Did Dabo do enough?

Firing Streeter was a gutzy move by Dabo none of us saw coming. Hiring Riley was even better. But was it enough? Personal I've been going back and rewatching some games. The O line was atrocious. The receiver play was terrible. Can Garrett fix both problems while retaining Grishem and Austin? I'm worried.

I do believe that all the coaches know their own groups had better be ready.

Yeah, there has been a shot across the bow saying are you going to be next. Do the job you were hired to do.

Do the job and do it in an exceptional way , or get the locker cleared out 😉.

If best is the standard , then 2023 had better see some upticking in several offensive categories.

Firing coaches is not a cure-all. Some people have to much magical thinking.

Indeed. They need to have 13 or 15 years to show that they are not going to get over the hump. Firing them after only 1 or 2 bad years is crazy!

We are going to need a couple more recruiting cycles to fill some gaps. It all starts with talent and we missed some on the OL and at WR. We have some talent to work with and I think GR will have input into key decisions that need to be made down the road.

Dabo set the tone and lit the fire so everyone knows where they stand and what they have to do this year.

And what about the defense also? 38 to Wake in regulation

Feb 18, 2023, 4:46 PM

35 to Notre Dame, 31 to South Carolina at home, 31 to Tennessee. Couldn't hold any team with a pulse to less than 30. And we had very talented personnel.

To be fair, the ND game the special teams gave up a score and the offense gave up a score. but i hear ya!

We were 28th in total defense. 13th in rush defense, but 76th in pass defense.

Our issue was the secondary. That's why uSC and UT scored. UT had one good drive and 3 long pass TDs.

We absolutely MUST improve in the secondary, and the defense will be top 10.

Perspective. Please try.

Secondary was a big issue this season and I feel with our front four that they may have thought pressure would offer them some help but that did not materialize that often and our inexperience was exposed.

SC game should have never went the way it did. Had a guy complete 8 passes for less than 100 yards and to top that off we were having very good luck on the ground. That game and the way it unfolded pisses me off.

You tend to forget all the 3 and outs and turnovers that kept the defense on the field way more than they should have been. Also when you have 5 to 10 play drives you wear the other team down. The defense will be fine as long as the offense does their job.

Lot of that goes back to our offensive woes and the inability for them to give the D a breather . We got torched a lot down the field too that is on Reid and his group to vastly improve. Some young CBs need to grow up fast. Really like the talent there though.

This team has many issues. Streeter was just one of them. I'm not sure Gresham should have been replaced before Streeter. Was not a fan of streeter but I do think he was handcuffed with DJ as a quarterback

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like what?

1

Feb 18, 2023, 5:10 PM

We were a QB away from the 7th top 4 finishes in 8 years. You do understand that, correct?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They were quite a bit more than a QB away.

1

Feb 18, 2023, 6:36 PM

C'mon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Starting with UGA last year, we win with a good QB last year.

1

Feb 18, 2023, 7:32 PM

Very possible we beat NCSU and Pitt last year as well, with a better QB. We had everything needed to make the playoffs but a good QB.

This year was even more pronounced. I don't know if we win at ND even with Trevor, simply because they ran the ball at will, but there's no doubt whatsoever we beat the snot out of the coots with basicslly anything better than a 27.6% completion %.

That's 8 straight years of playoffs... if we had a good QB. We already have a record for 6 straight.

Yes, most all of the "issue" was the handcuffed situation at QB. It's really very simple to see when you go game by game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Like what?

1

Feb 20, 2023, 1:12 PM [ in reply to Like what? ]

FACTS. There was a literal pumpkin at QB but it's everyone else's fault and "fire everyone!" CFB discourse is the worst, and now that DJ is gone, they're on to the next target to be angry about.

Tigers were a QB away the past 2 years.

Proof 2021: UGA 10 Clemson 3.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And BTW, "Gresham" was handcuffed by the same thing the entire team was.

Feb 18, 2023, 5:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Did Dabo do enough? ]

In 2020, Tyler's first year, he turned Cornell Powell from basically an afterthought to an NFL draft pick, and he nearly doubled Amari's output and greatly elevated his draft stock. 2020 was also the most productive receiving season in Clemson program history.

Then we entered the DJ era.

Let's try to acknowledge the big picture here, okay?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: And BTW, "Gresham" was handcuffed by the same thing the entire team was.

Feb 20, 2023, 9:15 AM

or Powell and Rogers were the only options and they had a #1 pick slinging the ball to them

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. We'll be lucky if we're ever a fumbled punt and an FG from the playoffs.

Feb 18, 2023, 5:07 PM

I mean, we're only 5th in P5 wins the last two "slide" seasons. That's horrible. I'd rather have Tommy West.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No. We'll be lucky if we're ever a fumbled punt and an FG from the playoffs.

Feb 18, 2023, 5:28 PM

Big picture. Yes, we almost made a playoffs last year but let's be honest anyone unless you're blind knows we should not have made the playoffs last year. We have coaches that don't deserve to be on the staff. They've done nothing to prove themselves. Conn, Hall, Spiller, Austin, Goodwin, Gresham. Clemson hasn't been the same since 2018. Steadily declining. Hopefully with GR hire it was climb back the mountain.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Steadily declining."

