a few numbers that affect the incidence of mass shootings

52.9 million people have mental illnesses. We're leaving aside the alchohol and drug incidents, which probably account for more than a few.
Gun ownership estimates around 400 million guns in circulation in the US. That's about 120.5 guns per 100 residents.
If one in five adults are mentally ill and there 120 guns per 100 residents, it's pretty obvious....... we don't have nearly enough bullet proof vests.

More numbers.
165 million Americans are liberals, yet still use fossil fuels.

agree, mental illness is a big problem. Combine that with all the negativity out there that is easily ingested and it is a problem.

so if mental illness is a big problem, how do you suppose we can stop these mass shootings?
I'm scared to even go into a store anymore.

lol, I couldn't tell you the first thing about guns. Never ever owned one and haven't fired one in 25 years. If I had to use one, I'd probably be as much of a danger to myself and those around me as any crazed gunmen.
For some reason, I've never had any interest in them, just never felt the overwhelming sense of insecurity and paranoia to desire a gun for self-protection. And miraculously, I've survived a pretty long time while living and working in many not so nice places for the last forty years.
If I ever become so insecure in my environment where I ultimately decide packing some heat is the best option, that's when you will truly know the #### has hit the fan.

the Shiite has hit the fan.
I'm comfortable using shotguns - but hand guns, no way.

I'm kinda the same.
I've fired most everything, but I still really don't like handguns much and while I have one I'd always reach for the shotgun first...you don't need much more than a near-miss with it - which when an intruder might be breaking in, in the middle of the night, is going to be important since you're probably not going to be Annie Oakley at 3AM in a dark house - and you're also not going to shoot through the wall and kill a family member or some poor sod in the house next door.
For home defense, shotguns are kinda the only choice, to me.

Anyone got a breakdown re: 'regular' mental illness vis-a-vis 'drug related' mental illness?
Just asking ... not going to look it up myself.
Thanks.

shootings that made headlines often have victims who their families say was "mentally ill". I've often thought "it sounds like that guy was on drugs"...
