All time coaching question...

Jan 25, 2023, 11:14 AM

There is still a lot of basketball to be played...and I know the typical trajectory for Clemson late in the season...

But, that said, if Coach Brownell leads the boys to another win in Chapel Hill, and then an ACC Tournament Title, where does he rate all time among Clemson basketball coaches?

For all the frustration so many of us have felt, he's the all time winningest coach, the first ever to win at Chapel Hill...and if he adds an ACC tourney title? That's hard to beat, even with the ACC being down and all.

What do you think? Where would you rank him?

Brownell has already won more games than any Clemson coach, won at Chapel Hill and will have a statue on the lawn at Littlejohn if we win the ACC Tournament.

I'll wait for the tournament results, we have had good years and seem to flame out in the tourneys, at least its a good year for regular season,

put this SEASON at or near the top all time in Clemson basketball history. But, one season does not a career make. Just ask several college FOOTBALL coaches who actually won the NATTY, and then were out of a job within just a few years after. (Gene Chizik and Les Miles come to mind immediately.)

Just look at the opposing coach from last night. Seven years at Tech, made the Big Dance five of the seven years, and already has an ACC Tournament Championship under his belt.

Unless and until Brad Brownell puts us more consistently into March Madness, I would continue to rate him behind Barnes, Ellis, and Purnell in the Clemson roundball coaching history.

If he accomplishes that but goes one and done in the NCAA tournament again, I'd rank him right alongside Ken Hatfield.
