Although extremely talented, Ali refused to fight for his country. The rest are national heroes in the boxing world.

I understand your point. In the day when I was in the Army and Clay was not, I perceived it differently from you. He stood and went his own way. I support that. I don't support guys who did not stand but ran to Canada or got a ride to Oxford.

Ali was a total hero. Refused to go kill other "colored" people just because he was told to by the white man. He stood up for his principals.

You should be aware of why he chose to not fight

for this country in a war he disagreed with... or maybe you are aware, but still believe that he owed something to a country that displayed time and again that it would refuse to give him the respect and dignity of being a human being...
He did fight for this country once, he won the gold medal in the Olympics, but didn't receive a hero's welcome; what he did receive was a pointed finger in his face and a wave to go order his food at the "colored" window at the back of the restaurant outside...
Unless those facts and many others escape you, your judgement of Ali is very revealing of you and is just as negative as your judgement of Ali...

My favorites are Holyfield, Foreman, Jones, Ward, and the Klitschkos. At Clemson in my day was a kid from Spartanburg who had been in a couple pro fights -> John Wall. He needed sparing partners (targets) so I was one. He practiced in the store rooms in the old tin can building. He took it easy on me and mostly practiced his defense as I tried to knock his head off. I went around looking like I had been in a car wreck, but learned a lot. In my RedNeck Bar have a light and heavy bag - but they are just for show.

Favorites were: Frazier, Froeman, Ali, Hagler and Duran. My daddy (WWII vet) loved Joe Louis.
All that said: Mike Tyson was the most devastating puncher I've ever seen, except for Drago.

Sum are saying Naoya Inoue is the best boxer in the world right now. He is a bantam weight though.

I don't Pay Per View either, but I would like to watch a free fight of his or a repeat. I haven't seen him other than Sports Center highlights.

Younger peeps have no concept of what a HUGE event the 1st Ali-Frazier fight was, and what epic wars 1st and 3rd fights were. Boxing was king.

I was a huge fan of Floyd Patterson. He was small for a Heavy but had heart. In '65 his fight with Clay was on radio at Clemson - broke my heart. He is now a legend, won an Olympic Gold Medal.

Evander Holyfield was incredible as to heart. His best bet against bigger guys was defense, but that was never his game. He attacked all. He was small for a heavy and did great things. Like many who stay on after prime for the $$, most fans don't remember who he was in Prime. That guy comes to fight.
