Africa Covid hospitalization rate dropped 91% after 2 weeks

......yet U.S. officials use the new variant for fear mongering knowing that it is less deadly by an astronomical percentage. They have refused to to listen to the one country that has gone through it already. Don't get me wrong this whole pandemic has been nothing short of some in Washington to become dictators. They love the power and like some said in the beginning don't let people in charge to get away with shutting anything down because once they get a taste of power they don't want to let it go and hear we are 2 years latter and we have political leaders still grasping their dict. Government has ONE purpose and that is to protect your Rights as an American citizen, full stop. No more no less. They're not here to be your doctor, or professor, or parents. Yet so many in this country have willingly relinquished that power thinking the Government is going to save them. They do NOT care about anything but your vote. Very few give a rip about you so long as you vote for them. They feed people lies to scare them then you have the useful morans out here who spew those lies. You've been lied to about the death rate, hospitalization rate and the case rate. You have hospitals over ran because they have scared everyone to the point that when they get the sniffles people run to the hospital thinking they're dying and anyone that works at a hospital with an once of credibility will tell you that. They have allowed other diseases to go unchecked and undiagnosed to the point that deaths by those diseases are down by factors double and triple digit percentages. Yet ppl continue to believe the lie. You can believe what you want but if you don't think for a second that a lot of bureaucrats and politicians in Washington aren't making hands over fist money you aren't paying attention. These ppl hold stocks in these vaccine makers and here we are blindly letting them get away with giving our money to these crooked pharmaceutical companies they hold interest in. It's time to wak up. The sad thing is how many people will comment and push back on this post with the Government talking points as if the Government has trained them to sell what want. Sad.

This one we agree on. My father in law was in pretty good health - played golf, worked at Publix probably 4-5 days a week - then he got Covid and was dead in 16 days. No underlying conditions. And these guys want to try to tell me it wasn’t Covid and I’m stupid because I believe the doctor’s diagnosis. I am a conservative too. But I can weed through misinformation and make my own decisions. And I respect anyone else’s decision whether they decide to get vaccinated or not. It’s their life. It shouldn’t be political.

talked to actually, deny the existence of covid. The origins and why it exists, however, are highly debatable. Second, define "pretty good health", including BMI, past medical history, meds that he was on, etc.

I have worked as a consultant to pulmonology and critical care for the entirety of the pandemic, there are VERY few people that I have seen die that have a BMI < 30 and no comorbidity factors. When I say very few, I am talking less than 10. And I am in an ICU across the southeast 4 days out of the week.

enormous impact on the health and health systems of America. Consider that over 40% of Americans are obese, then factor in other comorbidities, and Covid is extremely dangerous, and preventing and treating it on it's own is necessary.

I did have a good friend who was in "pretty good health". 62 years old, never smoked, moderate (social) drinker, played golf and tennis, no heart disease, no diabetes, probaly 15 lbs overweight. Unvaxxed. Got covid, went into hospital about 10 days later. Went on ventilator about 2 weeks later, then died within a week. Before he passed, he told everybody that not getting vaxxed was a mistake, and urged everybody to get the shot.

I agree that the whole thing has been politicized, and you have to weed through all of that to get to the truth. It appears that now, the latest variant is much more contagious but much less deadly and much less likely to put people in the hospital. I have lost many friends and acquaintences to covid, and while most of them I'm sure had comorbidities, I'm also confident they would not have died had they not had covid. Having said that, I'm certain that politicians and their media mouthpices are overhyping the seriousnes of the current variant, based on what I have seen and read so far. Some people will die from it, and some will require hospitilization from it, but nothing on the scale of what we saw with earlier strains.

So what you believe is that from your example a mortality rate of 0.3% is worth shutting down our economy, driving thousands of small businesses to close, delays in other needed medical procedures, seeing a huge spike in mental health issues, especially in children, and firing front line medical workers who were there prior that vaccines? And of course no Covid mandates at all for thousands of illegals crossing the borders in droves.

Actually to have 3 die of the same thing in a short period of time is pretty unusual. You left out the others that were left disabled. You also didn’t consider that vaccinations and other procedures probably kept it from being worse. I’m a conservative as well, but that does not mean that I choose to ignore science or cherry pick statistics to make things convenient for me. We have a small family business and have struggled bc of this as well.

Unless everyone of his employees contracted Covid at some point, your statistic is wrong.

I have an aunt and a friend that have both died from Covid. I do not take the virus lightly. I also know that the virus is going to have to mutate to a more contagious, less deadly form to get us to an Endemic stage. I believe that the Omicron version of Covid is the beginning of that process. The news out of South Africa is very encouraging. If we can see the number of Omicron cases increase without slamming our hospitals, we should be excited. We also need to be cautiously optimistic and remember that Delta is still causing some infections.

