An in-depth look at our 2021 hoops recruiting class

Feb 19, 2021, 9:58 AM

Our 2021 basketball recruiting class included 3 signees, all 3 stars by most services. It is currently ranked #42 overall by 247Sports, which ranks 8th in the ACC.

Lucas Taylor, 6’6” 185 SG who is a scorer with nice size for a 2 guard. He shoots the three well and can guard three positions on defense. He was ranked the #7 player in North Carolina. He chose us over 34 other offers, including Ohio State, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, Wake Forest, Connecticut, Xavier, Marquette, Ole Miss, Cincinnati, Providence, Virginia Commonwealth, and others.

Joshua Beadle, 6’4” 170 PG has nice size for a point guard. He had 19 offers, and chose Clemson over Wake Forest, Virginia Commonwealth, Saint Louis, and others. He flew under the radar a bit, although one recruiting service did have him as a 4 star. He was ranked #118 nationally. He is a very good athlete who can take it to the basket, shoot the 3, and even hit the mid-range shot.

Ian Schieffelin, 6’8” 225 PF is perhaps the most raw prospect in this class, but is still considered a top 150 recruit. He had about a dozen offers including Virginia Tech, Dayton, Richmond, and others.

I am excited to see what these three players can do! They are all fine young men who are good students and come from great families. Thankful that they chose Clemson!

I share your excitement although i would take the number of offers with a grain of salt. Many schools blanket recruits with offers to gage interest but some would not be committable.

Seems this class addresses needs plus there is less reach in this class than we have seen early in CBB's tenure which was in large part due to abysmal facilities.

We will all be pulling for these guys to be a success at Clemson. Every year I hope for a big city, playground guy but we rarely attract that kind of talent. Dawes is the closest we have come in recent years.

Do you think that we will also be adding some transfers next year; will need some help in the paint in both scoring and rebounding since Simms and Trapp will be gone. Coach BB also needs to recruit some NBA potential players (at least like KJ), guys who are athletic. I think that is where he lacks compared to most of the previous basketball coaches at Clemson.

We have a bunch of good players right now but I don't believe anyone will make it to the NBA - but I hope I am wrong.

Yes, if all three seniors all don’t come back we still one spot available. Would think we would go after a transfer scoring wing or Stretch 4 type who can play inside some. PJ Hall will move into more of the Center spot next season. Also Lynn Kidd will get a lot more minutes. We will be bigger next year just with those two getting more minutes.

PJ plays the same postion as Simms

Feb 19, 2021, 4:53 PM

He will not be a "center" next year, if anything he will move more into a stretch 3, certainly not a center. He attacks the basket too well to play with his back to it, he has a great ability to locate the ball and finish at the rim, moving to center would waste his talents and skill sets.

Honestly the 2021 class is a little disappointing based on the momentum we had from 2020 class and the good start to this season.

I think all 3 are good players so don’t get me wrong. Just I would have loved to get some 4 star top 80 type talent to pair with what we just brought in. I’ll openly admit I’m not a huge basketball recruiting guy but I am football and stars matter. Hopefully next class we get back to some of the more 4 star guys and throw our name in for some of the home grown talent coming up.

I think COVID took a lot of the steam out of taking advantage of the momentum they had the last two class’s because we couldn’t get top 75-50 players to visit under the circumstances. I do think this group fills needs and can be good role players there first couple of seasons. Hopefully this summer most of COVID will be taken care of and we can resume getting highly regarded HS visitors again. The 2022 class in both Carolinas is very highly regarded.

All three are having very good seasons.

Taylor is having an outstanding season. He can really shoot the ball which this team needs. Here are his stats

Here is highlight game:

Beadle might be the best of the three right now. Can play both guard spot s very well and can immediately get a lot of Trapp’s minutes. Check this out:

Schieffelin might be the most underrated and plays the best competition on the best team. Has a high motor and multitalented. Recently had a 20-20 game:

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

If he can do all that in a mask just wait for him to be able to breathe while he is playing basketball lol!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe all three are better than their star level indicates.

One impact COVID has had on recruiting is that the recruiting services have not been able to scout players like they typically do. Thus, their evaluations this year are probably as inaccurate as ever - especially as it relates to players who are late bloomers and have improved a ton over the past year.
