ACC Baseball Notes

Jun 16, 2021, 1:33 PM

NC State, Virginia Keep ACC Streak Alive
This marks the 15th consecutive year that the ACC has placed at least one team in the College World Series and the 10th time during that time period that multiple conference teams made the trip to Omaha. A total of 28 ACC teams – nearly a quarter of the total field – have earned CWS berths since 2006. NC State is headed to the CWS for the third time in program history and the first time since 2013. Virginia will make its fifth appearance in Omaha and the first since the National Championship year of 2015.

Down But Never Out
The Wolfpack and Cavaliers both stood one game from elimination more than once before punching this year’s CWS tickets. NC State fell 21-2 to top-ranked Arkansas in last week’s Super Regional opener before battling back to win two one-run games on the road. Virginia dropped its Columbia opener to host South Carolina on June 4 and responded with four consecutive wins. The Cavaliers then lost to Dallas Baptist in their opening Super Regional game but took the next two games to keep their 2021 season alive.

The Rest is History
Virginia owns a 12-8 all-time record in four previous CWS appearances, including a 6-1 mark en route to the title in 2015. The Cavaliers faced Vanderbilt in the Championship series in back-to-back years (2014 and 2015), with each team claiming the National Championship in a decisive game three. NC State is 3-4 in its two previous trips, with a 2-2 mark in 1968 followed by a 1-2 showing in 2013 that included a 1-1 split versus ACC rival North Carolina.

ACC By The Numbers

1 – Duke’s ACC Baseball Championship title was the program’s first since the conference began deciding its champion via a tournament format in 1973.

2 – Two ACC catchers are among the three finalists for the Buster Posey Award – Florida State’s Matheu Nelson ad Louisville’s Henry Davis.

3 – Three ACC teams rank among the top five nationally for most all-time tournament appearances: No. 2 Florida State (58), No. 3 Miami (47), and No. 5 Clemson (44).

3 – NC State has advanced to the College World Series for the third time and the first since 2013.

5 – The Golden Spikes Award list of 2021 semifinalists includes five from the ACC in Boston College outfielder Sal Frelick, Florida State catcher Matheu Nelson, Louisville catcher Henry Davis, Notre Dame first baseman Niko Kavadas and Virginia pitcher Andrew Abbott.

5 – Five ACC pitchers have struck out more than 100 batters this season -- Virginia’s Andrew Abbott (152), North Carolina’s Austin Love (129), Florida State’s Parker Messick (126), Wake Forest’s Ryan Cusick (108) and Boston College’s Emmett Sheehan (106).

6 – The ACC has placed at least six teams in the NCAA Tournament field each of the last 17 seasons.

6 – NC State is appearing in the NCAAs for the sixth consecutive season and has earned a bid in 16 of the last 18 years the tournament has been held.

8 – The ACC’s eight teams in the 2021 NCAA Baseball Championship field were the second most of any conference. This marks the fifth time since 2010 that the ACC has placed at least eight teams in NCAA tournament.

15 – At least one ACC team has reached the College World Series in Omaha each of the last 15 years the event has been held, and multiple ACC teams have reached the CWS 10 times during that span.

15 – This is the 15th time overall that the ACC has sent more than one team to the CWS, with all multiple-team appearances taking place since 1994.

17 – ACC teams have combined to win at least 17 games in each of the previous 15 NCAA Baseball Championships, including a record 31 games in 2006. The conference has won 21 games so far this postseason.

23 - Career saves by Virginia reliever Stephen Schoch, who ranks second among active NCAA Division I pitchers.

24 - Virginia has won 24 of its last 35 games since standing 11-14 (4-12 in the ACC) following a loss to Georgia Tech on April 1.

28 – The ACC has placed a total of 28 teams in the last 15 College World Series, an average of just under two per season.

35 – Virginia has won at least 35 games in 15 of Brian O’Connor’s 17 full seasons as head coach.

43 – Florida State’s 43rd consecutive selection to the NCAA Baseball Championship field continued the longest active streak in the nation.

57 – ACC-leading number of runs scored by NC State sophomore Tyler McDonough, who is also tied for the conference lead in doubles (20) and ranks second in total bases (142).

90 – Number of bids earned by ACC teams over the past 12 NCAA Tournaments.

98 – Combined number of College World Series appearances by the ACC’s current 14 baseball programs, including NC State and Virginia this season.

142 – Including last weekend’s NCAA Super Regional competition, the ACC has won 142 games versus non-conference opposition in 2021.

1,009 – Current ACC baseball programs own a total of 1,009 wins in NCAA Tournament play while posting a winning percentage of .574.

1,148 – Career wins by NC State’s Elliott Avent, who enters the College World Series ranked seventh among active coaches in total victories.

58,516 – Total attendance for this year’s ACC Baseball Championship at Truist Field, in Charlotte, N.C., which ranks as the fifth highest in the 47-year history of the event. Two games – NC State versus North Carolina on May 28 and Duke versus NC State in the title game on May 30 – attracted more than 7,100 fans.

I realize I have an extreme dislike for the SEC because of the favoritism they receive in every sport. But something has to be done about the home field advantages in the super regionals. When teams reach the super regionals, no team should have a home field advantage. They should be played on neutral fields with the highest bid hosting. That is the main reason you have all these SEC teams in the CWS. Most played on their home fields during the playoffs. ND had to play MSST. on their home field in front of 40,000 cow bell ringing fans. Too much of an advantage. It still took 3 games though. Wonder what would have happened on a neutral field ?

Does not matter....if they decide to not have teams play at the higher seed team, then they will place SEC teams at the home of another SEC team! In other words, Alabama could not play at home, so they would play at Auburn, or Miss St, or Columbia (Missouri or SC)...get it? The bidding wars would always have the SEC teams hosting all of the super regionals! You know, like LSU playing Clemson in the sugar bowl for the national championship!

It won't happen. Love your idea but what happened in Columbia is what would happen everywhere. I went to the games just to rag the coots... But maybe 1,000 fans, if that. 2 games in the regional after coots were out, the vendors shut down. They were open for the super and local news pushed for ppl to go but not many did.

Now, does that change if it were in Atlanta. Philly, or even a city that doesn't get events, Charlotte... $$$

Notre Dame blew that series by committing 4 errors in game one. One of the commentators mentioned the Irish played most of their games on turf fields this year.

Either the natural surface or the nerves got the best of them in that game. Too bad.

You're right, blew game 1. They just ran out of pitching.

Back to my original question. Who would have won on a neutral field ? I know that is a hypothetical question but I don't think MSST. would have won without the home field nuances.

Hey Tony, really appreciate you posting these numbers.

I would say there's another number you could have added. The ACC's longest running winning season streak came to a close. Number btw is 23,375 days.

Jk ?
