Here's what I see

Sep 18, 2021, 9:33 PM

With DJ, he's a pocket passer. That's what he is. He's slow and lacks quickness, that's a problem. Trevor was a pocket passer as well but also a pretty darn good athlete that could create things. DJ can't. He doesnt move well in the pocket and right now, his mechanics are a mess. Blame Tony all you want but no one is throwing deep against a 3 deep zone. So the other 8 guys are jamming the shorter routes and playing the run. Teams did this last year against ETN but Trevor could make them pay with his feet to loosen things up. DJ is not going to do that, probably ever. So either he's going to get his mechanics straight and start hitting the mid range throws he's missing that could loosen things up, or at some point some major adjustments will come.

At WR, we have no slot guy. No smaller, quick guy who can get open quick. Spector could be that guy but he's still dealing with recovery from Covid. We really miss that guy. Huge part of our offense for years, from Grisham, to Humphries, to Scott, to Renfrow to Amari. All our WR are long and lanky, but don't have that ability to separate in a short burst.

Shipley is now our feature back.

Defense is championship caliber.

Offensively with DJ at QB we're something we've not been since Kyle Parker, and Stoudt. We have a stationary QB. Our offense isn't really designed for that. My gut says we'll see some major adjustments heading in to State. No idea what they'll be, but Dabo isn't going to stick with things that aren't working long.

Replace D J. At least pull him if he is struggling.
We could have the best slot guys Clemson has ever had, but D J apparently doesn't know what ,or where the slot is.
Good rugged back. Just need to secure the ball in close quarters.
I wonder if even Dabo is working on all cylinders right now.

Decent analysis. Very few on this board see the issues at slot, but they are huge. But the problems go much deeper, IMO. Not taking numbers at O Line have really hurt us in a big way. I don't think Streeter, Caldwell, Elliott or Grisham are the guys. That's all I'm going to say.

I think it's a good analysis. Both of these are true. DW4 and TL16 covered up a lot of ills.

Caldwell is likely retiring soon

Sep 18, 2021, 10:33 PM [ in reply to Re: Here's what I see ]

Elliott is only leaving for a head job. Grisham can't go in and play slot. Streeter is fine.

DJ is simply not a fit for the offense we've run. So either we find out how to adjust to his strengths, or make major changes at QB. And right now his strengths are a mess, so that doesnt help.

We've been running these numbers with OL for years. We always move a guy from DL to adjust. OL, more than any other position, is about continuity and chemistry. We have 4 guys starting at new positions, 2 first time starters. They are definitely a work in progress.

No, Streeter is not fine. Have you seen DJ's footwork or mechanics improve since the Jawja game? Me neither.

Players have to do it

Sep 18, 2021, 11:24 PM

Most QB's get happy feet, DJ's are lead in the pocket right now. I can guarantee to that's not how he's been taught. He is not instinctual in the pocket. Doesn't slide or step up well as of now.

Re: Players have to do it

I just don't get it because that isn't the DJ I saw play against BC or Notre Dame. I don't know what to make of what's going on.

Sep 18, 2021, 11:25 PM [ in reply to Caldwell is likely retiring soon ]

How did he throw for 800 yards and whatever amount of tds last year with arguably better all around talent at wr, serious question not being sarcastic it just doesn’t look like the same guy … and yea he’s not running a 4
Second 40 but he’s very capable of running we have seen that … he’s more like a Boyd runner which is fine to keep defenses honest … problem that I have with the 3 deep argument is are we saying GT has enough talent with those 8 guys to really stop us like this … can’t believe we can’t find a way to move it a little man , I agree Watson and Trevor hid some problems but okay calling is a joke , been a huge diff since Scott left … I love Clemson and that Clemson family but I’m gonna be honest I’m tired of the hires within at this point … go out and get the best guy we already pay TE higher than any coordinator who cares if they leave us in two years … bama sure doesn’t have issues getting the best and winning with the turnaround

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He clearly isnt the same guy

Sep 18, 2021, 11:32 PM

For whatever reason his confidence is not there. Maybe Georgia shellshocked him? But even during camp we didnt hear how outstanding he was. In fact, from what I read, he had a mediocre camp.

