Worrying about consecutive early exits in the tournament is a problem we haven't faced here in over a decade. So I guess we're lucky?

Maybe they'll run him off at Rocky Top, and he can keep his orange wardrobe and come back here.

No I don't think most of them are taking him from granted. Just won their first SEC Tournament in over 40 years.

Barnes was a good coach but Purnell is the guy we didn’t appreciate.

Barnes took over a relatively healthy program, instilled toughness, and just beat teams up. It’s hard to win that way in today’s game.
OP put a brand on Clemson basketball. He made it cool. He took over a disaster of a program and steadily got better every year. Our administration just dropped the ball with him.

they needed to move so Rick would stop banging the young chick. But I mean Barnes couldn’t pass up the Texas job during that time. That was a smart career move.

Barnes' wife had a good plan, because there are no hot coeds in Austin at the University of Texas.

Clearly you have never been to a UT football game. Plenty of hot coeds at Texas.
Barnes sucks. I don't know why you'd want him back. He has good teams only to lose in the first or second round of the tourney every single season. He's way overrated.

OP is still trying to win ONE NCAA tournament game in his career .
Why the love of OP?
He played cupcakes in preseason to get ranked. He had .446 winning percentage in ACC vs. Brownell who is at .481 winning percentage.
Barnes is where Clemson lost a good one. Not Purnell. Shaka Smart was a possible other miss.
When Brownell goes or Is asked to leave, Clemson has to find a coach who wants to build at Clemson vs. launch from Clemson.
This school deserves a consistently stable and above average basketball program. Something it has never had and no previous Clemson coach has ever created.

OP stayed longer than Barnes. Both were great. Barnes only

won 2 NCAA tourney games. He lost to a pretty bad Western Michigan team his last game.
The program wasn’t bad when Barnes took over. OP took over a trainwreck and methodically built Clemson basketball and established a brand. Shayatt destroyed everything Barnes built.
Clemson hosted college gameday under OP. We made our first and only ACC Championship game.
Again, I think Barnes could’ve done good things, but he bolted. And who could blame him. It’s freaking Texas and Clemson did not have a strong ath dept and president at that time.
We could’ve kept OP, but we screwed it up. OP had very little support but still did darn good. Brownell doesn’t have excuses moving forward because Neff is a basketball guy.
But yes, I’d love to have Barnes back. But it ain’t happening.

Uhh...maybe I missed it when OP departed but last I checked OP left in the middle of the night without much sign of leaving beforehand.
Did he openly say that the main reason he left was facilities?
As some others have mentioned before, it seemed like things going on outside of marriage involving other ladies seemed to play a big part in the move.
Never really heard this presented before so just curious.
I'd disagree that both were great tho -- RB found success after leaving Clemson so I agree with that but OP did not and this was transitioning to a Bball centered school.

I think both were great by Clemson standards. Neither have been great by good basketball school standards. It certainly should have ended better in the case of Purnell. Him not ghosting and the support from the administration that he wanted.
Here's an OP interview after retirement where he talks about Clemson about 1:02:00. He mentions he wanted the facilities to catch up to what he had at Dayton and that was too slow among other factors in the move to DePaul. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJcwvCV4lDw
I think his tenure in particular points to the change in the baseline for Clemson basketball. He took a team that was as bad as it had been since the early '70's. In 4 years, he transformed the program into being as consistently good as we have ever been.

Agreed, why all the love with OP. So many games he was up by 20 to lose by 20. Free throw shooting was terrible. He had his gimmicky full court press that didn't work for a complete game. Barnes was solid.

I'm talking a brain dead moran. But, that doesn't matter, because I don't see Clemson giving enogh of a #### about basketball to hire and retain a coach of Barnes' stature and ability.

And Mike Young at Va Tech lost their NCAAT game, just like last year. So if they go for the third consecutive season, but lose will be 0-3. So according to your theory you go 0-3 you are not a good coach?
As said before NCAAT record is not the only way you judge a good coach, or not...

But I’m not sure at 68 years old, that Barnes would be interested in coaching at Clemson.

Barnes and OP were both very good. Did it in both different ways. Should never judge OP on his first three years digging it out of Shyatt...

I really think people don’t remember or understand how much harm Shyatt did to our program in such a short period of time. We were the equivalent of a team moving from D2 to D1 with what he did to our roster. What OP was able to do was nothing short of miraculous.

OP inherited UCLA under Wooden compared to what Barnes

started with. The best player Rick inherited, Devin Gray, had a heart attack then flunked out of school after 7 games. That left him with Merle Code, Bruce Martin, Rayfield Ragland, Bill Harder and Andy Kelly, the slab 5.
OP inherited Sharod Ford, Shawan Robinson, Chris Hobbs, Olu Babalola, Akin Akingbala, Chey Christie and Steve Allen.
Barnes had one guy over 6'6 on the roster, and he barely played, Ishan Scott

Barnes is terrible. Tennessee chokes every season in the tourney just like Texas did when he was there.
If you get rid of your current coach, you can do much better than Barnes. My goodness, watch some #### basketball sometime.
