A lot of today’s Clemson fans

Oct 6, 2022, 4:18 PM

Are far to young to remember the Tigers longest road trips. It has been discussed previously on tnet but are you old enough to remember the Tigers conference games in the ORIENT?

I CONFESS I MISSED THOSE TWO GAMES,

Yes, I remember lying in bed listening to the game on

my Sony Walkman radio ... seriously.

As avid a fan as I claim to be I don’t really remember hearing these games. Perhaps here in the NC mountains they weren’t broadcast but they should have been because both awake and Duke were the opponents.

I was listening to the Duke game in Tokyo.***

Remember them both very well. I was a Sophomore at Clemson in 1982 I think... It's hard to know because I dropped so many classes along the way.
Go Tigers!!!

198?

Actually, it was Wake and Duke.

Oct 6, 2022, 4:39 PM

Clemson played in the Mirage Bowl twice. In 1982 against Wake Forest and again in 1991 against Duke.

They only took the girls. Still salty about that to this day!

I thought male cheerleaders were used to getting the shaft.

But - I'm very classy - so I would never say that.

All in good fun.

I mean that would only be fair and all.

Being a male Cheerleader then was different.

Oct 6, 2022, 4:41 PM

All of our squad was over 6 feet tall and over 200 lb except me. When we went arrived at the hotels for away games with our Clemson gear most thought we were on the FB team. When we said no we are the Cheerleaders, they usually said if yall are the cheerleaders, I'd hate to see the FB team.

I get that I threw yall a softball with that comment about getting shaft though.

About that, they took the Rally Cats and all the female cheerleaders but left us behind! I'm still pissed about it!

I remember very vividly the two games listened to both on the radio. Not sure of the year but it was early 60’s The tigers played in theTobacco Bowl and the Oyster Bowl early in the season against Duke and I think UVA. One game was in the Richmond area and the other was near the NC coast.

We played the College of the Pacific at least once back in the "fifties". The trip to Stockton, CA was the longest trip ever by a Clemson football team at that time. I can't imagine why Coach Howard scheduled such a trip. Anyone?
