A path to relevancy

Jul 1, 2022, 10:46 AM

Being a huge follower of college football and a Phoenix resident and ASU booster I offer this for consideration.
Eitther the ACC or Big 12, not both, will emerge as the 3rd football super conference, ie 20 members. These entities will be football focused only. Basketball can standalone as will Olympic sports.
Washington and Oregon today applied to join Big 12 so the early momentum favors that middle America conference becoming the nationwide bridge to compete versus SEC/Big10.
ACC remains stagnant due to Rights lock up and seem unable to offer a viable option.
Thus, I think both AZ schools plus Utah and Colorado will gravitate to Big 12.
The missing piece(s) must come from ACC runaways, Clemson, FSU. Their departure into the 3rd powerhouse can be financed thru leveraging forward TV revenues to pay ACC separation fees.
The beauty of 3 is it can allow all three major media empires to each have "their" conference. ESPN, NBC and Fox have quality, high visibility games/product and the 60 serious players all find homes.
The playoffs will become a 12 team scramble, 4 from each super, and the rivalries and $$ will be huge.
The only unknown for me is Notre Dame but my bet is as this solidifies they go with Big.

Thats the least attractive outcome for Clemson IMO***

if I an tracking, you suggest a "middle america" conference will be established that bridges the gap, geographically, between SEC and Big. Also the We and FSU will be among the schools represented in the conf. So what other schools eould be included among the other 18?

Pretty well thought out post for a P-HOEnix resident

Jul 1, 2022, 11:00 AM

and admitted ASU booster. I was only ever in Phoenix once in my life, it was 127 degrees one day, and 126 degrees the next day! You all's brains have GOT to be scrambled eggs in that kind of heat, I don't give a rats hind end if it IS a "dry" heat. (I kid, welcome to the zoo.) I was gasping for air like a fish out of water anytime I was outside. And yet, 30 miles away on that same day that Phoenix was 126, Williams, Arizona at the mouth of the Grand Canyon was a balmy 88 degrees. Just ridiculous!

Even though what you say might make some kind of sense from the purely financial aspect of things, getting into a league where near cross country travel is a regular season normal is just too depressing to contemplate. Not to mention, there just is absolutely no history of any sort of rivalries there, nor would there ever be, since that kind of super conference would necessitate that it take several years to work your way through to playing every team.

It does make sense for whatever remnants of the Pac 12, and the Big 12 to merge, just from a geographic standpoint if nothing else. What DOESN'T make sense, now, is the Big 12 taking all these future members from the eastern part of the country. That just brings in all the horrors I described in the middle of my reply. Maybe you all could say "Excuse me, our bad, we no longer want you guys."

As do most intelligent Phoenicians we enjoy a 2nd home, two hours north and 2000 feet higher in the aptly named hamlet of Happy Jack, Arizona.
My thoughts granted do not solve all issues but travel is not a huge concern. If the 3 supers play a 12 game schedule, no cup cakes allowed, then 6 away games of which only 2 maybe 3 each season might involve some long distance travel.
The harsh reality is that we as fans" have no voice in how this evolves. We are now media product consumers only and decisions rest solely in the board rooms of Walt Disney Company, Comcast and the Murdoch family.
Buckle up, enjoy the ride and just hope your team is not left out.
We Sun Devils hate UoA passionately but still hope they tag along to sustain the good old rivalry.
