There is a real problem with the "food service" industries

May 28, 2022, 8:24 AM

these days. Or, at least with a local branch of one of them. We frequent the drive thru at local McD's a couple times a week, for either breakfast or lunch. We have finally had to resort to just sitting at the window while we check the contents of the bag, because they simply cannot get an order right the first time, or sometimes not even the second time!

I know, this is not an earth shaking problem, but it IS pointing out something else. People just do not seem to be invested in doing a good job anymore, whatever that job might be.

Another example, Bro-in-law hired a local yard maintenance guy to remove a line of shrubs (Azaleas) from their yard, as they have just gotten to be too much to maintain. Notice, I said REMOVE. All the guy did was nub them down near the ground, all the roots are still there! So, eventually, they will grow back. Bro-in-Law was tied up dealing with Ma-in-Law, and didn't get out to check until after the guy was gone. (Had paid in advance, a mistake.)

I am reminded of the winner of the "Not My Job" poster contest years ago, where a yellow line painter for the Arizona Highway Department had painted right over a dead possum in the middle of the road, instead of removing it. These young snipperwnappers just don't seem to have any pride of accomplishment in their jobs anymore.

Oh. almost forgot. GET OFF MY LAWN!

:)

...the best way to get a better job is to be fantastic at the one you have. And you will enjoy that job more while you have it.

Yea, it’s factual that folks

May 28, 2022, 8:35 AM

just don’t care about their work anymore. There are some good ones, but far more bad ones you have to sort through. I do though take caution more than I trust, as a result. I’ll have to say though, I rarely eat fast food for more than it just being risky service so the take there is a bit of, “you get what you paid for.” That and the BOL example being, never pay before the job is done.

Good points All.... I don't frequent the burger joints. I prefer Wafflehouse.... That way I can watch what they do while they cook and if something makes me uncomfortable, I won't eat it.

You sometimes don't know what you're getting in the bag.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, it's Saturday... Only one more day to work this week.

Doesn’t matter where you are or what franchise it is, there are obvious problems. My pet peeve is the change. Now I know most can’t count change, that’s what the register does for them. But they hand you your bills with the receipt on top of them, then your coins. How many times have you dropped the coins either on the ground or in your lap or down under the seat? I know it’s not “earth shattering” but when I was their age and working various jobs handling money, always taught to hand them the coin change first, then announce that next dollar, then if a larger bill the other bills. But, I guess not being able to count would make that impossible?

Not even going to mention the incorrect orders!

Re: There is a real problem with the "food service" industries

This is an interesting thing I have noticed. When you go through the fast food restaurants, such as the ones at the McD's, Wendys, type levels in the South, there are primarily African AMericans or a few poor white kids working. When you through similar fast food restaurants in let's say Southern California, there will be primarily Hispanics working those jobs aside from In N Out Burger, which offers college scholarships and pays better. Anyway, the food is worse at the ones in the South and the service is worse. I don't know why that is the case, but it is the factual case from lots of experience. I think those Hispanics are more appreciative of the job, because they probably weren't born in the USA and just want the work. I think people born in the USA after multi generations don't get inspired working in the fast food industry. Maybe it's just a cultural issue. Who knows? Anyway, the South has the worst fast food service and quality. JMO

Re: There is a real problem with the "food service" industries

May 28, 2022, 9:49 AM

Why the TD? It's fact. Tons of people will tell you the same. The fast food in the South is worse, for whatever reason. It's a lot more common to get your order messed up or food that doesn't taste as fresh, for whatever reason. It's also worse in little small towns in the South than it is in a bigger city in the South. I don't know why. It's just true. You get fast food in Dillon and it's worse than fast food in Greenville. Why? I have no idea.

Yes....I should have stated that. On the other hand, it doesn't really seem like many white people are working at McD's in the South, so I said poor white teen. Most people just assume that black people in the South are generally poorer overall. You are correct though. I was stereotyping some. That said, the poor Hispanics in California just do a far better job. Maybe I should just say the fast food restaurants such as McD's and Wendys are far more efficient with better quality out West. It's noticeable. It's odd.

I agree that McD’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, KFC, Bojangles, Hardee’s, etc aren’t good primarily because of the quality of employees they hire. Chick- Fil-A is about the only fast food place I venture into in the South. I agree on the previous comment about Waffle House being good. Steak and Shake and Culver’s are also good along with Five Guys.

I was on the west coast last week and got my In and Out Burger fix and it was good as always. Whataburger in Texas, Shake Shack are also good with good employees.

Not sure why some attract good employees, but McD, BK, Hardee’s, Bojangles, Wendy’s and KFC can’t. I assume it’s what they pay.

The dining room at the local Booger King hasn't been open in at least 5 months.

May 28, 2022, 11:11 AM

But the other day I was driving by and the sign said "Dining Room Open!. So myself and a couple other dudes walked in to actually be able to sit down and enjoy a meal at this fine dining establishment.

We stood at the counter for a moment, and as with a lot of fast food nowadays they'll pretty much ignore you if there's no one else in line. So I said, "hello" loud enough for them to hear. A manager looking lady walked up and said, "inside is closed", so one of my friends said, "but the sign says...", and before he got it out she jumped in and said , "you don't see anyone else in my store do you?!". We called her out for her bad attitude, she said we were the problem and she threatened to call police to have us removed.

