A "Tactical Benching" may be in order!

Sep 19, 2021, 12:36 AM

I like the idea of benching DJU - with the idea being to settle him down!

I've seen Coach Swinney say, "you are always evaluated in practice and in games and whoever performs and moves the team will get the most reps"! We have won our last two games; but should have. The offense has not looked sharp at all.
It starts at the QB spot. DJU to me was focused on being a good college QB last year! Now he is focused on being a NIL recipient, starting QB of a top 10 team and he's not handling it well.
If Taisun or Hunter Helms or heck even Will Taylor can provide this offense with a spark then I think you go with them!
It would have to be communicated will with DJU that it isn't permanent. "Unless Taisun and company can actually move the offense better"!
I think it could send a message to the entire offense that if "DJU can be benched they all can"! Perhaps it will ramp up the intensity and focus!

Don't think that will ever happen. Dabo seldom changes QB's. My fear is that after watching film of this game, teams will stack the box against us to stop the run forcing us to pass. That's a scary thought. Elliot will probably not have us prepared for that.

When Chad Morris was here Coach Elliott and Coach Scott's job was to "game plan"! Who is doing that now?
We went through a streak where points were put up but we couldn't beat more physical teams. Which got us hardened to where we became a lot tougher and stronger on the OL. This OL group isn't moving the line of scrimmage.
From a play callers stand-point there is nothing to adjust to if you simply can't move the man in front of you. If the defense in in your QB's face - he won't be accurate. If he is on his back - all that speed at WR does you no good.
You can have the Bama OC here and it wouldn't make a difference. Football starts in the trenches just like it has since the begining! You see the fancy "modern offense" but, "it's still blocking and tackling and executing"!
We aren't blocking at a high level. The WR's are dropping passes!

All that said: The QB is the player the other players on offense will look to "in order to rally the offense"! Had I seen in any of these games that "desperate fight" in DJU I wouldn't say do a tactical benching! Right now, he isn't moving the team so someone else needs a chance to do it.

Coach Streeter needs to get some of the "credit" here too!

DJ needs to play better, but I hope our best coaching isn't to bench him

GT dropped 8 the whole game so we had to run. So you’re wrong

No. I don't think so.
Our offense puts a lot on the QB to read and react to. If they were dropping 8 then that leaves 3 in the box, right? The play is to audible to a run play or to just give it if a run was called anyway.

The QB's job in the Clemson offense is to put the offense in the best "numbers game opportunity" as possible. Are you seeing that?

Sure, a few of the receivers have dropped some catchable passes! The OL hasn't been more physical as evident by the fact you just said, "we should have been 5 yards a pop if they were dropping 8"! But, we were not.

Again, it's not just for DJU(benching). It's a message to the entire offense to tighten up!

IMO, DJ needs to see Puma early and in meaningful series.

He seems to me trying to be THE difference maker. I think he cares too much and needs to see the back up be successful. Look at Trevor post that Syracuse Game. IMO, confidence in the Puma and DJ plays loose and free

Puma really hasn't been successful in mop-up duty during his career

Exactly, he needs to be used earlier, with 1st team OL and Skill, to build both his own and the team’s confidence.

I haven’t seen anything from TP that makes me feel in better hands than DJ.

I haven’t seen the Puma with 1st team OL and Skill yet, I can’t say that.

My complaint is why with the ball on the two and only needing to go down with the ball The snap should directly under center. Instead we take a penalty and then hike the ball into the end zone. If DJ5 cannot take a direct snap, put in a QB that can and have our linemen fire out low. If they cannot drive block one yard in this situation, this is going to be a long year. By the way, DJ5 is thinking to much and thus holding the ball too long.

We are using Will Taylor a little, but as I've been saying I'd do it more for a change of pace and to allow DJ to take a breath. Another traditional QB could play now and then too without undermining DJ's confidence. Results would guide where we go from there.

Exactly! Nobody wants to call out our QB Coach; instead, everyone wants to promote him to OC! If you are the person most responsible for "one of" the biggest areas of concern on the offense and aren't "seemingly" making any adjustments; why would you want that?
I said, "seemingly" because DJU seems to still be as you said, thinking too much and holding on to the ball too long.
Are the WR's getting separation?
Playcalling admittedly could limit exposing areas of weakness! But, eventually, a good team will make you run those plays you aren't good at..