Feb 18, 2023, 7:29 PM

Nailed it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No sir, I stand by what I said. We're a good QB away

1

Feb 18, 2023, 7:55 PM [ in reply to Re: No. We'll be lucky if we're ever a fumbled punt and an FG from the playoffs. ]

from making the playoffs again. And yes, in 2022, I'm certain we make the playoffs with a good QB. You're thinking about things from a perspective of DJ, and that's what I'm saying needed to be changed.

We were 2nd in the country in 2019. We lost to perhaps the best team in college football history vs. LSU. There's no shame in that whatsoever and it's not a measure of decline.

In 2020 we finished 4th. It just so happens we played the team we beat in the semis the previous year, and they played, what 6 games in 2020 and totally dedicated that season to beating us. OSU was a great team, and they had zero wear and tear and a vendetta. Again, we didn't lose because we were "in decline".

You have to be a really spoiled fan to think #2 and #4 is some sort of problematic decline.

In 2021, we did "decline", and I mentioned why. I'm saying it's very likely we beat the 3 teams we lost to, if we had a good QB. So it wasn't a program decline ... it was one position... the most important one on the field.

We did see a 2022 drop-off in the secondary, but again, a good QB easily puts us in the playoffs.

Conn and Hall have two Natty rings. They've more than proven their skills. Spiller's group has been the hardest working of the last two years. No problem there. Austin? The OL was much better this year, and like every other position including defense, the OL would have looked much better with a QB capable of making good decisions, stepping up, and buying time. Pretty sure Deshaun and Trevor GREATLY enhanced the play of the OL before Austin, and he was left trying to make unit be able to block much longer than usual. GRISHAM - I already showed the facts there, and Goodwin, well we don't precisely know, other than to say we were 28th IN SPITE of the 75th ranked secondary. Fix (gain experience) the secondary then let's see how the D looks.

So yeah, sorry bud, I actually disagree with 100% of the things you said there, and I truly believe I used very astute observations to do it.

Relax. We're not "in decline". That's a misnomer based on the poor play of the most important position on the field. To that point, can you name any great team in the CFP era without a great QB? It doesn't happen. The game today revolves around offense and having great/elite play from the QB.

Go Tigers.

I dont think Streeter's firing surprised many.

1

Feb 18, 2023, 6:30 PM

Swinney had to make a move and Streeter was obvs not the answer for the offense. Easy decision and gave Dabo some lebensraum.

But they wont win the ACC. It's FSU's year. And Dabo will once again find himself answering for another underachieving year.

He's no Saban. Sorry. He isnt.

You sound like a real winner. When has anyone said he was Saban? Could Saban do what Dabo has done at Clemson with a lot less 5 stars on his roster? Who will ever know? What could Dabo do at Bama with their stacked roster year in and year out? Who will ever know?

Do not need Dabo to be Saban I’m very happy with the way he is!!

I compared him to Saban because Clemson fans whine so much about not getting the respect Bama gets. One comparison merits the other.
But he's just not on the level of a Saban and
my gut tells e'erone's gonna look back on 44-16 as the peak of his tenure.
Hwever, if he turns the ship around and they land back in the CFP this season, he deserves Coach of the Year and maybe even a Saban-like status. Hard to see it. But. It could happen.

I don’t get the criticism of Thomas Austin. Will Putnam was playing a new position. Walker Parks was playing a new position. A true freshman was starting at RT. Marcus Tate was injured late in the season.

The OL improved from 2021 to 2022. If Tristan Leigh takes the next step, it’s going to be really good next year. His first recruiting class was really good. The criticism is unwarranted.

Are play calls our only weakness? I don’t think so. We are simply not elite on offense. The two reasons for that are:
1) talent
2) coaching

Re: Did Dabo do enough?

Feb 20, 2023, 11:44 AM

What I hope is Riley does the job... so well he is only with us for a few years before a big coaching job comes calling. If he does well... we might only have 2 years.

Then... bring Jeff Scott back and this is where he settles out and is the heir apparent after Dabo retires. I see a lot of what happened to Jeff in what happened to Brad Scott.

Brad Scott was the O line and OC of FSU in the late 80s and early 90s. Got them the Natty with Charlie Ward in 1993 then the coots came calling. Was it too big too early for him? Perhaps....

I remember talking one time to Brad Scott about his time in Columbia. In his first year, he got the coots their first EVER bowl victory. He would talk about having to play UT, UF and Clemson every year in the last three games and he would petition to the SEC every year about breaking that up to no avail.

I feel bad things didn't work out for Jeff at USF... I really thought he would do well there. I think Brad will have a serious talk with Jeff about the opportunity he has at Clemson. Be the OC for 10-15 years until Dabo steps aside to a staff full of his former players. Hopefully, theres a few more Natty's in there and he just stays in Clemson, becomes the AD and lets Jeff take the reins of the empire he built. Kind of like what Tom Osborne did in Nebraska. Maybe Dabo gets into politics in SC.
