55+ -- you can get high speed internet for $5-10.00 a month

Apr 25, 2018, 5:24 AM

according to where you live $5 or $10.00 a month. Same that others pay $50 for. Just call ATT. I have been using it for 2 years.

ATT high speed = dial up.

with this supposed "high speed" internet deal. I'm sure their cable TV is fine but their internet is trash. They throttle the speeds, which are slow to begin with, based on your bundle plan. Their internet also has a data cap unless you pay for one of their premium TV packages (which is absolutely absurd).

Never a problem with speeds,
But you are correct about regular ATT and UVerse; I have a friend that pays $125 a month and his internet is "ok, at best". He bit the bullet and admitted that he 62 and should take advantage of "old people's pricing".
For the 1st time in nearly a year, he has not came over to watch a Clemson game(FB, BB, BB on TV); after getting senior citizen ATT internet last Monday. Now he will not shut up about all the other games he gets and how he can use Roku to watch all things You Tube offers-- with his Sling account.
As with me, he never has connection problems anymore. Even with his wife streaming a movie in the other room.
**
If you live in an area that does NOT have the ATT lines underground, you will not get high speed Uverse internet until then. I know a few people that live in rural areas that still can not get high speed without having a satellite outside.
Until 2 years ago when I moved two blocks away, I could not even get ATT-UVerse internet or cable (no lines). I had and used DSL from ATT, because no new lines came down my street. And I have lived in the city of West Cootlumbia all along.

There are no monthly limits and while they say that I will get 500mps; I average around 750. A whole lot more than I need/want, but never have problems.

I think you can get up to 20mbs through the phone line

Which is doable. I wouldn't.

a customer of Mid-Carolina Electric Co-op or Newberry Co-op, they are installing high speed fiber in all their service areas. 100 Mb at $50 per month, 500 Mb and 1 Gb also available. Flat monthly rate, including all equipment and installation.

Sign up at carolinaconnect.com. If you have already signed up, you need to go back and set up your account, to get scheduled to be connected.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That installation is moving very S-L-O-W-L-Y

Apr 25, 2018, 9:23 AM

In some areas it will another year or more before they have service.

I am on the far western end of their service area, and will

Last year. I researched it and they apply data limits and throttle speeds.

the at&t guy came to my house, ran the lines, hooked up all the hardware and explained everything i ordered. was there for 3 hours. i may be old but i researched it pretty good. use to be on comporium. i have way more now than i need but it is what came with the package i got. looked at ps vue, almost went there but just thought uverse was the best deal overall. have had zero issues and so far am very pleased.

Apr 25, 2018, 2:45 PM [ in reply to While on the subject, if you are in SC midlands and ]

That is crazy! Some people waste too much money. Check all your options.
Rural areas may be stuck with less options, but I would get a satellite if I lived in countryside.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A satellite is more expensive and a tenth of the speed

Apr 25, 2018, 3:44 PM

That would be crazy, if you have fiber available. Satellite is a last resort, if you can't get anything better. So so speed, usage limits and $60 per month.

Is this program available for folks 55 or older? I thought it was for low income.

Re: 55+ -- you can get high speed internet for $5-10.00 a month

Apr 25, 2018, 3:19 PM

I am 61. Retired Coach/Teacher/Administrator, but qualify with what I get monthly. First year retired, so may have got because of the "public servant" discounts that are offered sometimes.
I saw the advertisement and called them right then and they installed next day. they never asked for my financial affairs/salary. They may have changed their policies in past year.
My friend that I mentioned previously, was a "salesman" and NG reserve. I have not asked "what all info that he had to give them".
The only thing that was in question was, if it would be $5 or $10 a month.

His wife might be more excited than him, she has all the movies and shows she has ever wanted.
Besides the games, my favorite daily ritual is to put in on You Tube and stream all the new Tigernet and other Tiger sports news and then watch the stories that caught my attention.
A dull Sunday afternoon, you will find me watching Clemson Football games from the 50s, 60s, or more recent years.
Compare a Big Thursday or old bowl game from 50s/60s to today's games/athletes; it is amazing how much better, faster teams are today.

Re: 55+ -- you can get high speed internet for $5-10.00 a month

Apr 25, 2018, 10:33 AM

This is only for low-income, not 55+. If you are on SNAP (food stamps), ATT (and Comcast) have a $10/month home internet service plan. It’s using their UVerse/DSL infrastructure, and does depend on where you live. They have a $10/month option for 10 Mbit downlink, or a $5/month option for either 3Mbit or 5Mbit depending on how close you live to their switching station.

This is barely enough for 1 HD Netflix stream, so it wouldn’t work if you stream your TV through your internet connection.

Re: 55+ -- you can get high speed internet for $5-10.00 a month

Apr 25, 2018, 3:38 PM

wow.
I have no problems ever. High speeds and never delays. Using Sling though. We have 2-4 devices using stream at same time, when home.
But I tried Netflix, it sucks. But they cut speeds to make you buy more, a recent Hulu convert tried to tell me.
Talked to ATT and a friend, we are getting because of educator discount. His wife is a Teacher.
BUT, this is not publicized and is only for k-12 educators.
Like the old days, ATT was charging me 22 cents a minute for long distance. I called them and told them I was changing to another carrier for 5 cents a minute. I started getting it for 4 cents a minute from them.
