What I have been hearing about Venables, Clemson Assts., Bates, etc.

Jan 4, 2022, 3:05 PM

First off, don't panic, change in college football is inevitable. Clemson was lucky to keep it's assistant coaching staff intact for as many seasons as it did.

What I have been hearing, and the rumblings, about Brent Venables was Brent wanted Wes Goodwin, since Wes was his asst and the scouting / film / defensive analyst, liason to NFL scouting, basically the information guy behind Venables, but Wes wanted to stay. Venables' next choice was safeties coach Mickey Conn, but Conn also wanted to stay.

Bates is a decent guy I guess, kind of new, but wasn't necessarily Brent Venable's first choice. Points of correction, Bates was the defensive tackles coach, not full defensive line coach nor nearly as experienced as Dan Brooks was (who was one of the best in the business), and was recently made the assistant to Dabo or "Asst. to Head Coach", not Assistant or Associate Head Coach from my understanding.
Bates was fairly recently named recruiting coordinator, but heard he was only responsible for one defensive recruit in the last cycle. Good personality, maybe a little hokey, but not necessarily all business.

The word I have mostly always heard for years, is recruiting is jointly shared by most of the coaches at Clemson, and it was Brandon Streeter who was the recruiting coordinator from 2015 to 2019, when Jeff (Scott) took over as co-OC. Streeter's biggest recruit of course, was none other than Trevor Lawrence.

Take this as you will. ??

Thanks Bill. I am obviously not omniscient, but there were a few little details I threw in there I had heard in the last couple of months, some other details regarding recruiting, etc.
Most of what I read when the story broke this morning from supposed reputable news sources was mostly exaggerated, as was almost every other meltdown thing I read here.

Yeah, did you read that bio OU put out today?

See. Almost sounded like fantastical propaganda.

Some really juicy, sugary Kool-Aid! ??

Actually most of what I read on news sites when the story broke this morning was highly exaggerated, including Bates' info, as was most of the borderline meltdown b.s. I read on here and some message boards.

Master Bates, is that you?

Jk

So, like Dwight Schrute?

Not an “assistant head coach” but an “assistant to the head coach”?
