Allow an old guy to rant a bit on behalf of legacy daughter.

Jul 9, 2020, 1:12 PM

Here we are in mid July, and no real concrete plans for classes, let alone athletics. I don't think the situation is going to change dramatically in the next 2 weeks, so how bout we define a plan of action? ! I am certain that my big out of state tuition check will arrive on time, regardless of what happens. My daughter lives off campus and had to execute a lease. We would really have no great options, should the decision be made to do everything on line, other than "shut up and pay the bill - quality of the education product notwithstanding". This is her senior year - not like she could realistically "take a year off, and try again next year", at this point. Such a sad situation. I feel for all of these kids, especially those that just graduated from HS with no ceremony and no definitive indication of what the plan is this fall. I do believe CU is committed to some type of classroom experience, at least (unlike some others). The logistical and monetary side of this is pretty ugly at the moment. There... I feel better ...

we were newly weds my last year at Clemson and I commuted from Gville. A group of us had real concerns last semester about getting enough gas to go to school and graduate. We made it fine. I agree about todaays students. Much different set of challenges. I have always belived what doesnt kill you will make you stronger. Of course sometimes it just makes you smell stronger. ;)

Yours is a good rant.

The pandemic impacts different people differently. Young people who have been aiming for year or so on starting college in the fall of 2020 are getting a real bum deal out of Covid-19. There isn't much one can say to help them.

All those who finished college this year are looking at a really tightened up job market. The lucky ones had offers before Covid hit and many are now working from home. And that sucks for your first professional job for most people. But the unlucky ones who haven't got a job yet? They are really screwed.

All those whose wedding plans were killed by Covid-19 raise your hands? You got screwed.

And what about all those parents who were perhaps more excited than their kids about them starting college, or graduating, or getting a job, or getting married?

Covid sucks.

Another old guy rant here.

Been paying every month for an off campus apartment

that my son wishes he were using. But more importantly, as you pointed out, he is a senior, scheduled to graduate in December. His spring was already screwed up. He is stressed out about possibly missing his last football season. But most importantly, if he is going to graduate on time, he has to do some clinicals that can't exactly be done online. Strange times, indeed.

We are headed to Clemson this weekend to spend it in that apartment that we are paying for that has been empty since March.

Valid rant!

I have two in college. One is a senior. Really stinks for him.

Also, paying two apartment bills. If classes go virtual, sure wish I didn't have to pay two apartment bills. Seems almost like a waste. But I suppose they will have some amount of social life, even with COVID.

My double legacy daughter who was bridged and decided to go a different route transferred in to Clemson this year as a surprise to me and the wife. We were all overjoyed and she was finally excited about college. We too signed the lease for an off campus apartment which starts requiring the monthly payment next month and the tuition bill is on the way yet we don't have a good feeling that she will have on campus classes.

My high school junior hated e-learning in the spring and can't stand missing the sports seasons which started with soccer in the spring and looks like it will probably continue in the fall. I really feel sorry for all the seniors though both college and high school.

To top it off, the wife teaches and is dead set that face to face classes are the only way to go and I agree with her. It looks like we are going to be dealing with these issues at least until November, maybe longer, so we need some leadership in all areas who will make good decisions and move forward.

Go Tigers!!!

My husband just got tested for the 3rd time in like 4.5 weeks. He has allergies, and afib which causes him to get sinus infections due to acid reflux his meds cause. He has had a sinus infection, a migraine, allergies acting up....blah blah...so they keep sending him to get tested. I think this time he has it though. He's been throwing up for 3 days now and has congestion and is coughing.

Husbandnator has been working but really doesn't get around people that much, but no telling where he got it. I could have brought it home from the grocery store...who knows now. It sure would have been nice to have the curve dropped, but we got what we got.

Now the only question is does he really have it(3rd time is probably an unlucky charm this time), and did me and my son get it too?

So I agree that it affects everyone differently.

And is seriously considering taking the fall semester off until (hopefully) things shake out. Not an easy decision and we may be stuck with an apartment to sublease (if we can), but can’t say that I blame him.

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter’s situation. We’re in a similar boat in my house. My son will be starting his freshman year and is supposed to be moving into his dorm in a little more than 5 weeks. Clemson’s “plan” is pretty short on details at this point vs. what some other schools have announced. He could have gone to Georgia Tech or Georgia (in-state for us) but he’s grown up loving Clemson, so his mom and I are paying out-of-state tuition for him to chase his dreams there. After a screwed-up last semester of high school, he’s facing an uncertain start to college. To make matters worse, the schools that many of his friends are attending seem to have more definitive plans for how classes will go at this point - some are starting early and completely finishing by Thanksgiving, some have announced longer class hours during the weeks to fit everything in, etc... but no true details from Clemson on those things yet. Feels like they just want us to pay first, and get the details later. Very disappointed for him and his fellow freshmen... and pretty disappointed in my alma mater at the moment. Hopefully we get a more robust plan soon.

I, too, have had the cynical thought about "just get the $$ first". But I honestly think they are trying to put something together to get the kids on campus to some degree. It's difficult to fully commit to a plan with all of the moving parts. That said, I am disappointed, as well. Hope things work out for our kids - they all deserve better.
