Am I the only one who thinks

Aug 17, 2022, 10:22 AM

We run the table if we had Chase Brice at QB1 last year? At least regular season. injuries at WR would have taken a toll by the end. Just a thought as I await the GT game.

but no. Anybody who blames our failures and shortcomings last year so heavily on DJ/QB is overlooking a lot of problems out team had, including an unprecedented rash of injuries, and inconsistent play in many areas. There's no denying that QB play was a big part of it, but it was a lot deeper than that.

Brice probably would have won the NC State game and maybe even the Pitt game, and he would have kept games against really bad teams like GT from being as close, but overall he would not have been enough to keep us at the level we had been at previously. And no, I don't think he would have beaten the dawgs. Having him may have made the final score 6-3 instead of 10-3, but our OL was hopeless against them in game 1.

Aug 17, 2022, 1:15 PM

I usually don't usually comment. But I just watched the first half of the Pitt game again last night. End of first half DJ was 9 of 19. Of the 10 incompletions, 2 were clearly off target. 2 more were catchable, not optimal - including the interception in the red zone to Ross. All the rest were drops. Including what would have been a sure touchdown to Shipley. Shipley, Galloway, Ajou, Collins all had easy drops.

At that point DJ is probably pressing.

I like Chase and maybe we would have won. But I think there's a better chance if you give DJ the receivers Chase had against Syracuse(heck just Tee & a 100% Ross) and it's win.

Agree with your statement but would add coaching. Our staff waited until well into the season to make adjustments to the offensive game plan where we moved to a run heavy attack. Surely they could see in fall camp that the passing game was suspect so had they adjusted earlier we may have won more games. It might have also taken some of the pressure off DJ which would have helped his confidence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. It was a perfect storm of subpar player development, injuries, and schematic mistakes.

Aug 17, 2022, 11:17 AM

The first half of the season was horrible. To everyone’s credit, the second half of the season was outstanding given these challenges. Very proud of the way we rallied.

Aug 17, 2022, 11:50 AM [ in reply to Re: I loved Chase Brice ... ]

Did the staff wait, or was the later success in the running game a combination of development of our young running backs, our OL, and run defense we faced later in the season? Really though, if you look at it we really attempted to run pretty much consistently throughout the season.

1st half of the year:

Georgia – 23 times for 2 yards. Granted that includes sacks, but our backs carried 9 times for just 24 yards. Playing from behind would have limited attempted carries.
GT – 41 times for 158 yards
NC State – 23 times for 103 yards. Playing from behind and having trouble keeping NC State off the field limited carries.
BC – 40 times for 231 yards
Syracuse – 37 times for 116 yards
Pitt – 30 times for 164 yards. Playing from behind in the 2nd half limited carries.

2nd half of the year:

FSU – 43 for 188 yards
Louisville – 36 times for 125 yards
UCONN – 42 times for 129 yards
Wake – 54 times for 333 yards
SC – 43 times for 265 yards
Iowa State – 40 times for 128 yards

The outliers in the 1st half are the 3 games we lost and it's common for rushing attempts to be less in losses. We still struggled to run the ball in the 2nd half of the season except for the FSU, Wake and SC games.

Could be some of both but we expect the staff to put a functional offense on field beginning the first game. Its hard to argue that our staff made the right adjustments in a timely fashion last year.

All Brice would have had to done is play decently in the Ga and NC State game and we are in the playoffs.

Apparently you didn't read any other comments. He clearly was not "...the only one who thinks...", although he clearly was in the minority by a big margin. In MHO, Brice could have helped quite a bit in a backup role, relieving DJ when he was clearly hurting, or when he was clearly not playing well enough as the starter. But we clearly had lots problems in the offense last year, not just in the QB. Believe Bricee could have made the difference definitely in the NC State overtime. Could also have made the margin closer in GA game, because GA definitely wasn't playing well either. But still would have been a down year for us!

Re: Am I the only one who thinks

You could pretty much name any middle-of-the-road QB and it would have helped our performance last year. There was a reason DJ's QB rank was so low. Still, I doubt we would have beaten everyone.
Like most of you, I am hoping for better play from a lot of players this year, and I think we will see it. Hopefully fewer injuries too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You guys saying no

Aug 17, 2022, 10:59 AM

Admit we would have been at least marginally better on offense. Well, thats all it would have taken to win all the games we lost. Which, at minimum would have put us as ACC Champs and into the playoffs. Our shortcomings on o-line and WR would likely have ended the run there, but we almost certainly, at minimum, make the ACC title game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think that's clear at all. Chase played OK for us

Aug 17, 2022, 11:08 AM

mostly in mop up duty, and then was really bad once he transferred out. DJ played really well for us in 2 starts in 2020 which is honestly more than Chase Brice showed at any point at Clemson. His only serious action was the Cuse game after Trevor got hurt and he was pretty uneven. I'll give him credit for getting the job done, but the running game with Etienne is what really carried us. Brice had 83 yards and a pick with no TDs.

