A thought about Juwan Howard.

Feb 27, 2022, 2:10 PM

Put this here because I see others posts about hoops. Alos put it here because it applies to all sports and also applies to our overall culture in America.

This is as much about our culture as it is about basketball. That's why I put it here.

In a "normal" society you would expect coaches to restrain players when frustration boils into anger which might lead to violence. You wouldn't expect players to have to restrain coaches.

Who is the adult on the team?

It still amazes me the jerk was not fired. Pretty sad that Michigan wants someone like Howard to mentor young men.

Have grabbed him and called him a “jive turkey” but if you have even an ounce of class you handle it differently. Glad you had Bobby and we have Dabo to guide us on stuff like that.

I was wrong I would have bet he would have been fired. He will mess up again unfortunately. It’s tough but you have to find it in yourself to walk away. Does not make you weak but smart imo.

Feb 27, 2022, 3:34 PM

Except he attempted to walk away and ignore the situation, the Wisconsin coach grabbed his hands and stepped in his way. Doesn’t excuse his later reaction, but he still tried to walk away initially. I don’t know about anyone else but it would be a bad idea for any grown man to grab any part of me and impede my path. Especially if I’m already angry. If I swing first, I should be held accountable for my actions. That doesn’t mean another man was right to put his hands on me.

I’m not arguing he’s a good coach or person. I don’t know the man and I honestly don’t care, but let’s not place all of the blame on him for this scenario. All of the coaches were in the wrong here.

This highlights a cultural divide in America.

Feb 27, 2022, 3:22 PM

There is one part of America, of which I'm part, that sees Howard's behavior as totally inexcusable, with no mitigating factors that make it acceptable or understandable on any level. Period. Nothing that happened that day in any way justified his taking a swing at (physically attacking) another person. We realize that this kind of angry, violent outburst has no place in a civilized society, especially by men who are supposed to be setting an example for young, impressionable young men. Case closed.

Then there are those who seem to think that if a man "puts his hands on" another man, a physical assault is not only understandable, but highly recommended. It seems to be some kind of code of manhood based on some juvenile, comic book macho mindset, that in some circles, males never grow out of. It seems to me that this is a teaching moment, and those in positions of responsibility and influence (like Juwan Howard himself) need to emphasize that this kind of thinking is bullshot, that it is childlike and dangerous, and will not be tolerated, and if you think this way, you are a cottam idiot and need to shut up.

I've got grandkids boys and girls. How am I supposed to help teach them right from wrong if you've got adults acting that way. I've coached many youth sports in my day and even had an adult come on the court and go to his back pocket (as if he was going to pull a knife) at a 10 and under bb game because he didn't like a call. No rational thinking person is saying that it’s ok he reacted by swinging at the end. The argument is that there is plenty of blame to go around to ALL of the coaches in this situation and people only want to see the retaliation. Placing all of the blame on one man in this particular situation is absurd. Let’s at least admit that there are more to blame for the situation escalating than just Howard.

I don't think the Wisc coach was wrong at all for

Feb 27, 2022, 3:55 PM

grabbing Howard's arm to try to explain why he called the timeout. He and Howard were friends, so it wasn't like he was grabbing some stranger on the street, and coaches always speak after the game. Howard, who was already fuming, immediately responded by grabbing Gard's collar in the classic bully collar grab before releasing it a second or two later and pointing his finger in his face. Howard was wrong to be mad in the first place over the time out, he was wrong to be mad over the arm grab and attempt to explain, and he was wrong to take a swing at the other coach. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Everything every other coach did was in response to Howards angry, wrong behavior.

Feb 28, 2022, 8:49 AM

Agreed - the Wisconsin coach did not grab a handful of shirt and jerk him around or anything... it was more of placing his hand on someone to say "hey, let's stop and talk about this misunderstanding." It is certainly easy to misinterpret things though, especially when you are already angry.

so many cities in America seem to have a shoot first think after mentality among many. I swear it seems there is more of that now than maybe in the old west like Dodge City when everyone carried a gun and people were much less sophisticated than today. Sad to see the societal changes in that regard.

Re: This highlights a cultural divide in America.

Feb 27, 2022, 4:50 PM

Well, in most of those cities, guns are extremely highly regulated. In many other areas of the country, where guns are more freely available, the wild west mentality of shooting people doesn't seem to be anywhere near as prevalent as those heavily-regulated urban centers.

If only we could identify what it is about those areas that sets them apart from the rest of the country...perhaps the local government structure or something...

If I were out to dinner or something and a man called me a jive turkey and pit his hands on me he would catch these hands all day long until he went to sleep.

If I were at work and a client called me a jive turkey and blocked my movement I’d be cordial and then make it know I wasn’t dealing with them again. You have to know where you are. Can’t be doing that at work, even if someone calls you a jive turkey and lays hands on you.

It seems as if most everybody is caught up in the jive turkey issue- We all know that we have been called worse and just walked away- because it was not worth the time or the effort- to whip somebody's a**.
Body can grab me and touch me and as long as I do not feel threatened- I will walk away and people can think of me what they want. Just the way I was brought up. I was also brought up once that man punched- better yet sucker punched me or beach slapped me- I was taught to have zero mercy- I either whipped or got whipped.

The only way that he would be justified- would for the other coach to have grabbed one of his players-- than would be like some stranger grabbing one of my kids! He was acting like a little punk Bit*h

Dude is a hothead and unprofessional. Go figure with his past history. This isn't his first time physically going after another coach and it's time he was shown the door. Even Michigan alums are over him. Rich Eisen certainly let him have it. Funny, who would have ever thought Harbaugh wasn't the biggest jerk in their athletic department?
