A Texan's take

Nov 21, 2021, 12:25 PM

For years I've read this board without jumping in. Figured it's time.

I'm the product of a Texas school so cannot claim Clemson insider's status.

Married a Carolina girl (which proves I have good taste/judgement) whose late granddaddy was Clemson '39 and whose large family are mostly Tigers. CU didn't offer her program so she went elsewhere (not UofSC, for the record) to get edumacated.

In other words, she was born a Tiger if not necessarily diploma'd that way. As for me, if I may speak in biblical terms without crossing lines, I'm a Gentile who, though I did nothing to earn it, relishes his status as a member of the Clemson family.

So I hope you'll welcome me while at the same time being merciful of my fanboy take which is:

Clemson athletics is a special thing. Clemson, overall, is a special place. Clemson fans, for the most part, are dialed right in and tend to know their stuff. They're also friendly. The only friendlier fans I've come across are Aggies.

Never understood the UofSC situation and I've tried. The cock-a-doodle-doo thing, for a Texan raised with Longhorns and Aggies and Sooners and Bears and so on, is hard to get behind.

Never been to a game down there but it seems it'd be an unpleasant (if not physically unsafe) experience.

Also, Williams-Brice looks less like a football stadium and more like a staging area for the Natty Guard.

So, yeah ... UofSC just can't really draw folks like me in.

To the football thing: Clemson fans have a reason to be a little disgruntled this year but as a long-suffering fan of a middling BXII program, count your blessings, too. It's been — and I think will continue to be — a pretty good thing to be a Tiger fan. Exhibit A: Clemson proved yesterday they're still the class of the ACC even with all the poor play and injuries. What a demoralizing loss for the Deacs.

DJ, with hard work, may never be a reason they win a lot of games; however, he can be a reason they don't lose some of them.

He is stressful to watch and as a Texan, a phrase comes to mind: "All hat, no cattle." Time will tell if that's the case with Mr. Number 5. Otherwise, I do not know enough about football to pick apart coaching/scheming. So that's where my analysis ends.

Happy Thanksgiving. Sic 'Em Bears. Go Tigers. Beat the Cacks. Future posts will not be this long-winded.

Unfortunately, you might trigger some folks on here by referring in any way to DJ’s attire, and in particular The Hat.

It's been appropriated a little by some of the Alt-Righters but, for the average, reasonable, level-headed Texan, it just means it's okay to show a little backbone every now and again.

Thanks. I guess I shouldn't say the flag has been appropriated by some of the fringe. I don't know that for a fact. I do know in these times, it'd be a candidate for such a use.

Howdy neighbor! Nice to have you join us. I lived in Waco for a while and got my turf degree from T.S.T.C., then did my internship at Barton Creek C.C. in Austin. Have many good memories from those days and while I've always been a Clemson Tiger, I pulled for the Bears when I was out there. Grant Teaff was the HC and he was a good one.

Interesting story of the cannon...thanks for sharing. I hope you'll have many more fond memories here too! Clemson is like nowhere else and you know it's much more than the place and the people; it's a good spirit, goodwill, the love of Jesus, appreciation of life & God's blessings, and being a part of something bigger.
Welcome to the Clemson fambly....pardner! ;)

Thank you! Texas in some good (and very obviously bad) ways was shaped by the men and women of South Carolina. A good number of the men who fought/died in the Texas Revolution were South Carolinians. A couple of them - Bonham and Travis - were from down around Saluda County.

One entire branch of my wife's family is Texan. Meanwhile, I've got great-great-greats who lived/died in the mountain regions of Western NC.

So we make a good pair. One thing we've learned in our time together: never judge a book by its cover; folks tend to treat you the way you treat them, no matter where they're from.

All over, really. My folks are deep East Texans for whom the oil business was a way to build a little wealth. Their folks lost it all in the Depression. As a result, family was a religion and 42 (dominoes) a sacrament. Football, of course, was usually on in the background.

You know how to make a statement for a new man in town! And you've made some great friends including LBB and Clemgal in a hurry like a fairly dangerous man.

I'm a 1984 alum and transplant from southeast VA who fell in love with Clemson upon arrival to campus in 1979. I'm married to an agnostic Dawg, and we live in Savannah, GA - not a bad place to be. Big fan of NC from the mountains to the Outer Banks.

That said, my Clemson and VA friends can agree if we left the Southeast that Texas would be the preferred landing spot on our list. I can only hope the best parts of Texas are not lost for good in the upcoming years and decades. I know from experience, Austin was a blast in the 90's and early 00's.

Anyway, welcome and all the best ...

Welcome. Your only mistake was when you said you didn't know enough about football to pick apart coaching/scheme. Everyone knows that Tnet is populated with Vince Lombardis and Bill Walshes; if our coaching staff knew half as much about football as Tnet we woulda won every game this season by 35.

LOL - I guess it's the divine right of fans to vent spleen every now and again. Having played a little bit of football (and that not very well), all I know is never let the receiver get behind you (lest you get burned), never lead with the top of your helmet (lest you break your neck), watch the runner's belt not his legs (lest you get juked) and finally, speed kills.

The rest is well beyond my ability to pick apart.

I think Venables is Omar Bradley to Dabo's Eisenhower. Elliott is ... neither here nor there. But it's the lot of Offensive Coordinators to get skewered when things go south.

And Skalski looks like Erroll from ###### ... which is streaming on Prime, btw.

Expect to get the usual posts about you being a coot or a master troller. But, after a few weeks this board will accept you graciously. Great bunch of guys. I'm an FSU fan. But, now I am posting more on this board than on my Nole board. The discussions here are great. You will enjoy if you hang around. Welcome.

Samuel Maverick was from Pendleton and another South Carolinian who was involved in the Texas Revolution. He was not a defender at the Alamo and was not as famous for the revolution. After the independence, he refused to brand his cattle as other ranchers did, and his name became famous as one who didn't conform to the norm.
