Big Opportunity to bolster the culture at Clemson O-Line

The Present:
John Simpson or Chris Hairston may be the best NFL lineman from Clemson over the past 15 years. 2020 4th round pick Simpson was the 1st Clemson o-lineman drafted since 2014. He has 11 starts for the Raiders.
2014 pick Brandon Thomas was injured (knee) and did not make it in the league for long. 2011 draft pick Chris Hairston had 36 starts over his solid pro career. It's been strangely slim and well documented -- the Tiger skill players have overcome a lot with very average to poor o-line play. Jackson Carman has been rocky this year but is learning NFL guard play.
For the past ten years, looks like Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Florida, Bama & Ohio State have the best o-linemen. Not a big surprise.
The Future:
Recent line recruits including Leigh show potential if they can get in a game. And there is no value in bashing our highly paid and well-liked current O-line coach. Still, Dabo has a chance, with rumored upcoming retirement, to make the biggest and most important hire at Clemson since Brent Venables. At O-Line Coach not OC.
It's a challenging hire as it affects style of play and impacts the amazing recruiting Dabo and staff have achieved with skill players over the past 10 years. But IMHO Dabo should go after the best of the best and be willing to open up his own wallet if needed for what could be a tremendous payoff. We know Dabo sold Clemson to BV, and BV has loved Clemson while excelling at his craft. I hear T. Austin is a candidate, but I would love to see Dabo go back to the midwest to pull another BV with a tremendous O-line coach. We know Clemson has a lot to offer, and Dabo and BV can certainly reinforce that fact.
IMHO this hire could define Clemson's ability to take the program back to the highest level as well as protecting top QB talent and opening up running lanes. Yes, the midwest. Find a coach with loyalty and proven quality (in terms of recruiting & growing NFL prospects) and pay him big. Of course, it's up to Dabo and how he sees this opportunity. Go Tigers!

Thomas Austin is going to be the next Oline coach when Caldwell retires after this season, unfortunately...I wish they would look elsewhere but this won't be the case. Another former Tiger taking over a key position that's been a deficiency for years.

from within plan for the Oline coaching position - that being Thomas Austin.
Dabo knows more about football and coaching than 99% of us but I can't help but think we are already too "inbred" on the Offensive side of the ledger. The only Offensive coach that is NOT a Clemson grad (and having played for Dabo) is Robby Caldwell. All the rest (Elliott, Grisham, Streeter, and Spiller) are Clemson men and while that is fantastic for the culture it can also be a road to complacency and eventually stagnation.
Our offensive coaching staff is full of guys that only know the "Clemson way" which can often lead to an attitude of "that's the way we have always done things at Clemson". That attitude is great when things are going well but when things aren't going well the lack of outside Clemson experience and different perspective can lead to a death spiral.
What will be most telling to me is what this coaching staff does in the off season. If we go out and visit/talk to other coaching staffs in the country (like we used to) then I'll feel a little more comfortable in that Dabo realizes we need to get some fresh perspectives/ideas on things. If we don't seek fresh perspectives and instead hunker down in the "we won two natty's this way" mentality then things may be rough again next year...

Dabo has done well when he chose to go outside of the family.
True! I think after the season there could be more shake-up than people think. Or at least; I should say; I wouldn't be shocked.

I agree with the sentiment. We are the only team that has been consistently great without a great offensive line. Bama, Oklahoma, OSU, Georgia, ND, all of them have great o-lines year in and year out. Austin might be fantastic, but it is tough to think that Dabo is really looking at things objectively.
We have recruited well at offensive line, so the talent is there. I know that we have had injuries but I still think the line should have been much better than what it was this year. That being said, I don't see bringing in somebody who has had anything to do with this line, even if the contact has been limited.
