Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 8:35 PM

Alabama's line it's worse than Clemson's. They've been terrible all year, just goes to you what an elite QB can do for a team. Having a few top notch playmakers and good play design also helps.

Yah they are trying to make up for it as well with a bunch of pitches to the RB on the outside… nothing up the middle. Which is smart if you know that’s your weakness

Kinda like an adjustment we should have made by the third series in our game vs UGA..

Yep, I know it’s a little tougher to make in game adjustments but we struggled to make game to game adjustments. Glad we got run heavy at the end or would we have lost more games whether that’s online, qb, or play calling

Clemson would be playing for the National Title if we had Bryce Young and they had DJ.

Yea, but we’d be running Shipley right into that big fat D lineman.

Wonder if we had meetchie and williams if DJ would have looked better?

You can’t seriously think that Clemson’s o-line is superior to Alabama’s o-line...

Didn’t we in the year with only five or six healthy tiger lineman, correct?

Think he’s making the point that is just a big weakness on this years team compared to last

I think his point is about the QB, but the first sentence is crazy...

Oh yah I definitely agree not worse than our O line

Re: Alabama O-Line

Hard pill to swallow, but it is. Alabama- 2.71 sacks allowed per game. Clemson-1.62 sacks allowed per game. Clemson ranks better than Alabama in 6 of the 9 advanced line statistics tracked. Considerably better at many of them.
Check for yourself.

Just imagine if DJ played for Bama and Young for Clemson, those stats would be even more in Clemson's favor.

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 9:53 PM [ in reply to Re: Alabama O-Line ]

Bama attempted 514 passes this year while Clemson attempted 414. I’m also going to go out on a limb and say Bama attempted several more downfield passes which results in the QB holding the ball longer which creates a higher risk for sacks.

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 10:19 PM

They have up sacks at a much higher rate with a much more mobile QB. Their oline was awful this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 10:24 PM

How is Young more mobile? He had 43 rushing yards on the year. I’m not arguing the Bama line was good. I just don’t see where our line was better while pointing out the number of sacks doesn’t mean much considering how much more Bama threw the ball and their tendency to throw down the field more often.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:04 PM

Watch Young move around and then watch DJ. His rushing numbers are so low due to the sacks. He's immediately under pressure constantly. Clemson's line was made to look much worse due to DJ's immobility. Switch QBs and Clemson would be much higher rated than they already were.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:10 PM

Sacks count against rushing stats for every college quarterback. I doubt being sacked an average of 1 extra time per game than DJ resulted in him having nearly 300 less rushing yards than DJ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:36 PM

Now you're just arguing to argue. Any person that has watched the two QBs play knows that Young is much more mobile. Arguing otherwise makes you look like you don't understand anything about football.

Those stats aren’t opponent adjusted.

Which Clemson lineman would start over their Alabama counterpart?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:01 PM

That's because you can't exactly opponent adjust individual stats. Jordan McFadden was the 3rd highest graded tackle in the country. Alabama was one of the worst lines in the SEC and the country. That's not an opinion, it's a fact.

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:16 PM

You mean the same position that a potential top 5 NFL draft pick plays? Left Tackle Evan Neal... Come on.. McFadden was great, but he would play RT if Neal was on Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:38 PM

Not saying he is better. Clemson's line was among the better lines in the country the second half of the season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 11:46 PM

That is exactly what you are saying.. that Clemson has a better O-Line and you said that McFadden was better. It’s just isn’t reality and you know it.

Re: Alabama O-Line

Jan 10, 2022, 9:42 PM

Bama is trying to help negate the uga interior with some creative play calling. We made no adjustments at all. Also although our OL got beat up by UGA not all those sacks were on them. The QB has to sometime move a bit in the pocket, or throw the ball away.
