A few facts on CFP, and a couple of comments

Dec 22, 2020, 1:55 PM

This is the 7th year of the CFP. Out of 28 spots, the SEC and ACC have taken 16 (8 each), B10 5, B12 4, PAC 2, and independent 1.

Clemson and Alabama each have 6 appearances, followed by Oklahoma and Ohio State with 4 each, Notre Dame with 2, and a bunch with 1.

Of the 6 finals, 5 of them have been won by the SEC or ACC - Clemson and Bama with 2 each, LSU with one. These were the past 5 championships, and an ACC or SEC champion this year is highly likely...an ACC-SEC final quite possible.

Now you see why everyone is complaining about the CFP? Nearly 60% of participants and more than 80% of champions have come from the deep South.

For those saying we should have stuck with the BCS, 4 of the 12 teams who have played in a CFP final were 3 and 4 seeds - and two of the champions were 4 seeds (that one-third). One year the 4 seed beat the 3 seed in the final! To say that the BCS would have produced the same champions is a crock.

The system is not perfect, but for those who complain about it, you can make it better...by getting BETTER!

I personally think 4 is plenty but no more than 8. The first game of the 8 should be a home game for the top 4 seeds.

Clemson should be a 1 seed every year if they finished 1st the previous year & have 1 or less losses.

Bucknuts should have to play 11 games to qualify for the last seed.

Clemson gets the option of playing The bucknuts if they qualify. (Easy start)

Once expansion begins, it will very likely continue; w/ a probable cap at 24. Anything over 4 teams will only introduce more variables, that are adverse to ideal playing conditions. It will also add weight to similar variables, that already exist, such as attrition(injury).

There is no excuse not to go to at least 6, or 8 max.

It's pretty ridiculous to have five P5 conferences, but only 4 spots. Each conference should have a representative. Except that I'm not crazy about byes, six would probably be ideal...five conference champs and the top G5 conference champ. If you don't win your conference, why should you be eligible for a playoff? You have already proved you aren't the best in your conference, so why should you get a 2nd chance?

And this would only increase the interest in the regular season, not reduce it. It would greatly increase the interest in the conference championship games, because the winner is quaranteed a spot in the playoff.

Why insure every P5 conference a slot, you may ask? That is the only way to keep the whole country interested, and not just a couple regions.

It is supposed to be a NATIONAL championship. After 6 years, we see the natural result of omitting the Pac12 the last few: there comes a natural ebb in supporting those programs.

The longterm health of college football requires it to be a national sport.

Otherwise those Pac12 schools are going to turn their Med schools loose on us, and tell us how much safer Team Skateboarding is, and how we're compelling underprivileged youth to concuss themselves for our white privileged excitement.

Jim Harbaugh's 11 team playoff structure proposal is something I can get behind.

Calls to eliminate CCGs and have conference champion decided by regular season with tiebreakers if necessary. P5 conference champions receive auto-bid. Use BCS rankings to seed playoff and remaining 6 teams. Round 1 is bottom 6 teams. Winners get placed in 8 team playoff. Losers still get a bowl game. Top 5 seeded teams get rewarded with first round bye.

11 teams would assuredly give an opportunity to top G5 team(s). It also preserves the value of bowl season since top 8 are only teams in the playoff. I don't think the national champion has been incorrect the last 6 years of the CFP, but the parity of college football is worse than ever. I think this would allow us to expand the playoff but preserve bowl season.
