After reading the WAPO article

Jul 24, 2020, 2:19 PM

I have a few observations.

1. Just unbelievable that the writer put zero context to the Pearman slur. It was either on purpose, or he is really lazy and did no homework on the subject he was writing about.
2. They made like Swinney demanded the Westzone redo. He wasn't even head coach until 2 years after it was completed. Not a big deal, but that points to inaccuracy and lazy journalism.
3. The comments by Mrs. Trotter were very reasonable and, in the end, complimentary of Swinney, "That man is good". She sounds like a very nice and reasonable mom and I hope her son stays committed to Clemson. I think she will be very happy with the result if he does.
4. Everyone talks about Dabo's silence for seven days after George Floyd. There were no other coaches saying anything during that period either. At most one or two, certainly not more.
5. The idiots in the beater cars, with confederate flags, going down the street before the unity march in Clemson. There were about five cars, no Clemson insignia on any of them, no sign that they had any association with Clemson at all. These types show up any time there is a march against what they believe in. It happened in Charlottesville, it would happen anywhere. That's what they do. They have no relation to Clemson whatsoever.
6. They really paint a picture of Dabo as being a person that he is not. A person that was really off base. These players, past and present, love Dabo.
7.Love K'Von Wallace.
8. Writer wanted to paint a picture of a southern problem, but he needs to write articles about Minneapolis, Washington D.C., and other locations in which minority men are not treated very well.
9. Not a complete and total hatchet job, but there was certainly no good intention.
10. Again, lazy and inaccurate to indicate that both decommitments were due to Swinney and the George Lloyd response, or Pearman. Foreman decommited long before any of this. Hancock was always very excited about possibly going to Ohio State and they never stopped talking with him.
11.There were some nice things said about Swinney and others in the program and the program itself.

Yes, and I forgot to point out that the writer very well

knows those confederate flag cars had no connection to Clemson and would be at any protest or march.

Articles like this BS is why former players of Dabo’s need to speak out loud and often just like these media stiffs do trying to destroy the man. Come to his defense loudly and in numbers.

100% agree. This is the answer and winner post. They have

to a good extent, but they need to be as relentless as the media. However, when they do come out, it is mentioned by people like Finebaum as an afterthought and given about two seconds. But you are right, our former and current players need to be relentless.

I agree. I’ve been disappointed that more current and former players

haven’t spoken out in defense of Dabo and our program. They had a wonderful experience at Clemson, and Dabo always had their back. Now he needs them to have his, and most have been very quiet.

I understand that the “thing to do” is stick with the BLM stuff, but it would be nice for more of his players to support Dabo while still standing up for what they feel are racial injustices. The two aren’t mutually exclusive at all.

Cancel culture has Dabo on its list...

Jul 24, 2020, 2:27 PM

He checks too many boxes of things they don't like. It really got started when he spoke out against student-athlete compensation.

Now , after two championships,he's the tallest nail.

And Clemson being a southern, rural school makes it easier.

Never fear, though. I fully expect them to focus on another coach soon. It's just Dabo's turn.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You would think they would focus on real issues like Iowa,

Jul 24, 2020, 2:30 PM

but they have no desire to.

I'll add that a few of the quotes seemed to be plucked and put into his own context for the article. In addition to that, I think he used McCorvey to backhandily show disapproval of Swinney to the average reader. Obviously he doesnt see Swinney this way but the article paints a different picture....

(1) Noted that McCorvey let Swinney have it after his lack of public comments after Floyd's death. Then after Swinney commented he states it wasn't enough and shouldn't have used a christian slant on it.

(2) gave the impression he really disapproved of Pearman's comments but just left it at that (wonder if he went after the players too?) says he wouldnt explain further and then 'trails off' leading one to beleive he doesnt really want to say what he thinks...(that openendness that lets people finish Mccorveys thoughts for him - in their own slanted words)

(4) He then goes on to insuate that slaves built all of Clemson or at least black people and they should have their names on the buildings....? It lets on like Clemson is the black mans enemy in some off way....am I reading those comments incorrectly?

(5) His final comments on the question if Swinney can adapt or understand all of this (like he doesnt have a clue - ####### question) he answers it like he doesnt really know but gives a stern piece of advice.

Maybe Im taking it all the wrong way, but this guy sure seems to have used McCorvey (Dabo's trusted 'cheif of staff') to state his real purpose of the article...

I wonder why McCorvey even provided comments unless he did it with the intetion of clearing Swinney while not knowing the artcile wanted to muddy the waters and leave it for the average reader to decide. Or maybe bc Trotter's mom was involved and felt like Clemson needed a minority voice as well?

Just my deep thoughts on it.

His agenda is dual being a gamecock, they want company. This won’t affect recruiting, every time Dabo has had unfair challenges he has risen to the occasion.

Remember the folks fighting him about his beliefs, our recruiting got better.

Look at our recruiting now, it’s soaring. We only have 5 more slots left and we have our targets lined up. We take a backseat to no one in recruiting. We want the right guys for the program.

I hear you. Being a Tigers fan it is a tough read.
That said there is some truth to it. I am not daying hr is a racist but Dabo was late to the party and did not grt thr memo soon enough. He has his hard set beliefs.

He is one of those diamond in the rough that got to see the limelight. Thus an outlier and not part of how life goes. This bias clouds his beliefs.

I think he will learn fast but lets say Clemson is going to take some hits. Times have changed. Dabo will too. His past players will rally. Unfortunately the digital world will not help Dabo short term.

Re: After reading the WAPO article

Jul 24, 2020, 7:41 PM

I actually walked away with a slightly different take.

You can tell the writer came into this article with the presumption that Dabo was a bad guy...it started like it was going to be a hit piece...and then I got the sense the folks who talked to the writer sort of pushed it in a very different direction.

Dabo's a huge, high-profile target, and as pointed out, he does fit the profile that's easy for northern liberal newspapers to lampoon - Southern, religious, conservative, unapologetic and outspoken about his beliefs.

The thing is, even in the face of some missteps - which even Dabo himself admitted he made - he's such a good man and genuine human being his recruits, parents, players, and staff all continue to swear by him as a human being...and this turned what clearly started as a hit piece into a grudgingly positive summation of Dabo the human being.

And more to the point, Dabo listened, owned his misperceptions...and moved on. All you can do, as a human being. Which is exactly why he'll come out of this better, and so will the team and program...while a lot of others are going to get caught in this societal churn and fall down. Mike Gundy, for instance, may survive (for awhile) the fallout from the Chuba Hubbard incident, and Kurt Ferentz may survive (again, for awhile) at Iowa...but their locker rooms are never going to be the same, either...and recruiting is going to be an uphill sled for both.

Whereas every person I've personally talked to still thinks Clemson's locker room and culture remains the best part of the program...and this is in 2020, almost inarguably the most tumultuous and unsettled year in American history since probably 1968.

WaPo clearly went into this article with Dabo in their crosshairs. In the end, despite a few counterpoints that did seem forced or actually kind of unfair, ultimately they passed surprisingly positive judgment on Dabo. And that in itself speaks volumes about the guy.
