1967 was the last. 2007 was kinda close. UNC was ranked highly and Maryland was on the outskirts... really they likely should not have been ranked - they had a hot streak a the very end and built that "ranked" by beating a overrated Duke (8-8 that season)but then got beaten by the LAST place miami and then a early exit in the tourney.

Many years, the ACC often on had two ranked teams (guess which two) - and nearly it was always those two same teams with an occasional +1 (most often Maryland, Wake, NCSU depending on the era). Really your complaint is that UNC isn't ranked and therefore the ACC is "weak". Tobacco road isn't the ACC....

Only two ranked teams:
70, 71, 76 (because a 4-8 conference UVA was "ranked"),77, 78, 79.

Then by the mid-80s, with NC State joining the party as well as a few other teams having a good year. But again this was a "peak" not the norm.

Then we dropped back into two teams (guess which two) in 91/94 with good years in between. 00, 02, 07, 10, 11, 13, etc but you have good year in between. We have had 5+ ranked for several years in a row too.

The common thread is that it is always an ebb and flow between having a lot of ranked teams 33%+ and only having "the two" as being ranked. Ironically, when it is "only" Duke/UNC their chances of winning a NC is up, up, up.

If the ACC is weak, how does that impact us - a LOT. However the ACC flows, we follow. We don't set the pace and will never dot hat. If anything us being stronger makes the ACC's case.

Here is my two cents worth on the reason Clemson Basketball(also Baseball, etc) is supported less in person than Football. Location, Location, Location.

College Football is a big event in most college towns and fans come from Hundreds of miles because it is an all day event, there is usually only 6 or so Home Games per year, most are on Saturday, so it is easier to plan for these. The excitement around the games is geared to the success of the team but also because there are limited "events" for allot of the fans and alumni to attend and know they are going to be able to socialize with others that they know will be there. Football games themselves are 3-4 hours depending on TV coverage, Basketball Games are shorter. The only "major" population areas within an hour or so drive is the Greenville / Spartanburg area making it difficult for Alumni from other areas to get there, especially for weekday games.

Basketball Games are less of an "event". As a student back on the late 70's, I went to every home basketball game we had and this was not during a time with some of the better teams we have had over the years. I went to support the team and because it was fun to be there, but it was also easy to get there. Since I graduated in 1981, I have probably been to 7 or 8 games and that was when I lived in Greenwood from 81-88. I have not been to a Clemson Basketball game since we moved to Rock Hill in 1988 because it takes longer to get to the game than the game itself. Also most of the games can be watched on TV.

I do watch most of the BB games on TV when I can and do wish we were more successful. Last night's game was painful to watch. I, like most of the people on this board, am not an expert on what makes a team click but, Like MZ, I will continue to root for them, but have reasonable expectations.
