4th-and-16: The play that changed a program and led to a National Championship

Fourth-and-16. Just say that to any Clemson fan, and a broad smile will quickly show itself. You don’t have to mention the game or the year or the final score. They know. Full Story »

I didn't realize the 49-7 since that game

Thanks again for making it, and sharing it with us. David Hood is right--it was the turning point.

Getting beat by Bama in 2008 is what did it IMO

Feb 7, 2017, 8:38 AM

We came into that game in the top 10, thinking we'd arrived with James Davis and CJ Spiller. Dreaming about division championships.

Alabama made it look like we didn't even belong on the same field and because of that game our fans went from thinking we'd arrived to realizing how far we had to go. Tommy Bowden's career ended a few games later and Dabo's started all as a result of that game.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Attended the 100th Clemson vs. USC game on a broken ankle from 8 hours earlier. Got a recliner in the endzone for the 100th game...it was worth it. Story in Profile.

Re: Getting beat by Bama in 2008 is what did it IMO

Feb 7, 2017, 9:58 AM

I think we now are who we are and what we are as a result of all those lessons we learned from every one of those situations. We have learned, and from those experiences we no expect to win. Period! End of story!!!

2008 Alabama Game was Misunderstood by All.

Feb 7, 2017, 2:30 PM [ in reply to Getting beat by Bama in 2008 is what did it IMO ]

You are correct... Alabama was thought of as a mid-tier team in the SEC that year and the announcer kept belittling Clemson because we were said to be top-tier ACC. I feel Tommy Bowen lost his job after that loss. BUT it turned out that Alabama was NOT mid-tier... they went on to be National Champs that same year. But Bowen was out and Swinney was in.

Re: Getting beat by Bama in 2008 is what did it IMO

Feb 7, 2017, 7:27 PM [ in reply to Getting beat by Bama in 2008 is what did it IMO ]

I agree that game was clearly a wake up call because Nick Saban and Alabama showed us, with the exception of C.J.Spiller ,that we did not have the physical toughness and mental toughness to compete against his teams. His Bama teams would go on to win 4 National Championships until we stopped him this year. It showed us we had a lot of work to do ...but also...that we didn't have a very good Offensive Coordinator.

Re: Wow - AH was wide-open on that play - I had never noticed

Feb 7, 2017, 12:13 PM

AH was wide open and if Nuk hadn't gotten to the spot clean, he probably would have checked down to him. Obviously Nuk was his first option and it was open so he threw it. Watson might could have turned it inside for the td against bama, but wisely threw a simple pass to a wide open renfrow for the win.

Goosebumps and Confetti All Over Again

Feb 7, 2017, 9:29 AM

Yes, I got goosebumps and that darn confetti in my eyes again. I have been truly in tears with Clemson excitement four times in my life. The 1981 Orange Bowl, the Chick Fil A Bowl, the Notre Dame rain game and the Natty last month. All but the first spectacular last minute finishes that epitomize the heart of The Tigers.

Interesting note - did anyone else catch the stat at the beginning of this clip? We were 13 of 15 on 4th down conversions, 1st in FBS. I guess we finished on top at 14 of 16!!!

Another amazing thing. For Taj to throw to the spot and for Nuke to get to the spot under that kind of pressure is amazing. Watch it. Nuk doesn't turn to the ball until the last moment. Amazing. Incredible.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!

Feb 7, 2017, 9:53 AM

That was part of the glue that cemented in this program's mind that we do belong at the top, and we can beat anybody, and it validates what Dabo has brought to our university. It just keeps on getting better!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

4th and 16 was the defining moment, but 2011 was HUGE...

Feb 7, 2017, 10:04 AM

2011: I don't know what you would call it, but the 3 game win streak against Auburn, FSU and @VT were super impressive and gave a young team confidence after coming off a shaky start against Troy and Wofford. Honestly, our program was at a crossroads. Coming off a 6-7 season, playing like poop against Wofford. Had we lost those 3 games against ranked opponents, Dabo wouldn't have survived the year.

