All this NIL, Portal, etc isn't bothering me because

Jan 4, 2022, 8:32 AM

I'm just a fan of Clemson University. Spent the best 4-1/2 years of my life there. My sister, brother, father and grandfather all went there, as did a nephew and several cousins. It's literally part of my life and a thread running through my family. I definitely cheer for Clemson football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, etc. I want every Clemson team to win every game and to finish on top every year and I want them to represent my alma mater well. But my life is not tied to any one sports program. I wear my orange and my tiger paws because I'm proud of Clemson University, not just Clemson football, or basketball, or whatever. It's always nice when teams do great - like soccer this year, football and baseball in years past, and basketball that one time - but first and foremost I'm a fan of Clemson University, both what it is now and what it has been in the past. I do care about how the NIL and the portal affect Clemson football, but it is what it is. Life goes on. But Clemson University will always be there!

Go Tigers!

Great post. If a person, lives and dies with every football play, he or she is just a football fan not a Tiger fan. If a person who says he or she is a Clemson and was not as thrilled and full of pride when Turk Pettit and our soccer team won National Championships, they are not Clemson fans and only bow down to the God of football.

I am also a fan of all things Clemson. As a '95 grad I will forever be connected and will always be proud of our accomplishments.

At one point in time I was a massive football junky which included the NFL. I could sit and watch football all day as long at it was Power 5 vs Power 5. I could watch any pro games.

Along the way I lost interest in the NFL and now hardly watch it. For a few years I still had college football to look forward to, but now everything has changed.

NIL and the transfer portal are literally going to ruin the game if it is not regulated.

Texas has a non-profit that agreed to a deal to pay any O-lineman on scholarship $50,000 per year as long as they remained on scholarship. Assuming each player has a redshirt year, an O-lineman playing for Texas could pocket $250,000 in 5 years. To clarify, this is not starting lineman, this is all O-lineman on scholarship. Texas had the highest ranking O-line recruiting class as of the December signing.

Now Caleb Williams is basically selling his services to the highest bidder.

As it stands currently, the playing field is no longer level and college football is quickly turning into semi-pro football.

All that being said, if nothing changes and this continues, I am not sure Clemson will be able to keep up with schools like Texas, Texas A&M, and a lot of other schools when it comes to the money it can offer players through NIL.

I've found that as my life gained more meaning outside of Clemson football (wife, 2 healthy kids, great career) I've put less importance on Wins and Losses.

Still fun to watch the games, but I don't wake up the next morning in a funk if we lose anymore.

Also, after watching Clemson in September, I stopped having any expectations and was just amazed anytime we actually scored a touchdown.
