Am I the worst neighbor ever? What would you have done?

Nov 9, 2017, 1:52 PM

Last Saturday, my wife and I were in Clemson, watching our son in a swim meet. Sadly, the swim meet and game overlapped, so we knew we were not going to be able to see much of the game...live, at least.

About 10 minutes before gametime, my wife got a text from our next door neighbors, who are Wolfpack fans. They said their cable had gone out, and asked if it would be ok for them to watch the game at our house (they have a key). These are good people who I really like, and would generally do anything for, but this was a unique scenario. Any other Saturday of the year, I would have said "Yes, of course!"

I said absolutely not. There was no way that I was going to let them watch MY tv in MY house and pull against MY team, when I was not even going to get to watch the game myself. I told her to tell them that we had the same cable provider (true), so that ours was probably out, too.

I feel bad about it. Should I?

You're fine. No way in h3ll would I allow people in my house

Agreed. And if you had let them in, you may have not had any towels left when you got home.

He trusts them enough to give them a key to his house.

I won't tell you to feel bad.

But I will say, it reminds me of the folks who (without sarcasm) say they would never marry a rival team's fan.

If you place your sports team affiliation above general human kindness and decision making of your association, with no provocation to warrant it, perhaps your priorities could use some self-evaluation.

Or at least don't give them a key to your house.

Then who would bring in my mail and feed my dog

Nov 9, 2017, 2:11 PM

when I am out of town? I can't take the key away.

But let's be honest about a few things. There are about 20 other homes on our street, and only two with a rooting interest in the Tigers. There are probably 50 bars and restaurants within a 10 mile radius who will all have the game on. And there are Wal-Marts and Targets with appliance departments full of TVs.

I already said I would do anything else for them but that. And if it had been a UNC game, I would have said yes on Saturday. Heck, I might have even come home from Clemson to watch it with them.

But I have a key to their house, too, and I would NEVER ask them to let me go watch this particular game (or probably any game) in their house. They know me well enough to know how deep my orange blood runs.

And yes, my wife is a Clemson grad, as well as both siblings and her dad (and both grandfathers).

Nov 9, 2017, 3:45 PM

Perhaps they thought since you trust them to check your mail and take care of your dog and have a key to the place where all of your personal effects are located...

That maybe they could ask you nicely to watch your TV for a few hours since you weren't using it and they were having trouble with theirs.

Perhaps they didn't even think that what team you root for would affect your decision in the matter, given the trust you've shown otherwise.

It's almost like they think you're their friend or some nonsense like that...

You need an electronic keypad

Nov 9, 2017, 3:59 PM [ in reply to Then who would bring in my mail and feed my dog ]

That way you can give your neighbor a key code to get in and then delete the code after they leave. Most robberies are done by your friends and neighbors. And these people also have your dog's trust too.

Not trying to be untrusting, just very cautious.

Change the locks - get rid of the dog or plan to board them. I can't believe you would allow anyone other than your immediate family in your house when you are not there. And honestly, most of my relatives would NOT be allowed, and never receive my key. Geez.

Just put a red flag in your yard telling the thieves you're out of town and leave the doors unlocked. You can thank me later. You don't need that stuff anyway.

Nope, I think the worst neighbor is the one who wanted to go into your house and watch your tv.

I think you'd be able to tell if a Wolfpack watched THAT game in your house. I believe that you would be the one headed to the home improvement (repair) store.

Re: Am I the worst neighbor ever? What would you have done?

Nov 9, 2017, 2:18 PM

So if I read that right you said if NCSU had been playing say UVA you would have let him watch from your house. Thus the only reason you said no was because it was Clemson vs NCSU.

If that was indeed the situation, seems to me if you trusted him to watch any other game the Clemson game should be no different. Saying no is being petty.

If those are good friends you should have let them watch.
Sounds kind of childish if you ask me.
You are very lucky to have good people as neighbors that you trust .

I don’t talk trash, I don’t get in people's faces, but I take it VERY seriously, and anyone who knows me at all knows and understands that. And if they can’t handle that, then it’s on them. I don’t hide it.

I wasn’t ugly about it, but I am who I am, and I am not sorry for it.

That's a tough call. I would agree with you 100% about not allowing anyone in your house w/o you or your wife being there. However, you trusted them with a key - apparently to allow them to go in for other reasons if you are not there. My relatives have a key to my house - to tend to the alarm if it should go off, etc.

(B) there are sports bars for that.

Re: Am I the worst neighbor ever? What would you have done?

Nov 9, 2017, 4:06 PM

What is wrong with you people?

Weird for someone to make a simple request like:

"Hey, I'm pumped about the game, as I know you are. My TV is broke. The timing sucks, but since I know you're as passionate as we are about our team and this game, would it be cool if I watched the game on your TV?"

They exchanged keys to their homes. You don't just do that and then be like...no, I'm sorry. We're cool any other day of the year, but today when you're in a bind...you can bite me because you're a fan of the team my team is playing.

REALLY?

Seems to me your neighbors...

Nov 9, 2017, 7:14 PM

...put you in a tough position that they shouldn't have. They could have sucked it up and drove to the nearest sports bar or restaurant to watch the game. If I were in their situation, my first thought would have definitely not been "hey I got the neighbor's key, they are out of town, let's see if they care if we go spend 4 hours hanging in their home watching a football game." Would have never even crossed my mind to ask that of a neighbor, no matter if we trusted each other with house keys for emergencies, vacations, etc. Unless you guys are super-close, always hanging at each others homes, dinner parties, etc, I can certainly understand your response.

Now, with all that said, if you guys are indeed super-close, and the only issue is they are Wolfie fans, then I think you should have let them in. Assuming they would have done the same for you in a pinch as close friends.
