This is a respected sports journalist, not a rumor monger. Just sharing in case anyone is interested.

It's rumored that 8 need to leave. If so, it's likely

Clemson
UNC
UVA
FSU
Notre Dame
Miami

+ 2 others.

You'd have to assume all have landing spots (except Notre Dame, which could probably drop the current ACC games and reschedule elsewhere, selling the games to NBC for much more money).

Since Notre Dame is not a part of the ACC in Football and the football media renumeration aspect of media rights is driving the GOR discussion, I don't think ND is considered a part of the GOR discussion. Just MHO. Need someone in the know to answer that aspect before we can count ND's vote in the GOR numbers.

But they have agreed to play 5 ACC teams per year, and they ARE in the GOR for non football sports. I suspect that that vote DOES count.

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

Jul 25, 2022, 7:22 PM

I think it's more about NATIONAL draw than locking in states at this point. Adding states mattered when cable was king. Cable is dying.

Clemson is in a good spot for the current landscape. They are wanted by Fox, and ESPN does not want to lose them. They have 3 possible landing spots, one is absolutely a yes (Big 12), one is probably a yes (SEC), one is a possibly a yes (B1G). All will pay much more than the weak ACC contract.

It got reported, by a real reputable source— not swim swam— that the BIG 10 wants to add Duke, UNC, Syracuse and NC State as well…. Add that and we are way past the 8 needed.

Does this source have any information on the rest of the ACC? Landing spots?

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

What’s the new news here? It was already reported by several groups at ACC media days that schools have sent reps to review the GOR doc - like they were going to see the Declaration of Independence.

I must be missing what he’s saying.

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

“ACC is on the move”

Teams verify the number needed to void GOR

That sounds like more is happening than “looking around”. Swaim seems to think so as well.

Maybe so. I guess we shall see. I just made that assumption before - why else would they be looking at the doc.

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

Jul 25, 2022, 5:08 PM

I have no idea what it would take for the GOR to be abolished. I would assume it would essentially take a complete dissolution of the league, whatever that means.

But, I'll play. The 8 most likely teams to leave (not considering ND) would be, in no particular order: Clemson, FSU, UNC, UVA, Miami, VT, GT and NCSU.

Caveat: If the B1G decided they wanted to go east and pick up BC and Cuse, then I'm wrong.

Note, this is not a prediction. Just listing my "8 most likely to get invited to SEC or B1G."

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

Jul 25, 2022, 5:29 PM

Not a bad list but I have a slightly different and more specific guess

SEC invites - no particular order
Clemson
FSU
Miami
UNC (also maybe B1G)
GT (also maybe B1G for AAU affiliation)

B1G Invites - no particular order
UVA
Pitt
UNC (also maybe SEC)
Duke (for BBall mainly)
GT (also maybe SEC for UGA rivalry)

I just don't see NCSU or VT going to either. They arent big enough in either football or basketball and/or they arent AAU members to qualify for the Big 10. I have a feeling they might be on the outside looking in.

That would give the SEC the clear upper hand in football with B1G behind them and vice versa for Basketball

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

and I think Pitt is also an AAU school

Big 10 doesn't need Pitt. They are in the state already with PSU. Pitt would just be another mouth at the buffet.

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

You gotta wonder if the charter members of the league will try to stick together wherever they go...Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, FSU, and Wake Forest. I know Miami and FSU aren't founding members but those 2 seem the most likely to be in the group. I just don't think UNC is going anywhere without Duke.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alignment tweet FWIW.....

Jul 25, 2022, 6:41 PM

No they won't. Look, everyone LIKES the smaller schools, but they have been a drain on the better football schools for years. We are in a battle for life or death. We can't hand out what we don't have any longer.

If there is an opportunity to get out of the ACC without the millstone of the GOR, we will take it and leave others behind.

I get it. Wake may be expendable and i know it's all about football but Duke does offer elite bball. Every so often you get a decent Duke football season. Is the UNC brand strong/desired enough to piggyback Duke into a super conference? I double down on unc not making a move without Duke.

