Any techie guys on here familiar with home Wifi and Google?

Apr 15, 2021, 3:48 PM

I have an AT&T router/modem and have a Google Wifi hub plugged in to that via ethernet. My 16yo son is supposed to be grounded from technology, so I have his laptop Paused in the Google Wifi app and Blocked in my AT&T control panel. Yet, he's still online. Neither the Google or the AT&T apps show any connection or data, though. His phone has been taken away, so there's no possibility of using that as a hotspot. The only other things he has connected to the home network are his Galaxy Watch, a Google Hub, and his Windows desktop is connected via ethernet to the Google Wifi. I'm 100% certain he's not connecting his laptop via ethernet, so how else could he be connecting?

I have FamiSafe parental control software on his laptop (just put it on this week). It shows that he was on this web site - clients3.google.com/generate_204 - last night after he was supposed to be in bed and supposed to be off of his electronics. Could this site be used to circumvent things? Any help or insight is appreciated.

Thank you!

Could be old cached info and he really is blocked.

Options: change your wifi password, unplug the whole system.

There's something in these hills.

No, I looked in to that, but good thought. I've changed the password & rebooted as well. I think it's something related to that link I posted in the OP.

Are you sure he’s connecting to your network? Perhaps one of your neighbors has an open WiFi network. Also are you sure that the AT&T device is only a modem and not a modem/router combo that is broadcasting a WiFi signal?

Another thought: many newer routers broadcast on both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz networks maybe you haven’t blocked him on both.

^^ This reference to an AT&T router/modem combo seems like the most likely. Since you have google mesh wi-fi, you don't need the modem/router combo - only the modem. If so, the router will probably be broadcasting a 2GHz and a 5GHz signal. Check for wi-fi networks on your smart phone and see if you can identify the AT&T router network.

If you find that to be the problem you should be able to take it an AT&T store and exchange it for one that is only a modem - and maybe save a monthly charge for AT&T wi-fi.

This is actually one of the more interesting threads I’ve seen on TNet in a while

I’m rooting for you Pops!

Another possibility could be that your son turns on the Hotspot on his cellphone and connects that way. He would be connecting through cellular data instead of through your home wifi.

Perhaps your router needs a firmware update? Check rouder manufacturer/ versions and/or login to the router website and look for possible firmware update.

All my kids are grown and my only grandson is 19 now. Thank God! Thank you all for the laughs this afternoon. O2b, I feel for you but it still is funny. If only I could have had this much savvy on my dad coming up. Thanks again....and the best of luck to you!

When my youngest was around 16 my wife grounded him from wi-fi and he did not seem to mind, no complaining etc. About a week later we figured out that he had hacked into our neighbors wi-fi. Now has a good job in IT so it all worked out in the end.

Teenagers know more about how to get around these things than we know about blocking them from do it.

did you check his browser history to double check? I know it can be cleared but it's worth looking. It will have timestamps.

Also if you open the laptop it will likely be connected to the last network he used. That is likely your answer.

Also worth testing to see if an incognito tab is still tracked by the parental controls software.

Why don't you just take the computer away???

Most people do not like direct links to unknown sites, so perform a Google search for “what is clients3.google.com/generate_204“.

One of them says it is....

Gstatic Generate_204 captive portal is an Network Portal Detection service bundled with Google related services and with hardware devices like Android smartphone, Android tablet, Android TV, Google TV, Google Chrome, Google Chrome background services, Chromebook, Chrome OS Shill and other Chromium services. ......

My elementary school principal had a way of discouraging squirt guns at school - stomped them flat! Maybe the way to go with Junior's devices. Good luck.
