A 10

Mar 1, 2022, 8:47 AM
a10.png(37.1 K)

Every time I see those satellite images of the huge Russian convoy moving on Kyiv I just wish some A10s would open up with their 20 mm cannon (with depleted uranium tipped rounds) on those SOBs and turn them into a heap of flaming junk.

For you youngsters, A10s were the tank busters, close air support planes of the Cold War era, into Desert Storm, etc.

Many of us old timers remember seeing them fly down the coast of the Grand Strand from the now closed Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, which was home to A 10 fighter wings. After MYB closed some went to Shaw for awhile.

The thing about Russia attacking Ukraine is that, a large portion of the Russian military don't want to be there killing innocent people that they know hasn't caused them any harm what so ever. That is the absolute worst part about being in the military, and that is when you're ordered to kill harmless men, women, and children like the Russian solders are being ordered to do. And when the citizens take up weapons to defend what is theirs, then a solder is forced to do what he hates having to do just to protect himself. It becomes a double edged sword!!!

As an Armored Cav man, I can vouch firsthand to the utter devastation an A10 can bring. Most impressive display of firepower that I saw during my time in Germany was 2, A10’s light up a mountainside range. They basically made the mountain disappear in a cloud of dust……in about 3 seconds. Unbelievable firepower.

I feel you Gumby. I was Field Artillery Officer and we would do a CALFX at Fort Sill every year for NATO partners/dignitaries etc. and it was insane. Things started off with a B1 bombing run, massive artillery barrage, flight of Apaches unleashing hellfire missiles, then the A10s would roll in with those 20mm cannons and I mean it felt like the Earth was about to come apart. All I could think was what in the hell would it feel like to be on the receiving end of that!!!!

Sadly you are correct. During Iraq invasion some of the A10 pilots couldn't tell the difference between an AAV and a BMP, nor what air panels were for. They hit our boys on several passes that day and it was ugly. Mistakes are made and war amplifies them at times. I have never been bitter about it, but it still sucked nonetheless. A10s are indeed very good at what they do.

It happens. I served in Germany with a Sargent that I admired very much. He was involved in FF event in the 1st Iraq War, destroyed a Bradley. Fog of war, things get moving fast, somebody’s in a place they’re not supposed to be and crewmen are making split second decisions that they think will preserve their buddy’s lives. Depleted Uranium and Heat rounds don’t do “do overs”.

Very true. When we use to provide marking rounds for them with our artillery, those SOBs come in literally almost touching the tops of trees, then do a quick climb and down like a diver bomber. They were basically like an attack helicopter....your only hope to survive was to hug the Earth and pray. Awesome!! I know like TigerSaul said F35, etc can fill the role now with greater speeds, etc but #### those A 10s sure do look good...getting off the bus and just intimidating.

Even in Vietnam when they had the F4 and other ground attack jet aircraft etc, they still used the Skyraider (propeller) plane that entered service in 1946 because, like the A10, it was so effect in close air support and could stay on station for longer periods of time.

Depleted Uranium rounds are devastating to armor

Mar 1, 2022, 1:19 PM

Years ago, I was visiting a "facility" in Barnwell shortly after they had received 5 Abrams tanks that were hit by so-called "friendly fire" in Iraq. The gun barrels were on the ground in one pile, the target acquisition pods were in another pile and the hulls were behind a wall out of public sight. It was an ugly, ugly thing to see, with the hulls completely blackened from burning. One hull was warped due to heat caused when a depleted uranium round penetrated the hull and lit off every round in the tank's ready rack. All of the hulls had 2' square sections cut out of the hull in order to decontaminate the steel and remove the radioactive portions where rounds penetrated. One hull had taken a round through the front near the driver's seat... the round went through 5" armor in front, then through the front 3" steel turret wall, out the rear 3" turret wall and lodged in the engine. Those rounds cause catastrophic damage to most anything that moves.

I don't know if those rounds were 20mm or 30mm and if they came from an A-10 or a ground weapon, but it gave me an idea of what modern ammunition can do.

Shortly after, I spoke with a couple of Army officers returning from Iraq and asked them about their experiences with depleted uranium rounds, since I had heard about the cancer-causing aspects of the rounds. One of the stories I heard was about the weird effects a round could have on targeted soldiers. They said they entered several armored vehicles after the turkey shoot of the Republican Guard column to see the effect of our depleted uranium ammo. In one tank that had been destroyed, the driver was sitting at his controls in his uniform appearing to be unharmed, but not moving. They touched his shoulder and he collapsed into a pile of dust, supposedly vaporized, but his shell left intact until they disturbed his shell.

I would not want to be on the receiving end of that firepower.

The EU is donating some fighter jets to Ukraine:

https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3415236-eu-to-provide-fighter-jets-to-ukraine.html

Hopefully they get them in time to use against the inbound Russian column of armor and fuel.... if so, it would make a huge difference. They need to find a way to stop that column and attack it.

If I had any influence over NATO, I would try to tie up the Russians in Ukraine enough to force Putin to send his entire force inside Ukraine. Once he was committed, I would immediately vote for Ukrainian membership in NATO and send the full force of NATO air power into Ukraine and annihilate the entire Russian force.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Depleted Uranium rounds are devastating to armor

Mar 1, 2022, 11:44 PM

As the DU round passes through the armor, it turns the steel it is passing through into molten steel. That molten steel then bounces all around inside the armored vehicle at close to the speed of sound….it’s not survivable.

I remember many a day out fishing a Pack's Landing and you always knew when one was coming- they would be head to the bombing range, just seeing that thing come in at tree top level was frighting- I can only imagine what it was like when they opened up with the guns! They could be shot to hell-o and still make it back to their base- I think the only other thing that may have been better was when a squad of B-52's

Mar 1, 2022, 1:43 PM

I have seen and been around a lot of military aircraft and to this day to me there is nothing like the take-off of a B-1. Those 4 jet engines are like 4 F16s on one plane and just make the earth tremble.

When we were involved with them in training exercises you never really saw or heard them until they dropped their flares. They have the radar profile of a bird and traveling faster than speed of sound there was no noise until bombs away. Amazing to see something so big going that fast !!!

One of my buddies is in the AF, sent me a pic of a B1 looking at him thru his review mirror, yeah that’s scary. Lol I got an app called RadarBox, you can find most planes in the sky. Funny a C-130 shows up like a Cessna shape wise at least. A NATO AWACS comes up as the same thing as a drone (military wise). Europe’s been fun to check out lately, US had a bunch of KC-35s and KC-10s rotating over Poland and Romania. Thought you might find that app interesting. I def do.

I know this may sound weird to say but I feel bad for some of them. While I do think a good portion of the Russian Army wants to fight and shed blood I don’t think all of them are this way. What I watched said some of the ones that were captured were conscripts that were forced to join. They we’re told by there leadership that they’re going on a training exercise, others said they were told that the country of Ukraine wanted and needed them. Putin is leading lambs to the slaughter with no remorse. They surrender cause they want nothing to do with this war. It very well could all be lies but I can’t help but wonder. Serving in Iraq and Afghanistan I understand people have to do whatever it take to make sure they and there families survive. I can’t imagine someone having that kind of power over me. I think the best we can hope for is the people of Russian finally over throw Putin. “Leaders” like that eventually make too many enemies and see there last sunset.
