ACC's proposed killing of 2 divisional champs automatically..

May 9, 2022, 7:45 PM

playing in ACCCG is good news to me since Clemson has played in couple, imho, where the division opponent wasn't worthy.

On the other hand this 2 division championship sequence seems to work like a charm more often than not for the SECCG.

What thinks you?

No more divisional championship banners. Alas.

Will a team ever put one up if they finish #1 in season then lose championship game?

What about ties? What about all the participants trophies! Gasp!

Seriously I think it’s better when all teams play each other in the same year. You can’t do that with more than about 10 teams in a league. Unless you reshuffle every year you’re always going to have some team with a weak schedule and some with heavy schedules. Over time it balances out but in specific years it can stink to high heaven. Unless you’re the SEC meat grinder, with Mizzou and Vandy and SC. LOL

I think you'll really only be losing one division champ (who has 3 or 4 losses) instead of losing two. There'll still be a regular season champ. Maybe even co-champs, in which case nothing will be lost. Regular season championship rings for both teams.

The 2 best teams will still play for the Championship but there will always be arguments about whether the strength of schedules are equal. Wait, there are arguments now about schedules so why change?

Swoff killed academics at UNC so the ACC can kill about anything

All conferences should have just stayed at 10 members so that you play everyone in the regular season. Then you would have had a real champion determined during the season. Sorry but the ACC never needed BC, Pitt,Miami, VT and of course ND. We could have an 8 or 12 team playoff starting on what now is conference championship weekend. Greed is ruining the college football.

You could still accomplish regular season league champs without having to play each other each season. The SEC had 10 teams and only 7 league games up into the 1980's, and the Big Ten had 11 teams and an 8-game schedule, neither of which stopped them from declaring rightful champs. Going back a ways the Southern Conference had 20+ teams and determined a league champion.

For the purpose of auto-qualifying Power 5 conference teams into an 8-game playoff with a regular season conference championship title, there's precedent for it. With 3 at-larges available, that would more than account for scheduling imbalances in any given league.

Thing that seems weird is that 2nd place team didn’t win anything to qualify for the game . . . Probably just my own hang up but somehow i like the symmetry of having two divisions, each with their own champs . . . Even if they aren’t always symmetrical in terms of quality . . . At least now you have to play all the teams in your division and win it to qualify for the game

I am still a fan of divisions... just not the arbitrary ones we have now. I am not a fan of cross division games counting towards division standings either.

Split North/South -NC and South, VA and north or (real post 1977) ACC vs ol' Big East.

The only two school that would have an issue would be Miami/VT (big east) or UVA (north/south). Miami might want to get back to beating northern schools for some swagger. I thin, FSU might take that deal too

ACC: GT, Clemson, UVA, WF, NCSU, UNC, Dook
BE: Cuse, VT, UofL, BC, Pitt, FSU, Miami

Also, 2012-2014 we were better than the Coastal Champs. I think we beat GT with a healthy DW that year.

2012 was rough, 6-6 Georgia Tech ended up being named the Coastal Champ because Miami was ineligible. We could have taken that FSU team in a rematch in Charlotte, easily.

2013 I'm not sure we could beat that FSU team in a rematch, but at least keep it closer than 51-14 and make them work for it.

2014 If DW stays healthy and doesn't tear his ACL, I think we beat FSU in the rematch even with Jameis. Could have played Dak and MS State in the Orange Bowl, who GT clapped.

2015 was an even match, 2016 I think rematch vs Louisville could have been fun. 2017 was going to be a wash since Miami is fake news, and 2018-2019 weren't going to have anyone from the Atlantic do any better than Pitt or UVA. 2020 is the odd year, and I think last year was as good as we could get in the ACC CG given the circumstances.
