2nd and long play calling?

Oct 31, 2021, 3:57 PM

We seem to be willing to run on 2nd and 10 nearly 90% of the time. I know you want to set up a manageable 3rd down but don’t remember this to be the norm from previous years. Just seem to be very predictable right now, which seems to be an issue.

I guess you just got back from Siberia because this year has zero to do with previous years.

Do you have the numbers backing 90%, because just based on what

I can recall in my head it sure seems like we pass more on 2nd and long, especially 2nd and 10. That's pretty much typical across all levels of football, and I don't think we're much different. That's not to say we never run on 2nd and 10 to cross guys up, but I honestly don't think 90% runs is a real number.

Hey, that is better than the WR screen.

I must really not want to do my work today....

FSU game

2nd & 14 Shipley run gains 2 yards
2nd & 12 pass
2nd & 9 pass
2nd & 8 pass
2nd & 10 Mafah run gains 3 yards
2nd & 1 Shipley run gains 6 yards
2nd & 10 Shipley run gains 10 yards
2nd & 11 pass
2nd & 4 pass
2nd & 6 Mafah run gains 1 yard
2nd & 9 Shipley run gains 7 yards
2nd & 9 Shipley run gains 22 yards
2nd & goal from 2 Shipley run gains 2 yards - TD
2nd & 14 pass
Halftime
2nd & 9 pass
2nd & 10 Mafah run gains 3 yards
2nd & 3 Mafah run gains 6 yards
2nd and 12 DJ run gains 3 yards
2nd & 9 pass

That looks like great balance to me. It keeps

the defense guessing.

Playcalling is not what ails us. People are so hyperfocused on our plays when they don't work, but if you watch football at any level you can question calls in any and every game. It's kind of funny that fans of all teams immediately jump on playcalling when their team loses (and our case wins).

Fans of any team say, "we're so predictable" when things don't go well. That's because they hyperfocus on their team every week, and they see the base offense every game. They see something they recognize and say, "I can predict our plays!". Nonsense. Most every single time they're saying, "I knew we were going to run that" only when a play fails.

People generally don't have a clue what play we're going to run, and this thread is a good example. They see a play or two that blows up, and all of a sudden they claim they're guessing every play. Bull.

The stats you provided are a great example. On 2nd and long, a defensive coordinator looking at our trends sees a 50/50 split between run and pass, and there different running plays and passing plays being called within that 50/50 split.

We haven't been a line-up and just run our stuff and overpower everyone team - not at any point during the 6.75 years of the Elliott era. We have been a team that charts our own tendencies very well, and in the course of games we've broken those tendencies. Its a constant evolution that changes every game.

And this is how we've been one of the most prolific offenses in college football through a 6-yr run in the playoffs. Elliott has done a great job keeping defenses guessing, and that's why he's nationally lauded. Google it.

Again, the clear issues we're having this year are in execution.

When a WR screen blows up because a blocker stood there and watched, is that the playcall or execution? When a RB is met at the line of scrimmage by a DL manhandling an OL, is that the playcall or execution? When the QB drops back, and as he's getting his feet set there are 3 defenders on him, is that the playcall or execution? When a receiver is open and a ball hits him on the hands but he drops it, is that the playcall or execution? If a QB drops back and has time, but forces a ball into his primary receiver who's double-covered while another receiver on the other side of the field has separation, is that the playcall or execution?

I think I just described several of the issues we've been seeing with our offense, and those have occurred much more than at any point in the previous 6 years. Therein lies the bulk of our offensive issues.

Execute better, like we did in the first half Saturday (~280 yards), and the offense will hum like we've all become accustomed to.

Again, the playcaller hasn't forgotten how to call plays. The team needs to execute those plays better.

I just don't see how Tony could complain about how bad they've been on 3d down when he gives the 1st down away 99% of the time with that stupid run up the middle like clock work. Then he will call that pass play to the short side of the field, and it's always behind the line of scrimmage, and there is always two or three defenders just standing there waiting on it, and it gets blown up in the face of who ever is there to take the pass. There is two of our 3 downs just waisted with facing a 3d and 10, and sometimes, 3d and 9....
