All in Favor of College Preseason Games say, "I"

Aug 21, 2021, 8:38 AM

With the way everything is changing (NILS, conference expansions, etc.)in college FB who would be in favor of a pre-season game? One exhibition game!
As suggested on another thread - this could be the game versus FCS opponents! You get them a nice check and you beat up on them while not worrying about how decisively you beat them. You play all your freshmen and project players to see what they do in the exhibition.

The people who want to basically end football the way we know it will say; "it's another opportunity to get hurt"! Problem is; you could get hurt in a scrimmage against your own team now. Why not make the athletic department of say, Oh I don't know: Clemson and SC State or Citadel some money while also getting some young players valuable game reps with no fear of it dropping you in any rankings?

I am sure there are some logistics I may not have thought of; so I am asking. Anyone else in favor of something like that happening?

Eye say, it should be mandatory that we scrimmage Jawja

in the preseason in any season that they are not on our schedule.

I guarantee both teams would play it just like a game, and the coaches would get more useful tape out of that one scrimmage than out of a month of normal camp practices.

Sell tickets just like a game, and either turn the money over to designated charities, or use it for NIL amongst the two teams.

That would be good; I agree!

***Only problem is every year the ASPCA would be coming after the Tigers!

No .
And it has nothing to do with injuries or money making opportunities.
It has to do with the fact that these young men are first and foremost "students".
Some are already arguing for a 12 team college football playoff system ,yet even Dabo is opposed to that( so is Mack Brown). You can also argue that one of the main reasons for this 3 conference "alliance" is to keep the number of games from getting out of hand.
So, IMO, 15 games, including the CFP's should be more than enough to satisfy even the most ardent fans.
You want a preseason game that doesn't count. Then eliminate one game that does.

I get what you are saying! They are first and foremost "students" thing is what I was getting at. Are they now; really? Still? Do not get me wrong - I believe they are; but are you and I in the minority on that?

Dropping a game isn't a bad idea if the revenue is going to be the same for the pre-season game!

Next week, week 0, would be good for that. All FBS teams could support the FCS by playing those within their states or neighboring states.

What a turnoff to see the Tigers on the schedule play one after a game like Jawja, but also when they’re the week before the coots. It’d be good with one of twelve regular season games being a G5 team then the rest power 4 teams.

I've always had the thought of why risk the health of of your 3 deep players on an absolutely meaningless game like the cup cakes that's usually scheduled at the start of the season. Your team doesn't get one grain of credit for the win, if they lose, it becomes the main story throughout the season during every game...

Also, when a team has the caliber of talent that our Tigers have 3 deep, when they play those cup cakes, they are relaxed bc they expect to win, and that's when the injury bug will bite. If those types of game are going to be on the front end of the schedule, at least choose teams that could have a chance to win if our guys go into it slacking!!!

We aren't the coots, and teams like the Citadel, or SC State don't even give our guys a challenge, so why risk injury with teams that are put away 8-10 minutes before half time, and you can't sharpen iron on wood!!!!

Allinallorangeallthetime52 - I do not disagree!

A couple of thoughts on what you typed out.

Saving hits on the players is not going to happen. They hit each other in practice in preparation for the season.
I agree with you on scrimmaging some team that can challenge you! I was going for the angle of trying to help the FCS in state schools: Wofford, Furman, SC State, The Citadel or maybe even Coastal or Charleston Southern.

College football is the only level of football without "scrimmages"! It doesn't hurt h.s. kids to my knowledge - and I am not suggesting they play a bunch; I am proposing 1 scrimmage.
These kids are on campus a good month before the regular students all no doubt have played against opponents from other schools in h.s.

Go back and look at this camp and every camp the last few years and there have been injuries where 1's were playing 3's or there was mixed line ups "IN CAMP"!
I do not believe the risk goes up just because of the jersey being different. Cost was another reasone I thought in state schools. So Clemson isn't flying to Southern Cal or vice versa to play an exhibition game. Georgia would be a great choice in the years we don't play. Iron does not get sharpened by wood. But, the only way to know if you are ready for the game is to play the game. Practice against your friends and plays you have seen a bunch of times in practice may not give you what you need. Some kids don't practice well; but shine in the game. Some are the opposite - why find out who chokes up when the lights are on - "when the lights are on for real and it counts"?

No half assed football. It’s terrible in the nfl and would be no good for college.

The vast majority of players are kids getting life experience and a college degree. That goes double for FCS students.

As much as I would enjoy watching another game, I have to say no in the best interest of the players. Also, having a team prepared for the first game without the benefit of preseason is becoming one of the few remaining factors that separate it from other levels/other sports. A wildcard factor that helps separate the best from the rest.

Put me in the "Yay" vote.

I like the idea of a Spring Game scrimmage (I think Dabo has touched on being for that too) and Fall Camp FCS scrimmage.

Just use a running clock for the second half or whatever kinda rules that helps.

-Injuries can happen in practice

-If the "student" formality is so big, let's make the scrimmage has to be played before class starts.

Pretty sure most teams get sick of hitting each other during camp anyhow so why not give them a tune up scrimmage so to speak to practice against an in-state FCS
