Actully, his decision says something deeper to me

Sep 27, 2018, 10:05 AM

I was an All-American athlete at Clemson - I know the mentality behind working for a starting spot. The truth is, if you REALLY think you're the better player and SHOULD be the starter, you come back with a vengeance to prove yourself and get "your" job back.

The fact that KB decided to transfer seems to say that he knew deep down that he couldn't earn the starting QB position back from TL. Once TL was able to overcome the experience/playbook factors, KB had no other advantage over him.

Hate it for KB - but this is all part of being an athlete. I think the parting shots were more frustration over having to admit that internally (and the "embarrassment" of it being known publicly) that his best wasn't enough in this situation. And possibly the deeper feelings of the thought or realization that his dream may not be attainable. And that's some tough stuff to deal with.

Just my opinion.

I played tennis. And yes, a professional career was on the line (albeit very different).

To be clear, I'm not knocking KB's decision at all - I think it's actually a decent move for him. Just made me think he really feels like he can't earn his job back over TL. And if that's the case, why does he think he deserves to be the starter (based on his comments)?

and I think that someone gave him some bad advise.

Sep 27, 2018, 10:40 AM

I think his decision to transfer is a mistake but it's his decision and he has to do what he thinks is in his own best interest. I get that and I harbor no animosity towards him in that regard.

The problem I have were his parting comments to the Greenville News on his way out the door.

He may have been getting recruited by another school and they got in his head.

I wish KB would have stuck it out. Obviously TL was going to start but KB would have still gotten to split reps and if TL went down he would have been in the drivers seat by himself. KB doesn’t have the talent for a pro career so I don’t know what starting for one year at a substandard program gets him in life. I wishhe would have stayed loyal to his brothers and supported them on another National Championship run. I think he will regret this decision but I know I didn’t always make the best choices when I was his age.

What shouldn’t get lost in all of this is that we have the real deal at QB right now and it has no where to go but up. Exciting if you think about it

Very true. Years from now, we'll be thanking our stars for having had the privilege of watching this kid live. It's already pretty special.

What's really cool is we're getting to have that same feeling a lot more often these days. - i.e Spiller, Sammy, DW, Power Rangers, etc.

I'm not in the know .

do you guys get benched? even when you do, I'm guessing after you graduate you can pick up a coach and try to make it on the circuit.

not knocking you just curious how the collegiate to pro tennis world works.

Re: so tennis is a bit different yes?

Sep 27, 2018, 10:32 AM

Yes, you can be "benched" - but in tennis, that means you're not in the lineup. So, you don't play.

And you're exactly right about the professional side of it. You're not reliant on a team drafting you, so you can always go out and make it on your own. The flip side of that is you also don't get any kind of a paycheck unless you produce results - and you're responsible for all of your own expenses.

I try to do the best at everything I do.

Sep 27, 2018, 10:30 AM

I've seldom proven to myself that I'm the best. I learned early in life that I could abandon my hopes of being the best at anything until I got married and had children. I tried to be the best Daddy in the world and failed miserably, imo.

Looking back on life from the age of 66 a man will know that the failures of childhood dreams are trivial, the challenges of things which are temporal are trivial and the failures to manage the outcomes of those aspirations also become trivial.

This entire thing is much to do about nothing. True happiness is not related to career success and as the old folks used to say, 'Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it.

I'm not defending KB, but perhaps thats the source of his comments.

Sep 27, 2018, 10:56 AM

I would suspect that he does indeed believe he's better, but I bet he also believes the staff wants to put time into building the future even though KB believes he's the best choice.

That would make his comments make sense.

Sep 27, 2018, 11:11 AM

I hear what you're saying. My only thing on that is, if that's truly what the staff was thinking, why wouldn't they have played TL a lot more earlier. KB still seemed to get most of the snaps until last weekend, when it just got overly obvious.

Either way, if that's what was going through his head, that would certainly make more sense.

IMO, when it comes to the best competitors - if they truly think they're better, they want everyone to know it. And have a fierce drive to prove it.

I just don't think he thought he could overtake the kid at this point. Which is a shame, because if TL were to have a mediocre game Saturday and KB played well, the whole thing could've flipped the next week.

On the Podcast of Walt's show from yesterday, you'll hear Tajh Boyd say that once they flipped the ###### and went with the freshman, it was his job, Kelly wasn't likely getting it back....decision had been made where TL was the clear #1 now, and KB was the clear #2 and in Tajh's words "would have only been a safety net", hinting that KB knew that and that was part of why he made the decision he did. So even one of our own ex-ACC Champion QB's said the same thing.

Re: Actully, his decision says something deeper to me

Sep 27, 2018, 12:12 PM

The thing is, I don't think they did that because he was the future, or because of some recruiting promise. I think they did that because they saw on the field what many others saw - he gave the team the best opportunity to win.

KB leaving is an indication he didn't think he was ever getting it back as well - for whatever reason.

His parting words are what lead me to believe he still thinks he deserves the starter role.