Corporate got a call, and an "investigation" is ongoing. Should know the outcome by next week. The sign still says, "dining room open".

But yeah, to your point, many of them can't find help and when they do they just don't seem to care or have any idea what a "service industry" is.

This all seemed to come about as things opened back up during the pandemic. I don't know if it was all the free money or what, but to your point the industry is very broken right now. Hopefully it will recover.

Now, get off my lawn! :)

May 28, 2022, 1:04 PM [ in reply to The dining room at the local Booger King hasn't been open in at least 5 months. ]

Denny's in Dodge City, Kansas. We were in town to visit the "old west" Dodge City, and stopped in for lunch one day. There were about four other tables of customers in the whole place.

We sat at the table for 45 minutes (I timed it), and had the manager looking over her glasses at us the whole time, from the cash register. No waitress ever came to our table, even though we were looking around, obviously wanting someone to help us.

We finally got fed up enough to get up and leave. As soon as we stood up, THEN the manager came hustling over, trying to stop us. She was apologizing, this and that, but I had had more than enough. I told her, flatout, "Lady, stop with the bullsh!t. You have been looking at us sitting here for 45 minutes, and did nothing to get anyone on your staff to assist us. We are taking our business elsewhere now."

This was probably 15 years or so ago, not long after the Denny's chain got sued for some discrimination against black customers. They obviously took the message to heart, because it seemed the only tables GETTING service that day were the two out of five that were occupied by black customers. Businesses should be colorblind. That is easy to say, but evidently hard to do.

fair enough, but I have never had problems with fast-food workers. You can do what I did and get an an argurment that you do not want a whopper sandwich, that you want a whopper hamburger. i had the entire Burger king rolling.

And It is true, I get free stuff at drive through all of the time. Once you realize that these kids have no loyalty to the companies you work for, you'll find out that they love giving out free stuff. you should try it. Next time they get your order wrong, tell them a funny story about how it ruined your day, tongue and cheek of course, and they will do whatever you ask them to do, including giving yo 11 syrup packages for your big breakfast. I find if I give them q specific number, they will literally count them out for me. I am also extremely good looking and very charming, that at helps :)

I don't give a dammmmn what people are paid. If you accept a job, then your responsibility is to fulfill requirements for that job, giving 100 percent effort. And it's managements' job to make sure you do, If a business can not operate accordingly, then the SOB should shut down.

I started working at age 14 in a drive-through restaurant and have worked my asss off for 60 years...still working (by choice) at age 75. I worked my asss off the entire four years at Clemson. And I do not buy into this "poor me, sob sister" bullshittt that we are constantly put through every dammmn day with inexcuseably sorry service throughout the retail trade, including fast food joints and restaurants,

The originator of the problems? The cotton-picking businesses themselves that do not set clearly-defined and strictly-supervised standards for their managers and supervisors. Those failures trickle down to the employee behind the counter...and it's disgusting at best, despicable at worst.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's simple, yet it's not

May 29, 2022, 9:29 AM

1.Simple in that clearly we have a values issue for a lot of folks working in the fast food industry if you're looking at workplace efficiency -- much like what has been mentioned in this thread, taking pride in one's work is sorely lacking nowadays in plenty of work establishments.

2. Also, the establishment you visit is often as efficient as the management running the place.

I've only been to one establishment that has consistently had a great combination of both despite the pandemic and that's Chick Fil A.

Going back to my first point, work ownership, I've definitely noticed that folks holding down jobs in the fast food industry typically are a reflection of their home life.

It drove me nuts in school and certainly does in real life to see folks simply accept the "not my job" status quo or that minimal effort is some sort of actual value -- (sometimes all you can give is the minimum, we're human, but that shouldn't be the baseline).

The honest truth is their home life is most likely crap and, outside of the entertainment industry influences, work is just seen as something you have to do versus something that helps build character and can drive you to the top.

Nowadays, for a lot of the young crowd, it's about going viral and passively making money so you're not relegated to having to work a low level job like fast food -- nothing wrong with that aspiration but like going pro after college, only a small percentage of youth are going to luck into something like that which also leads me to the next point...

3. A lot of society demonizing lower level jobs like fast food.

Idk who decided to use fast food jobs as the whipping stick of how to define life as a failure but they help create an ugly stigma that if you work fast food you're basically a low lifer if that's something you want to make a career out of.

Growing up, I heard the same that probably many others heard: "do you want to be flipping burgers at 30?"

I remember I made it a priority for my first job to not be fast food because of this rational so I worked for a grocery store.

And let's not forget a long standing argument prior to the pandemic of...$15 an hr? WHY SHOULD I PAY PPL THAT GET MY ORDER WRONG $15 AN HR TO FLIP BURGERS??!? MINIMAL WAGE JOBS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE CAREERS.

I saw this with trades coming up through school too -- working hard in a trade was seen closer to lower class living because "why work hard when you could get paid more doing an office job after getting a degree?"

Which then leads to other discussions but my post is already long enough so that's for a different time.

4. In closing, I definitely didn't grow up in an ambitious household -- just a few steps above poverty -- but I had just enough influences that led me closer to the straight and narrow and had I not had the value of ownership displayed and instilled in me earlier in life, I probably wouldn't be near the person I am today which is probably why we see a lot of lower level jobs like fast food struggle the way it does with workers.