The two long drives he showed heart at least, ran hard, even on the fumble. Still, in the pocket, he's struggling mightily

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why is Streeter “fine”?

Sep 19, 2021, 8:41 AM [ in reply to Caldwell is likely retiring soon ]

He clearly had little to do with Watson or Lawrence; those guys were plug and play and only had to get used to the speed of the college game before they were ready to start and to dominate. What other QB has Streeter developed with any noticeable improvement? He hasn’t.

I agree with the previous poster. It’s time to start looking at our assistant coaching hiring process. Time to look at Grisham, Caldwell, Streeter and Elliott, real close.

No, a lot of us understand the problems with no slot receiver. Let’s start some big secret and other teams are taking a vantage of it. However, I feel the problems go much deeper than that. There’s simply a lack of creativity and fire on the team that we’ve seen in past years

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

TU for your second paragraph alone

Sep 18, 2021, 9:58 PM

We definitely do not have a prototypical slot receiver, and we're finding out just how spoiled we were with Renfrow and Rodgers. Coaches were hoping Spector and Stellato could fill that role, but one's hurt and the other isn't ready.

I also don't think we have a true, proven #2 behind Ross, who is still knocking rust off. Cornell Powell was better than any of our guys this year not named Justyn.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you think DJ can get it fixed?

Sep 18, 2021, 9:58 PM

I think it is what it is right now and don't see him getting much better by next week so we shall see what changes can be made.

As for the slot ...if we only recruited a talented slot wr? Oh wait, we did and play him as a 4th string qb. Maybe this worked for renfrow his first year but right now we have a major need and you'd have to think Taylor is more than capable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ is thinking and not reacting right now

Sep 18, 2021, 10:18 PM

he has to fix that, coaching won't. That's instinct, and confidence.

Re: About Taylor in the Slot

Sep 19, 2021, 6:55 AM [ in reply to Do you think DJ can get it fixed? ]

That's an interesting point. Should Will Taylor be moved to slot right NOW? I get the reason he was kept at QB was because of Pho's injury and possibly being short at the position. But things are different now. Is it too short of notice to move him into the slot in the middle of the season? I dunno???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

WILL TAYLOR... slot receiver.***

Spector getting healthy is more realistic

Sep 18, 2021, 10:23 PM

than a position change in season for a true freshman

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think pretty pessimistic on Spector ..

Sep 18, 2021, 11:17 PM

As we saw last year, these covid issues don't just go away...he'll be gone awhile.

For Taylor, with him playing qb and learning the whole offense, it wouldn't be a major change for us right now. I'm sure we are eoverstating it though...if he was really an effective option our coaches would see it and utilize him correctly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Except the part where Taylor has never run

Sep 18, 2021, 11:37 PM

routes before. That takes time. Next offseason is that time

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Except the part where Taylor has never run

Sep 19, 2021, 8:53 AM

He seems to be football smart. How many routes would need to learn to be effective? I think he could be effective with 3, down 7 yards out, down 7 yards in, and a screen to get him the ball. Add in a fly route to take a safety away from play.
I would be more concerned about teaching him to effectively block.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Here's what I see

Sep 18, 2021, 11:20 PM

I totally blame T.E.
You gash a 3 deep zone with power run. Ohh,vI almost forgot. We can't run the ball either.

Re: Here's what I see

Sep 18, 2021, 11:22 PM

IMO, The problem is DJ lacks confidence in Puma because of the injury, he’s trying to be too perfect. Give TP some meaningful snaps. I think TP will deliver. Look at Trevor after that Syracuse game…

2 and 3-star talent and totally shut down our 4 and 5-star loaded offense with a simple defensive alignment. I think you may be right, but that ignores a much bigger, much deeper, more serious problem, don't you think? With our talent, and our highly paid, highly lauded coaching staff, we should be able to adjust ON THE SPOT and overcome that. The fact that we haven't after 3 games is sounding some serious alarm bells for me.