I’ll take that bet. If UNC is going to swim, you don’t hold on to an anchor.

Re: Neither the BIG nor the SEC wants all that dead weight***

Jul 26, 2022, 4:36 PM [ in reply to Neither the BIG nor the SEC wants all that dead weight*** ]

I agree with this. There aren’t 8 ACC schools that increase the size of the slices of pie so that existing members gain from the additions. Even if both the SEC and B1G go to 20 which isn’t likely anytime soon, Oregon, Washington and Stanford would be in the mix well before NC State, Pitt, VT, BC, Louisville or Cuse.

So, in all of these “how do we get enough members to leave so we can the magic number of 8” scenarios, the Big 12 needs to be in the mix.

My preferred (completely guessing) path to make this work:

SEC
Clemson
FSU
UNC
UVA

B1G
ND (substitute Oregon/Wash should ND stay independent and lock them out of the playoff)
Stanford

Big 12
GT
Louisville
VT
Miami

Duke, Cuse, Pitt and BC go to the Big East. Wake goes to the AAC where I hope they flourish. NCSU left out in the cold. Or these 6 leftover schools stick together and retain the ACC name and add more like ECU, Appy, USF, UConn, etc to form a new-look ACC.

Somehow the ACC ADs were hypnotized and asked to sign a deal with the Monkey Overlord at the time into saying, "We will not leave the ACC conference. But, if we do and go to another conference, we will forfeit all of our media revenue to you, Monkey Overlord, until the GOR is dissolved, or 2036, whichever comes first."

You guys can make fun of the failed Big12 move, but it was inches from happening. Notre Dame and ESPN came up with a plan to increase ACC payouts and to create the ACC Network which stopped it at the last moment. I do not see a white knight this time, unless Notre Dame joins the ACC- HIGHLY UNLIKELY. The only questions presently are- "Is there a landing spot?", and "Can the GOR be broken?".

It could be a majority have indications/promises of new

Jul 25, 2022, 7:06 PM

homes in aggregate (maybe a few to big a few to sec and a few to b12).

Does a simple majority void the agreement and/or have ability to terminate the league itself? The b12 DID SAY OPENLY that they intend to act aggressively in the realignment sweepstakes and they are looking at a new deal north of 60M which would be great for any acc team without a lifeline to sec or b10.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just can't imagine any scenario involving the ACC's

Jul 25, 2022, 7:23 PM

institutions that wouldn't allow for a majority of members to kibosh the whole thing without any penalty. A simple majority might not can force a rule change or inact a new initiatve, but you can be certain that a majority could dissolve the league. It's a drastic step for sure, but most definitely within the power of a simple majority, which for us is 8, and Notre Dame would count because they're tied up in it also with other sports.

We know there's been trips to Greensboro to review the GOR from many programs, from the Commish, which is probably happening on site as that's where programs can get the league's legal interpretation of things face to face.

It could very well be that a football-oriented swath in the ACC is looking to simply retool and restructure together rather than join another league outright. This tweet doesn't say a whole lot that we don't already know.

Clemson is a done deal to the SEC, it’s a matter of when

Jul 25, 2022, 8:14 PM

From what I’ve heard & seen Clemson to the SEC is a done deal, the timing and announcement will be before or after the season, depending on the agreement reached.

Nobody should be surprised by this considering the changing landscape.

I don’t see a path for the ACC to stay together as it is now long term.

If you look at this Swaim guy’s Twitter feed, you’ll see he:

1. Is a Big 12 homer and desperate to paint the Pac 12 in a negative light.
2. Has a “source” for literally every situation that comes up. I’m surprised he doesn’t have a source on the grassy knoll for the JFK assassination because he has so many sources.

Even for PAC without the LA teams, these numbers look low. I wouldn’t be shocked if this guy isn’t just making this up to try to help the Big 12 seem stronger in comparison.