You do realize this poster is speaking of the new variant. My Doctor said this variant was actually great because its super contagious and packs much much less punch. Its what viruses do. This version is the endemic strain. Its nothing remotely close to the original strain or the Delta variant but will create herd immunity.

IF IT IS SO EMBARRASSING DID YOU SHUT DOWN THIS WAREHOUSE. SURELY YOU HAVE BEEN SHUT DOWN FOR OVER A YEAR SINCE THE DREADED IS STILL AROUND. SURELY IN YEARS PAST YOU DID NOT HAVE EMPLOYEES THAT DIED OF OTHER ILLNESS. LOSING ANYONE IS JUST AWFUL BUT LIFE IS NOT FAIR. MILLIONS OF PEOPLE DIE EVERY YEAR IN THIS COUNTRY. COVID WAS NUMBER 3 ON THE LIST LAST YEAR. I AM 66 AND HAVE LOST SEVERAL FRIENDS THIS YEAR FROM VARIOUS THINGS. GUESS WHAT, THE WORLD DID NOT END FOR THEIR FAMILIES OR ME. COVID-19 was bad. Delta was/is bad.

I think there is a lot of overreaction to Omnicron. I don't think it's much more than the flue, even if that bad. You would only have to ask XT about it.

The first two, were bad. My brother-in-law was in the hospital for 17 days, on oxygen for 2 months after that. And is just now able to return slightly back to normal. He still has a ways to go. Delta nearly killed him.

I suspect we will be invaded by newer less deadly strains for the next few years.

Get the vax. Or, don't get the vax. It should be your choice like the flu shot.

Time to move on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, by your account, the mortality rate is 0.3%?

is an expression of confirmation bias, not good fact-based judgement.

1. Hospitals aren’t overrun due to scared people with the sniffles. They won’t be admitted for mild symptoms—there aren’t enough beds.

2. Lower hospitalization rate is offset, at least in part, by greater risk of infection. Efficacy of both the vaccine and natural immunity are lower in fighting omicron.

Here is the latest report on lower hospitalization rates, which is GOOD NEWS for all of us. Stop trying to spin this for another pointless BS political rant.

In fact most professional sports leagues ( and some medical professionals) are re-examining their protocols for asymptotic positive tests. (At least mentioned pro sports so some legitimacy to post.)

2. You have absolutely lost your freaking mind.

It's been the same song and dance from these folks for going on 2 years now. The first thing we heard is it would be gone in a few weeks, then we heard it's no worse than the flu, next it was libs were trying to hurt Trump, then it would go away on election day, then the vaccine has nano particle to track you, then the vaccine will turn you into a zombie, etc, etc, etc.

The simple fact is you've been railing about the virus for two years because the only peson you care about is you. Don't worry that this has sucked for all of us, libs and conservtives alike. I get it, you are healthy and MIGHT not be affected. Your selfishness has perpetuated this virus longer than it needed to. You call yourself a patriot but something tells me that when rationing occured in WWII, you would have been weaing a zoot suit, eating rationed foods, and whatever else because you know what...the gov't can't tell you what to do.

And this is neat from Denmark. They actually keep track of reinfections, amazing. Think about 1 in 30 roughly are reinfections.

Just have to see how it plays out. If it's 50% less severe and 200% more transmissible, that's a net bad. If it's 90% less severe, and 200% more transmissible, that's good. Just have to wait. Lot of sick people either way.

And no one is shutting down anything, except SOME local governments, which is as it should be. And the Lexington Town Council relished in their totalitarian authority when they enacted the local mandate here in our little town. Our government, on all levels, is funded through taxes. They know that. What is their motivation in preventing economic activity again? It decreases tax revenues, which is the REAL source of their "power".

Organizations are being cautious, yes. And that is the prudent thing to do. The data you just quoted (and it's South Africa, not Africa. Africa is a continent, not a country) took 2+ weeks to accumulate. No one could have made any fact-based conclusions about the severity of the variant/impact on hospitilizations 2-4 weeks ago. Folks got pissed in the beginning when assumptions were misproven with time (airborne - vs not), so I'd prefer they do wait until more is known vs risking making another poor assumption.

And sure, other countries were acting out of caution while the world learned more about Omicron. That's common ####### sense, if you ask me. but I've learned that a lot of people in this world don't have that.

also, we haven't reawlly shut down. and those of us in SC, GA, FL, other states never really did at all. Let's be honest about that. and stop bitching about #### that never happened.

I could continue about how the demographics of S. Africa are different than the US and how those differences could have a definite influence on the impact of omicron on our population vs others...but I'm sure I'd start talk over your head and you'd shut down because it's not feeding whatever storyline you have writtenin your head.
