Anybody else enjoyed ELO back in the day? So many hits...

Jun 23, 2022, 9:43 PM

...on the early FM dial. Jeff Lynne has such a unique voice. Still going strong today. It's downtime so why not?

It’s actually a funny and interesting story behind that song.

Jun 24, 2022, 12:56 AM

Originally it wasn’t Bruce. I forget exactly what he was singing originally, but everyone heard Bruce. After a while Jeff Lynne himself started singing it as Bruce. He thought it was funny and has gone along with it for decades.

There’s a great YouTube channel called the professor of rock. He’s really really killer and knows his music history and actually interviews a lot of singers and bands. He did an episode on this song and talked about the original lyric and how it got misinterpreted and how Jeff Lynne ended up thinking it was funny and started singing it as Bruce.

So talented is Jeff Lynne. Tryout the underrated "FIRE ON HIGH".

Another underrated ELO song ...

Out of the Blue was one of the first LPs I owned. I still have it. I have since bought the CD and converted it to digital for portability.

Of course, Mr. Blue Sky is undeniably one of the best 'feel good' songs! You can't help but sing along with it.

Roger that MOAB!

Jun 23, 2022, 10:56 PM

Great band moab®! Jeff Lynne is certainly an all-time great! They really have had a recent renaissance with great Michelob Ultra Super Bowl commercial ...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rcw6GdCQC8

Some of you may know Jeff Lynne was very close with George Harrison, and was in The Traveling Wilbury's with Harrison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison. Lynne produced and arranged music for Harrison, Petty and others. He also produced Lennon-written Free as a Bird & Real Love which Yoko gave P. McCartney at his request and McCartney/Harrison/Ringo added instruments and vocals. Lynne gave some great performances at "Tribute to George" concert in Royal Albert Hall with Eric Clapton and many other greats ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_gOpk0KhUY

One final nugget, Paul McCartney, in friendly fashion, accused Lynne of stealing a guitar riff from "Day in The Life" for his hit "Mr. Blue Sky". Listen to the opening chords of Mr. Blue Sky and compare them to the chord(s) that open up the "woke up/got out of bed/dragged a comb/across my head" section of Day in The Life. I think McCartney makes a fair point. Anyway, I love good music, and Lynne is a master.

I didn't see the commercial. Thanks for posting that!***

I always loved how Jeff Lynn took

The front of the old beautiful art deco jukeboxes and made it into a spaceship for the ELO logo.

Similar to the way Tom Schultz made guitars into spaceships for Boston.

Absolutely!

Jeff Lynn often wrote produced arranged played and recorded everything by himself. The band was more for touring.

I tend to like the "haunting" ELO toons, like "Can't Get It

My older brother got me listening to ELO ...

Jun 24, 2022, 9:01 AM

It is hard to pick my favorite because I sing along to most all of their songs.

"Concerto for a Rainy Day" (Side 3 of Out of the Blue) cannot be beat with the final song that is one of the best 'feel good' songs of all time, Mr. Blue Sky. That album contained some great ones with Turn to Stone, Sweet Talkin' Woman as other big hits. I mentioned Wild West Hero above, but another fun song on the album is, Jungle ...

SO many others that could be listed here in addition to the others listed in this thread. I have enjoyed reading this thread!

I think I wore out my ELO 8-Tracks! So many hits!

Fire on High is a kick ### instrumental. Was used by CBS sports as their intro song for a number of years...really cool. Can't remember what years though. Late '70s for sure.
