Any Frank Lloyd Wright fanbois in here?
Sep 22, 2021, 8:11 AM

Only been able to tour 3 of his houses over the years but I think when I'm a bored empty nester it might be a fun thing to see as many as I can. I still remember when I was young the one house he designed in Greenville was on the market for $200k or so, looked at it with my parents but they thought it was "too much per sq ft". sigh.
Anyways, I stumbled on this FLW house in Michigan that's been really well preserved and just reminded me of how much I dig his work.

Frankly (ha!), it was disappointing up close. And I lived in MPLS so was around Wright-inspired prairie architecture and some of the copies are better (functionally) than the OGs.
Anyhow, APM is a big fan boy and totally respect Wright as an auteur. I appreciate any artist who sticks to their principles as much as he did.
Would love to visit the Taliesins. Will visit Falling Water some day.

since it's right near where I grew up. They give tours one weekend a year there.
Pretty cool but weird as heck. No right angles at all in that house. They have some really cool animals there, like zebras, miniature hippopotamus, etc. Some lady ran over a hippo that escaped a few years ago. In frickin Yemassee, SC.

But far less than pieces of art by the masters.
It would add 6 figures in value to me to know the leaking roofs had been addressed.

Marin county Civic Center just did not look good up close. It has not aged well. Some of that could be it being in the care of the government, but up close it just looked like wear and tear has not been kind to it.
The Johnson Wax Building has almost always had problems. The residences are notoriously hard to live in due to leaks, HVAC issues, etc.
Still, what a visionary and artist.
Mad props.

Yep. I felt like I was walking though a handcrafted piece of artwork at his studio. They don't make them like that anymore, that's for sure. Not did the ever did, except in those cases, of course.

I've been to the Taliesin in Wisconsin and the one in AZ. Surprisingly small. Not the houses, but the scale. I guess he was a smaller dude. But craftsmanship was over the top. The detailing everywhere is unbelievable. But stylistically this is more my prefercence.

Yeah he took custom to mean custom. Built in furniture everywhere. Definitely HIS house.
I like the Glass House, but in white better than black. Still, slick concept.

Wider halls, taller ceilings, and more slope to the roof would have helped some of works.
Everything was handcrafted, though... That's my main appeal.
