A word of advice

Jan 19, 2022, 7:59 AM

If you’re expecting Clemson to become a perennial basketball power, go ahead and tamp down those dreams. Speaking as a 57-year-old Tiger, and the son of a 80-year-old Tiger who will back me up on this, the current state of the program is pretty much where it’s always been.

I’m not saying I don’t love Clemson basketball! Games at Littlejohn were some of the best times I had at Clemson, and I still enjoy getting to a few games when I can. I’m thankful to have lived long enough to see (well, hear about anyway) us win a game in Chapel Hill. God willing, I might even see an ACC tournament title someday. But I enjoy the good times and take the rest with a grain/grade of salt/slaw.

The good times HAVE become a little more scarce lately. It may be time for a coaching change, although I don’t think that will result in a huge turnaround (see paragraph 1). Then again Brownell did win at Chapel Hill so that nearly gives him a lifetime contract n my book.

In summary - GO TIGERS BEAT PITT!!!

Good points, but I think I heard Oliver P say "excuse me?"

Purnell at Clemson

138-90 (60.5%) overall record, 50-62 (44.6%) ACC record

Brownell at Clemson

ACC is a MUCH worse conference overall since Purnell left.

Folks that don’t get that the ACC was way tougher under Barnes-Shyatt-Purnell have a Brad bias and nobody’s gonna change their minds.

Clemson's SOS has been more difficult over the last 4 years than the last 4 years under Purnell.

In Purnell's best season, he beat 1 ranked team, and beat 3 total NCAA tourney teams the entire year. We did that last year in our non-conference schedule.

Fiction

Tell me of the strength of the mid-late 00s ACC dynasties. Tell me of all the monster programs flexing in 2007. Tell me of the ridiculous talent of the 2000 season. Tell me how UNC and Duke enjoyed the 95/96 season.

We went from a conference with 2.5 teams expecting to win a Natty each year (Duke/UNC/+1) to now hosting 5.5 teams with an expectation (Duke/UNC/UofL/Cuse/UVA/+1)

I have thought on numerous posts to join the ‘fray’ - as it were - on here concerning our bball team and the ever popular ‘fan solutions to resolve why’ we’re not better. Your thoughts are identical to mine (as a Clemson fan dating back to Tree Rollins, and then as a Class of ‘81 grad).

But I think I will add that it has been my belief is our lack of major success (ACC Championship OR a National Championship - yeah, call me delusional!) has been primarily three things.

1) Administration lack of emphasis. IF we shelled out the big bucks for a Krzyzewski, Wooden, et. al., wouldn’t they be able to recruit the top players to Clemson?
2) Barring paying for that big time coach, we just never seem to have the teams that compete with UNC, Duke, KY, Kansa, et. al., and the players that they easily get.
3) We will never (consistently) fill Littlejohn for EVERY game like a KY, Kansas, Duke, UNC, etc. What kid wants to come play in an empty(er) gym that sounds like you’re playing at the Y or your mediocre high school gymnasium?

That’s called culture. It can be changed with the right leadership and attitude. Our basketball culture is “we are what we are” that is #### poor attitude. It needs to change.

Such a change happened in football since 2009.

Let me guess, you fully expected the Football program to become the National Powerhouse it is now in 2010 right?

Yep - football at Clemson is part of our DNA

Jan 19, 2022, 9:58 AM [ in reply to Re: A word of advice ]

Clemson expects the football team to be successful. Even during the West years we filled Death Valley, and sold more season tickets than most ACC teams could fit in their entire stadium.

Look, I'd be ecstatic if basketball suddenly took off at Clemson. I grew up more of an ACC basketball fan than football (in Charlotte), so I've been aware forever that Clemson is on the outside of the axis of power in ACC basketball, to put it mildly. Things haven't changed. I doubt that they ever really will.

We should be really happy that the sport we care most about is the one we're most successful at. It could be much worse (looking at you Scar).

As a 63 year old who graduated in 81, I take a bit of exception to your words.
I don’t disagree with being elite, etc. But I do disagree with our level and quality.
The current state of our team (for many years) does not hold a candle to most of the teams of the 70’s and 80’s. Foster, Ellis, then Barnes in early 90’s. We were very competitive in a league who dominated. Finishing in the middle of the pack back then - was strong. Currently, the ACC is amazingly weak. 1 ranked team.
When has there ever been 1 ranked team from the ACC? Maybe never until now.

1967 was the last. 2007 was kinda close. UNC was ranked highly and Maryland was on the outskirts... really they likely should not have been ranked - they had a hot streak a the very end and built that "ranked" by beating a overrated Duke (8-8 that season)but then got beaten by the LAST place miami and then a early exit in the tourney.

Many years, the ACC often on had two ranked teams (guess which two) - and nearly it was always those two same teams with an occasional +1 (most often Maryland, Wake, NCSU depending on the era). Really your complaint is that UNC isn't ranked and therefore the ACC is "weak". Tobacco road isn't the ACC....

Only two ranked teams:
70, 71, 76 (because a 4-8 conference UVA was "ranked"),77, 78, 79.

Then by the mid-80s, with NC State joining the party as well as a few other teams having a good year. But again this was a "peak" not the norm.

Then we dropped back into two teams (guess which two) in 91/94 with good years in between. 00, 02, 07, 10, 11, 13, etc but you have good year in between. We have had 5+ ranked for several years in a row too.

The common thread is that it is always an ebb and flow between having a lot of ranked teams 33%+ and only having "the two" as being ranked. Ironically, when it is "only" Duke/UNC their chances of winning a NC is up, up, up.

If the ACC is weak, how does that impact us - a LOT. However the ACC flows, we follow. We don't set the pace and will never dot hat. If anything us being stronger makes the ACC's case.

I'll be honest, it's really hard for me to watch college basketball because I am a fan of the NBA, a league with massive superstars.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If this is the standard, we should…

Jan 19, 2022, 9:46 AM

Just plan on changing coaches every 3-4 years (when the contract expires), never get into a 1MM+ contract with a coach and just operate a fiscally sound program. At least this way there’s hope after a few years it *could* get better.

This seems like a lack of an athletic competitiveness/spirit by those in charge of these decisions. Seems like they aren’t chasing success but rather the lack of failure. This devalues their purpose/value as well.

Here is my two cents worth on the reason Clemson Basketball(also Baseball, etc) is supported less in person than Football. Location, Location, Location.

College Football is a big event in most college towns and fans come from Hundreds of miles because it is an all day event, there is usually only 6 or so Home Games per year, most are on Saturday, so it is easier to plan for these. The excitement around the games is geared to the success of the team but also because there are limited "events" for allot of the fans and alumni to attend and know they are going to be able to socialize with others that they know will be there. Football games themselves are 3-4 hours depending on TV coverage, Basketball Games are shorter. The only "major" population areas within an hour or so drive is the Greenville / Spartanburg area making it difficult for Alumni from other areas to get there, especially for weekday games.

Basketball Games are less of an "event". As a student back on the late 70's, I went to every home basketball game we had and this was not during a time with some of the better teams we have had over the years. I went to support the team and because it was fun to be there, but it was also easy to get there. Since I graduated in 1981, I have probably been to 7 or 8 games and that was when I lived in Greenwood from 81-88. I have not been to a Clemson Basketball game since we moved to Rock Hill in 1988 because it takes longer to get to the game than the game itself. Also most of the games can be watched on TV.

I do watch most of the BB games on TV when I can and do wish we were more successful. Last night's game was painful to watch. I, like most of the people on this board, am not an expert on what makes a team click but, Like MZ, I will continue to root for them, but have reasonable expectations.
