A prayer request for myself. Please remember your blessings

Oct 8, 2013, 5:41 PM

You may remember a couple of other prayer requests I have posted. Just a little summary of my situation. I had a back surgery in 2008 where the surgeon fused my L5-S1. Just 3 months after the surgery the fusion completely broke. Instead of going right back in and fixing it, my doctor chose to go the conservative route. I worse a none growth stimulator 2 times a day for right at 13 months. I essentially walked around with a broken back the entire time. Any time I had to sneeze or cough hard I would fall to the ground if standing and it would take 2 people to get me up or onto a chair. During this time my wife was pregnant and had our first child together. I obviously was out of work and she was as well during maternity leave. Our life was very difficult to say the least as we lost basically everything we had. In January 2010 I had my 2nd surgery to correct the break and they went in through the front. That September I took a newspaper route 7 days a week. It was hard. My back killed me. I ran my car in the ground piling papers in my car and having to get break jobs every 2-3 months. At this time I ran the 7 day a week route, went to 4 classes at Greenville tech and kept our baby at home during the day. Sleep was hard to come by.

Fast forward to May 2013. I have been working for a reputable company making an honest, modest living. Have been there for about 18 months. I was in my lunch break and I was sitting at a red light. I got rear-ended by a car. I got a severe case of whiplash. It cause pain down my arms and a cold water sensation going down my upper back. The pain in my lower back was bad again and has slowly increased as time went by. I had to go on STD as I could not sit at my job because of the pain. I've been back at work since July. During all of the doctor's appointments and days where I was incapacitated I used basically all of my sick days, vacation, and personal time.

Right now I am on intermittent FMLA because there are so many days I wake up that I cannot go to work-not just because of pain, but because I physically cannot stand due to muscle weakness. When I stand to brush my teeth my legs shake due to weakness and the pain in my back is unbearable. Now I'm sitting here with no time to take off as it has all been used due to the accident. My surgeon believes that a screw in the hardware in my back has loosened. That screw is rubbing up against nerves and causing server pain. He believes that the joint has also softened (whatever that means). He said that he would have to go in and tighten the screw and possibly go up one more level and fuse it as well. This will cause about 7-9 more % disability and range of motion.

Obviously as I wait for a definitive answer of when and if the surgery will be, my pay checks are suffering so bad. I can't go back out on 100% STD until I've been back at work for 13 weeks which is next Monday, but I also can't go out until my doctor outs me out or I have the surgery.

As I lay here on my couch, I feel so many emotions. I feel irresponsible. I feel bitter. I feel sad and depressed. I feel anxiety over not being able to afford my bills with my paycheck being $200-300 less than they used to be. I don't want to lose everything again. I've had to sit in bankruptcy court and feel the shame just because I couldn't work for almost 3 years. The positive feeling that I feel is that through it all- my wife loves me and stands by me. I know that I swallowed my pride and ran a paper route as a 36 year old man. I worked as an after school counselor making minimum wage just to bring in a little bit of money.

I have to wear a pain patch, take 2 different pain medications orally, another medication for neuropathic pain, a medication for the anxiety due to the pain, a muscle relaxer, and a couple others. Even with this much medication I still sit at my desk at work with tears rolling down my face. It has been so hard. I hope that if surgery is the option needed that we can get it done quickly and that it will be a success.

I ask for your prayers for relief of my pain. I also ask for prayers for a financial miracle. I'm tired of the pain. I'm tired of knowing that at 38 I cannot get in the floor and play with with my daughter without pain. Any prayers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and please forgive errors grammatically.

Thank you

Thinking of YOU...for physical & mental relief, and glad You

Oct 8, 2013, 6:00 PM

are able to express your pain & sadness & disappointment to others that truly care, which I think TigerNet members would qualify for the most part.

I can't imagine all the constant pain you have & are experiencing..except I herniated a disc at age 35 (which bothers me still at 72)..and have a sister-in-law who was rear-ended too by a car, and had to retire at age 42 due to persistent back pain with no real help from her doctors..and hooked on meds.

You have been dealt a bad hand my Clemson Friend..but glad you haven't given up and are still reaching out for other's prayers, encouragement, sharing, hope and maybe even ideas..which you have in me! And, let me know if I may be of additional encouragement or help through T-mail.

GoTiGERs!

I have an attorney. My attorney is working on some things. I wasn't going to get an attorney until the adjuster for the insurance company told me she wasn't guaranteeing payment for medical bills. When she told me that I had no choice really.

It's none of my business really but your story My brother had a fusion slip apart and a piece of the bone fragment made contact with his spinal cord (that's all it takes!). They took a conservative approach with him too (to cover their ###) and it was the wrong course of treatment and didn't work. Then he also had a car accident (rear ended). He did not sue for malpractice because he's a passive individual. Now he's paying the physical price. He did litigate successfully over the car wreck though. Take no prisoners and best of luck!!

I will pray for you every day. Keep the faith and let us know how you are doing. Please tell us what town you live in, what you did and now would do for a living and let me see if we can help you. I've got a couple of ideas but this forum is not the place to bring them up. God Bless you and your family my friend!

Re: A prayer request for myself. Please remember your blessings

Oct 8, 2013, 9:47 PM

Everyone, like I said, thanks for the prayers and very, very kind words. It does take a lot to open up and tell what we are dealing with.

I do have an attorney. However, because I already have had 2 back surgeries, their attorney is trying to say that is the reason I'm in pain. My attorney told them that I didn't ask to be hit and that once the driver hit me, they have to take me as I am and that since my spine is already weak, I cannot take a hit at 10-15 MPH like someone with a strong spine can. In the end they will have to pay me for lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. The problem is I have needs now and the money that will eventually be paid is needed now. When you lose this much time from work it takes a toll on you. Thank God my employer is working with me and being more than understandable. If I had not the issues over the past few years I might could have built up some money that would help me get by right now. It just stinks that because the driver hit me I am in more pain and now missing work and using all of my PTO for this. You know, I've had chronic pain since about 2007, but this wreck has taken it to another level. I play drums for church and it hurts me so bad I'm not even able to do that. I am experiencing 24/7 pain. I wake up at least 5 times a night in pain. I also almost fall asleep at work when I do go in.

I hate to sound like I'm just complaining. I guess it just helps to vent. My happiest times right now are when I'm at church and when I'm sitting and watching my Tigers.

Quick story for you. My daughter's birthday wasn't long ago. I wanted to take her to her first Clemson game which happened to be the SC State game. Someone on here who shall remain nameless read my post asking about handicap parking and me talking about being able to get to the stadium and my seat. They ended up giving me their tickets for the game because they saw me trying to do something nice for my daughter even though I would be in pain. It was a success. However, by the 2nd quarter I found myself having to move a lot and just couldn't stay still. I paid for it for about a week after the game. It kills me that I'm 38 and cannot sit through a game without almost being in tears. That is horrible.

Anyway, that you all. I know that God will supply my needs.

P.S.- Let's go beat BC and then turn our attention to the Noles!

God bless my Clemson family

To the poster above, I was a little confused my your post. It is a lot easier to post while laying on the couch than it is to stand and lean over to brush my teeth. If you've never had back problems it is hard to understand how severe it can be. I pray you never have to find out.
