When he went to the Falcons, we went to the Clemson Ga Tech game on the Saturday night and then the Falcons game on Sunday for the sole reason to see Woody Dantzler. We were decked out in all orange and cheered every time Woody was put in the game, just kickoffs. It was obvious to that whole section that we were there to see Woody, not the Falcons. Well, around the middle of the 3rd quarter our toddler said he needed to go to the bathroom. My wife said, “it’s your turn to take him!” While I was in the bathroom, they put Woody in at QB on a goal line offense and he score a touchdown! Somebody, turned to my wife and joked, you’re gonna be in trouble! I come back to the seats herding our little one and everybody’s looking at me chuckling. I said, “what’s going on?” And my wife told me. To this day I haven’t seen video of Woody’s only TD as NFL QB (I know he scores on kick return).
That’s a great story. Reminds me of a trip I took with some friends to old Turner Field to see the Braves. Of course I had my glove with me in hope of catching a foul ball. After a while I had to take a break to get rid of some beer I had “rented” so I handed the glove to my friend. When I got back he had a big grin on his face as he showed me ball he had caught. He even had the nerve to tell me the ball would have landed in my lap if I had been sitting there! And he kept the ball! Oh well.
My dream sports weekend was the fall semester of my freshman year in 1995 living on Johnston F-Annex. Me and about 8 other guys from my hall went down to Ga Tech for a Sat game that we won. That night, the Braves were playing the Indians game six in the World Series up 3 games to 2. We didn't have tickets, but went to Fulton County to party at the game then planned on going to Buckhead to burn it down. We were tailgating in the parking lot and noticed in the fifth inning one of the gates was about 15 yards wide and there was only one older gentleman standing there. We were feeling good and decided to make a run for it thinking he couldn't get all of us. Well, that older gentleman tried to stop us, but it didn't work and he gave up and we all got in. We saw David Justice hit the game winning home run in the bottom of the 6th and they won the game and the Series. That night was one I will never forget and Buckhead was awesome too... I may or may not have gotten lucky that night.
The next day we went to see the Falcons play the Cowboys and it was Deion Sanders first game as a Cowboy against his old team.
I enjoyed being at the game in Tampa when Clemson won its third Natty, but I still say that weekend in Atlanta was my best sports weekend ever. Go Tigers !!!
