Dangerous = Clemson's offense finally using a ground game to open up the pass
Jul 8, 2015, 10:16 AM
|
|
DW4 can pick apart just about any D in the country WITHOUT an RB lined up in the backfield, or any pre-snap movement/end arounds.
Last year we had to use his arm and air game to then establish somewhat of a run game.
This year? We can pound it. Or pass it. Starting from play 1. With success.
Scary.
Dye, Choice, Brooks, Gallman, Davidson, Fuller... McCloud, Cain, Peak, Mike, Tay Scott, Hopper, Leggett, Milan.... DW4!
Oh my...

And as we've seen before, none of that will matter if OL sux

That's been our achilles heel every year...Great offensive talent, crap OL.
Remember when we had both CJ Spiller and James Davis? Not too memorable because the OL stunk.
Here's to the OL freshmen maturing, especially Hyatt and to healthy ankles, knees and backs.

Wasn't that the plan last year, too?

I remember everybody talking about how we were going to be more of a "smashmouth spread" last year, and how Morris would've preferred to run more.

Yep. Was most certainly the plan until Dye was re-injured, Choice injury, Brooks out for the year, etc..
And guy pointing to the Spiller lack of a running game, you do realize cullen harper was our starting QB and our best WR at one point was walk-on Terrance Ashe. Yeah, VT played about 17 guys in the box on D the whole game. Balance and great QB play = scary O.
Gone are the excruciating days of Will Proctor and Cullen Harper, where if either of them went down our season would be over.
Kelly Bryant would've been a better option to START in front of those guys as a True Freshman. Israel, too. Welcome, Zerrick Cooper!
This O-Line is going to surprise a lot of people.
1. Hyatt Norton Guillermo Crowder Gore 2. Fruh/Morris McClain Norton/Falc Hearn Fruh
Couple of solid 'Phillip Price' type walk-ons looking good, in addition to Green, Giella, Byers, Smith, and crew busting it up this summer to nap a 2-deep spot themselves.
Jk Jay and DeStefano don't incur career ending injuries and the story of our O-Line these past few years becomes vastly different, btw.
Just enjoy the show this year, my friend.

We will run it better this season but I bet they try to be fast and hit the edges a lot more.

At some point, the middle should be more vulnerable to the running game. 5 on 4 blocking will be a lot easier than 5 on 6. They wont be able to stack the box due to the passing game and the many weapons. Play calling is going to be essential. Run on passing downs, pass on running downs. Is that too simple??

DW gets rid of the ball more quickly than some of our previous QB's and his ability to move around in the pocket makes the job for the OL somewhat easier. Count on Dabo and company having a game plan that fits our talent . . . or lack of! Stay healthy. That's the main thing.

Agreed on the staying healthy part. I can see less risk-taking by the coaches on play calling, and just let his talent take over. Then again, thinking about it, DW has run this type of offense now for five years. His finger was a fluke injury, He was hit pretty hard a few times by the coots and bounced right up. This stigma of him being injury-prone needs to go away.

The great thing about Scott and Williams is their ability for separation from the DBs in man to man, and to find the open seam in zone defenses. When this happens, DW was able to find them and often. Throw in a more experienced Hopper, talents like Thompson, Cain and McCloud, and DW's ability to get rid of the ball quickly, opposing defenses will have to spread themselves out to try and cover everyone. OC's dream offense. Can we get a first down on 3rd and 1 or 2 by smashing up the middle??? Who knows, but I think we may not go the conventional route on short yardage plays. We will find out.

You left out Peake. Perhaps the most "dangerous" of all. Go Tigers!

My bad, I did. We have yet to really see Peake reach his potential. Same with Leggett, and now that Richard is playing, will that motivate him?

I hope so, Leggett has been inconsistent. If Peake stays healthy, a true game-changer.

In all honesty, this team is SO loaded with game changers, Peake is just one more.

Spiller, Davis, Ford, Kelly, etc...but our oline sucked.
All the speed and skill in the world doesn't mean a thing if we can't block.

Totally right. And if it weren't for the brilliance of Cullen Harper and Rob Spence we may not have won a game that year. We got lucky with those 2 at the helm.

Real hero? Vic Koenning.
Jul 8, 2015, 5:44 PM

You know.. the guy who wasn't good enough for Illinois and who Deshaun set a record for most TDs thrown in a first ever collegiate start against.
With him, Spence and Harper... I don't care how bad our O-Line was. We should've taken the crystal ball home

This year is the exact opposite.
Jul 8, 2015, 8:43 PM

Best/only receiving option was Aaron Kelly. Then Grisham. Then a young Ford.
With a QB who could seldom get any of them the ball on down field throws.