That win streak would later pay off and help us claim our first ACC championship in 20 years. BIG first step for an evolving program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 4th and 16 was the defining moment, but 2011 was HUGE...

Feb 7, 2017, 10:28 AM

Got to give you props on this one because, like you said, without out it - 4th and 16 never happens. At least not with Dabo. Think someone posted earlier or below - all these defining moments brought this program where it is now.

However, the 4th & 16 game was a highly rated and anticipated game on the national stage. And the buildup to it was huge... I remember eSECpn touting it as a must watch game etc. believe it was the top rated bowl that year. So, in that respect was huge implications for the "(Paw) Brand".

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, that was the "FINALLY! WE ARE BACK!" moment for me.

Feb 7, 2017, 10:06 AM

Others may disagree, but, think of the probable direction of the program had that kick missed, or 4th and 16 fell incomplete. We may still have gotten to where we are now eventually, but I think it would have taken a few more years, maybe never. It was just meant to be.

You are surely on point there David, that was and amazing game, and Tajh took a H&ll of a beating in that game and just kept getting up and coming right back at that LSWho team. When Nuk caught that pass for the first down, I really felt at that moment this was our game, and that our guys was going to beat LSWho. For me, there were just as many tears at the end of that game as there were at the end of the NC game. Good story David, thanks!!!

Feb 7, 2017, 2:47 PM

I agree. This was a big turning point. There were still naysayers and doubters, but I think this game made believers out of the Clemson players. All I had wanted to do was to not get blown out by LSU. How sweet it was to finally win a big game in the final seconds. And that led us to the bigger win, in the final seconds, over The Tide. We are living the dream right now.

I ran screaming through the house! Jumping up & down like a kid!! My wife says that's the 2nd most excited she's ever seen me. The most was of course, Renfrows catch to win it all. Watching that video gave me cold chills. A program is built one player at a time. Dabo' first real brick was #10. Thank you, Boyd!!

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was definitely a huge play and one that will NEVER be

Feb 7, 2017, 3:02 PM

forgotten. But faith takes time to build, rather than a flash from a lightning bolt experience. (Correct me if I'm wrong, RevDodd) I started to believe again the year before. It was the Auburn game in the Valley, where there was "no better place for the streak to end." And then it was FSU and the Tigers overcame that awful pick-6. And then it was VaTek. All three of these teams were ranked, but the Tigers prevailed.

Sammy and Mike Bellamy both scored long TDs on their first college touches, and Martavis almost did.

That stretch, despite the bad bowl game, was what made me believe again.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

THAT WAS A DIME TB THREW!!

Feb 7, 2017, 4:07 PM

That was one of the best throws of Tajh Boyds career by far! An inch either way & it probably wouldnt have been caught. It reminds me of Watsons pass in GA game. I know that Boyd didnt have the career that DW had or beat the ##### but i really hope they retire his # eventually bc he is the reason we are what we are now. Forever grateful to TB!

Re: New Story: 4th-and-16: The play that changed a program and led to a National Championship

Feb 7, 2017, 7:14 PM

I agree that was a great play and a great win for Clemson . However, I believe the one action that set us on the path to our 2nd National Championship ,..was the hiring of Tommy Bowden. I know a lot of my fellow alumni and many fans will disagree ...but if you just remember one thing ...Tommy Bowden HIRED Dabo Swinney and brought him to Clemson. Coach Bowden also got our program going in the right direction with recruiting and facilities upgrades. Yes, he used to drive me crazy with his conservative game management and play calling but he also won some big games against FSU when they owned us after Danny Ford was forced out. Dabo deserves most of the credit but I think we should remember Head Coach Tommy Bowden for helping us get back to the TOP ,...a National Champioship. I also, believe that the signing of C.J. Spiller was a MAJOR event that brought us to where we are today.
