt...

Cade WILL be great though... just give him time.

We just don't seem to be able to score enough points to get Cade a legitimate chance to prove what he can actually do with the starters. I was critical of DJ last year and I still see things that make me cringe but his improvement is quite literally astounding. Of course DJ can't control the other factors that have caused him to look bad such as WR play, line play and most of all our awful play calling last year and to some degree this year. I think he has shown the ability to play well despite some of these factors, which is what great QBs have to do.
