ACC roster talent rankings

Jul 25, 2022, 8:38 AM

1. Clemson - 96.50
2. Miami - 84.50
t3. Florida State - 81.50
t3. North Carolina - 81.50
5. Georgia Tech - 68.50
6. NC State - 62.00
7. Pittsburg - 57.00
8. Virginia Tech - 53.50
9. Boston College - 45.50
10. Louisville - 43.00
11. Virginia - 38.00
12. Duke - 37.00
13. Syracuse - 25.00
14. Wake Forest - 15.50

The things the stand out the most… Dave Clawson is an incredible coach and I wonder how well he would do at a program with more resources. Geoff Collins might get fired this year, but he has brought in enough talent for their next coach to find immediate success. If Doeren and Narduzzi could recruit better, or utilize the portal more effectively, they could turn NC State and Pitt into perennial top 25 programs. Fortunately, Tony was able to keep Armstrong, Thompson, and Wicks. But he has his work cut out for him next year. Hopefully he establishes his culture quickly and can start landing big time recruits/transfers.

Shows how unacceptable losing to Nancy Tate is.
Pitt’s coach isn’t the mouth-breather that Dumb Dave is.

You have to give Doeren credit for developing his players. They’d be significantly better if he could recruit as well as Mack Brown does at UNC.

I assume all credit is due to the assistants. Because Dave’s “brain” is concrete. I’ve heard him speak.

Is this the talent level numbers of the entire roster? Just curious what the talent level would be of the one/two deep would be. I'll assume this includes transfers. Thanks for putting this together.

Ga Tech jumps out at me. Haven't paid much attention but they must have been bringing in some recruits.

It’s the entire roster.

Georgia Tech has recruited pretty well on Collins, but they’ve mainly thrived in the portal. They’ve brought in several former four star recruits through the portal. Does that bode well culturally? Probably not. But it’s undeniable that Collins has transformed their roster from where it was under Paul Johnson. I think Collins gets fired this year. Their new coach will inherit a lot more talent than he did.

GT ranks last in the ACC in returning production from last year's team too at just 49%.

Collins is hoping like heck the transfer portal works magic for them. And if he isn't, he should be. Their average recruiting class rank is 44th over the last 5 years. The hope is, the players from the transfer portal the last 2 years especially are better than what's he's recruited.

It also suggests that we should easily win the ACC.

Jul 25, 2022, 9:31 AM

Although as we saw last year, being the most talented team is no guarantee of success. We have to earn it.

I’m not sure any other team would have been bowl eligible if they dealt with the amount of injuries that we did last year.

But, yes, we should easily win the ACC this year. We dwarf everyone in talent.

Talent can't help much

if you're constantly down (due to injury) 10-20 players most of all which were on the 2 deep.

Can you do a comparison to teams from other conferences? Interested how Ole Miss, Vandy, Arkansas, Iowa, etc. match up to the middle/lower tier ACC.

Jim Grove had a similar coaching trajectory at Wake Forest

Jul 25, 2022, 9:46 AM

He was ACC Coach of the Year at 11-3 and played in the Orange Bowl at the mid point of his Wake career. He finally parlayed his Wake experience into the Baylor job, but only stayed one year. I think he’d turned down the Nebraska job a few years earlier.

I guess what I’m saying is that perhaps certain coaches thrive in using a specific method for slowly building a program like Wake to a certain level, but may not necessarily be able to transfer that to a program with more resources, but less patience.

The Grobe example may or may not apply to Clawson.

Time will tell.

Re: Jim Grove had a similar coaching trajectory at Wake Forest

Jim Grobe had retired from Wake. He was out of coaching for 2 years before agreeing to take the Baylor job. He did 1 year to help turn the program around and get it going in the right direction after the scandals and firing of Art Briles.

After the 5th game (even though they were 5-0 at the time) he told the AD he would coach through the bowl game but he would not be a candidate as the coach for the future. That was his 20th season coaching and he was ready to retire for good.

Wake was very similar to that of Clausen to this point.

Grobe effectiveness at Wake seemed to plateau and decline after he peaked with the ACC title an Orange Bowl.

I do remember pretty clearly that Grobe was offered the Nebraska job at one point, but decided to stay at Wake. Not sure why, but perhaps he knew his limitations?

Re: Jim Grove had a similar coaching trajectory at Wake Forest

Jul 25, 2022, 11:34 AM [ in reply to Jim Grove had a similar coaching trajectory at Wake Forest ]

That definitely makes sense. But there are programs that have more resources than Wake, while also being patient enough to allow him to build his program. Within the ACC, I’m thinking of programs like UVA, Pitt, Louisville. I feel like CLawson could do very well at those type of programs. Pressure to win immediately isn’t that big.

Could you confirm how the numbers are calculated or is there an index you used? I know the blue chip ratio does something similar in terms of ranking the talent on teams but wondering about the metric you used.

Thanks!

5 stars = 2.0

4 stars = 1.5

Top 1000 = 1.0

Re: ACC roster talent rankings

Jul 25, 2022, 11:57 AM

I wouldn’t put too much stock in these numbers. All ACC talent that was rated a 3 star is much more valuable than a 4 star that doesn’t play. A few ACC teams have a lot of 3 star players than will be drafted next year.

Re: ACC roster talent rankings

For the most part, recruiting rankings are a good indication of a program’s success. There will always be a few outliers though (Wake vs FSU) where cultures are significantly different.
