I get it we know him, he knows our system, maturity, experience, character but Could/Should we have done better?

If we get to the point where Hunter Johnson or any other QB transfer is playing in the 2022 season then we are having a horrible season.
No matter how good Cade looks in camp - DJ is taking the first snap games 1-4.
If the 3rd string guy starts playing we have ran into some serious issues.
He is there for leadership.

and ended up 15-0.
If that was a horrible season, I’ll take it every time.

Re: Adding HJ confirms need @ QB: Game Manager

Hunter Johnson is not 'horrible' for us if circumstances dictate that he must play.
He'll be a very good 'game manager' at QB, since he knows what he's doing.
We should not expect him to throw 30 yard completions into tight windows. We can expect him to know how to fake handoffs and dump the ball to TEs on short patterns, and we can hopefully expect him to sense when he should take off and get a short-yardage first down.
With the defense that we have coming back, a 'game manager' type QB can get us some wins while awaiting QB1 and/or QB2 to be ready to play again.

What QB's in the portal are lining up to be the 2nd or 3rd string QB at Clemson?

It comes across that the coaches might be trying hard not to scare off either a current QB or a potential 2023 commitment. I like the addition of HJ for this coming year though. It works out perfect for providing encouragement for DJ to do everything he can to improve/produce while giving a little bit of space for Klubnik to develop if needed before being thrown in the fire.

We weren't going to get anyone who has expectations to start with what we have on campus already. I think we hit a homerun in getting a guy that knows the offense and has starter experience if he's needed down the road.

What do you expect?….

We are already set for a QB battle with DJ and Cade. This is clearly the best case scenario…bringing in HJ. What could be better for 2022? Guys aren’t lining up in the portal to mentor other QBs and prepare for coaching, while being capable, ready players. We got the one who was willing to do that. No one was going to come here and start over DJ or Cade.

Any QB we got from the portal would be for depth purposes only with no real expectation to start. Given that I think HJ is the very best we could get as he is already familiar with Clemson's scheme, coaches, and a few players.

Clemson gets am experienced and serviceable back-up to play behind DJ and CK, and HJ gets a free graduate degree.

While I agree that if HJ plays much next season it probably means we are doomed, we really couldn't have done much better, portal wise, at QB than someone like him.

We pay the coaches big bucks to make good decisions and then question their moves. If Dabo thinks this will help HIS team I’m all for it.

We could be undefeated/1 loss team next year with HJ at QB if he is a mediocre game manager.
The defense is that good and the only difficult game on the schedule is Notre Dame.
I'd expect we will be favored in every game except Notre Dame.
USC is actually giving me pause because they might be solid by the end of the year if the QB produces for them.

247 Composite Score

Klubnik. .9901 Uiagalelei .9949 Johnson. .9854
Notable QBs still in the portal.
Caleb Williams .9969 Jaxson Dart. .9694 JT Daniels. .9919
There is no way that any of these three would come to Clemson to ride the bench.
Some QBs that have committed to other schools.
Kedon Slovis. .8683. Going to Pitt Bo Nix. .9857. Going to Oregon Quinn Ewers. 1.000. Going to Texas Spencer Rattler .9942. Going to be a chicken Dillon Gabriel. .8667. Going to Oklahoma
I have not found a QB with so much potential as HJ that is willing to ride the bench as a backup. Maybe he is a bust. Maybe he needed more time to develop. Maybe the change of scenery combined with different coaches and quality players will allow him to shine. I do not know how this is going to end. However, I do feel that Dabo pulled a rabbit out of a hat on the transfer. I am excited and thankful that HJ is coming home.

Great insights in the responses to this. The cfb landscape is very volatile right now with the portal and nil. This was a brilliant move to bring HJ in as a GA but also an emergency backup if something crazy happens. For instance, what if Cade beats DJ out, DJ portals, then Cade gets injured. Both could get injured. This is a great depth move.
