Any Frank Lloyd Wright fanbois in here?

Sep 22, 2021, 8:11 AM

Only been able to tour 3 of his houses over the years but I think when I'm a bored empty nester it might be a fun thing to see as many as I can. I still remember when I was young the one house he designed in Greenville was on the market for $200k or so, looked at it with my parents but they thought it was "too much per sq ft". sigh.

Anyways, I stumbled on this FLW house in Michigan that's been really well preserved and just reminded me of how much I dig his work.

Yes. Have only been to the Marin County Civic Center.

Frankly (ha!), it was disappointing up close. And I lived in MPLS so was around Wright-inspired prairie architecture and some of the copies are better (functionally) than the OGs.

Anyhow, APM is a big fan boy and totally respect Wright as an auteur. I appreciate any artist who sticks to their principles as much as he did.

Would love to visit the Taliesins. Will visit Falling Water some day.

I been to Auldbrass a couple times, that's about it

Sep 22, 2021, 8:25 AM

since it's right near where I grew up. They give tours one weekend a year there.

Pretty cool but weird as heck. No right angles at all in that house. They have some really cool animals there, like zebras, miniature hippopotamus, etc. Some lady ran over a hippo that escaped a few years ago. In frickin Yemassee, SC.

It’s weird. Their values are more than comparable homes

Sep 22, 2021, 9:48 AM

But far less than pieces of art by the masters.

It would add 6 figures in value to me to know the leaking roofs had been addressed.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And that's the concern.

Sep 22, 2021, 9:54 AM

Marin county Civic Center just did not look good up close. It has not aged well. Some of that could be it being in the care of the government, but up close it just looked like wear and tear has not been kind to it.

The Johnson Wax Building has almost always had problems. The residences are notoriously hard to live in due to leaks, HVAC issues, etc.

Still, what a visionary and artist.

Mad props.

Still, what a visionary and artist.

Yep. I felt like I was walking though a handcrafted piece of artwork at his studio. They don't make them like that anymore, that's for sure. Not did the ever did, except in those cases, of course.

eh....check out Lake Flato out of Texas

Sep 22, 2021, 10:31 AM

or Tom Kundig / Olson Kundig out of the PNW....

Like'em or not, they're kinda leading the way for american residential lately...

I actually got my hands on a set of Lake Flato drawings on an active project....what junk lol. I expected some jaw dropping drawings/details, but nope....my #### looks better

I've been to the Taliesin in Wisconsin and the one in AZ. Surprisingly small. Not the houses, but the scale. I guess he was a smaller dude. But craftsmanship was over the top. The detailing everywhere is unbelievable. But stylistically this is more my prefercence.

Sep 22, 2021, 3:24 PM

Wider halls, taller ceilings, and more slope to the roof would have helped some of works.

Everything was handcrafted, though... That's my main appeal.

Casually a fan. Ken Burns did a documentary on him. Highly

recommend it.

Steelcase has a house of his in Grand Rapids that they take their clients to -nice house - they have fully restored the house and the furniture and everything FLW designed - he would do the whole thing not just the structure, but everything in the house. LOL.