Re: You guys saying no

Aug 17, 2022, 12:00 PM [ in reply to You guys saying no ]

I don't think it's that simple. We still had struggles on our OL and were very limited at receiver even before we lost more guys later in the season. I could see the NC State game being a win, and maybe UGA, but even our defense struggled against Pitt. Pitt put together 6 drives of 9 plays or longer in that game, and their 3 offensive possessions in the 2nd half totaled 37 plays and took over 19 minutes combined.

Even those saying we'd have beaten UGA with better QB play is simply taking the 10-3 score(3-3 if you take away the pick 6) and assuming everything else goes the same way. Who is to say UGA wouldn't have done something different on offense if we put up a few more points? We'd also still of had to overcome no blocking for our backs and no time for our QB to throw.

We probably lose 3 more at least if Brice is the QB, he’s too wreckless and throws a ton of INTs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we had Chase Brice AND our 2016 or 2018

Aug 17, 2022, 11:02 AM

WR corps then maybe. We still wouldn't have been better overall than Georgia, but maybe we would've been good enough to beat them on that day since their offense didn't really do much of anything against us in that game. I think if we played UGA a month later they might have best us pretty badly though.

FWIW, I think us only losing to Georgia by 7 has caused some of our fans to overrate last years team. Sure we played them pretty close, but we also only beat GT by 6, BC by 6, Cuse by 3, FSU by 10 (with a fluke TD on the final play), and Lousiville by 6 after a 4 play goal line stand. In addition to the other 2 losses of course.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’ve said it before

Aug 17, 2022, 11:08 AM

Clemson won in spite of DJ not because of him? Hopefully he now has his act together. He has improved but has he improved enough to beat the tough opponents? Time will tell but we can’t experiment once the real season begins.

You may be the only one that thinks. He would have moved the ball better against Georgia.Without the pick six one touchdown would have won the Georgia game. With the heart of that win we would have swept the acc. Playoffs are a different story, but who knows.

Re: Yes, surrounded by literally NO talent anywhere on the field

Aug 17, 2022, 1:02 PM

Plus transferring in during Covid at Duke. There was a LOT wrong in that situation. I'm not saying he was Trevor or Deshaun. But he could make the short and medium throws all day, something DJ frankly couldn't do with ANY consistency last year. Btw, yeah, WR was clearly an issue from mid season on, but you can't tell me WRs didn't short arm a few balls and slack on some routes knowing the ball likely wouldn't make it to them. Happens in the NFL all the time. A even slightly better passing game keeps WRs engaged more.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yes, surrounded by literally NO talent anywhere on the field

Aug 17, 2022, 2:52 PM [ in reply to Yes, surrounded by literally NO talent anywhere on the field ]

During the 2020 season at Duke Brice threw for 2,170 yards with 10 touchdowns and 15 INTs and a 54% completion percentage.

The Duke QB in 2021 threw for 2,358 yards with 7 touchdowns and 8 INTs with a 67% completion percentage.

The Duke QB in 2019 threw for 2,078 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 INTs with a 58.5% completion percentage.

The Duke QB in 2018 threw for 2,674 yards with 22 touchdowns and 9 INTs with a 60.5% completion percentage.

At the very least the 3 other Duke QBs in the 2 years before and 1 year after Brice performed better than Brice with similar talent around them. It's also not as if many other quarterbacks around the country were jealous of the talent DJ had available to him at the receiver position last season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you think Duke talent = Clemson talent?

Aug 17, 2022, 3:22 PM

You dont think Chase would have done better than the below with Clemson's talent? This was DJ's season last year - looks pretty similar to what Chase did with Dukes talent:

2021 season stats
YDS. 2,246. 77th.
TD. 9. Tied-99th.
INT. 10. Tied-92nd.
QBR. 43.2. 97th.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If our guys were at full strength, no.

Aug 17, 2022, 3:50 PM

But what we actually put out on the field last year was probably bottom half of the conference. And not having a single guy on the team that could actually play slot was a major problem.

And regardless of the WR talent at Duke vs Clemson, it doesn't challenge his point that, in the last 4 seasons, Brice performed the worst of all their starting QBs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If our guys were at full strength, no.

Aug 17, 2022, 4:59 PM

Chase went from enthusiastic to disappointed and basically broken when he went to mayoville. He was a gamer at Clemson and that was gone at duke. His stats there prove only that point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Am I the only one who thinks

Aug 25, 2022, 2:20 PM

Clearly the one thing all of you missed is that DJ has a talented little brother that never considered Clemson because of your attitudes toward DJ. Oh well, someone else should benefit.
