'24 WR Recruiting

4

Feb 23, 2023, 5:19 PM

I'm interested on the general TNet consensus for WR recruiting in '24...

The Braylon Staley article from earlier in the week mentioned that we would be taking only 1 WR this cycle. I'm not a fan of this. I know we currently sit at 87 out of 85 scholarships going into spring camp, but I truly believe by the end of next season we will need at least 2 WR in the '24 class.

We've offered 5-6 WR so far in the '24 class: 5 Star ATH Mike Matthews (Not sure if we're targeting him at WR or DB which is why I gave a range rather than a concrete 6. We don't let players go both ways. It's arguably the biggest reason why we missed out on former 5 Star and Freshman All-American Malaki Starks), 5 Star WR Ryan Wingo, 4 Star ATH Johnathan Paylor, 4 Star WR Alex Taylor, 4 Star WR Terrance Moore, and unranked (soon to be 3-4 Star) Braylon Staley.

I hope we land Staley, but I'd like us to still target Paylor and Taylor assuming that Matthews is being targeted on by Conn or Reed. Despite landing Toriano Pride Jr., I don't think we have a strong enough recruiting presence to land Wingo, but Taylor and Paylor are both in our backyard (NC). Paylor fits that small slot body type that we've been missing since Renfrow and what Nathaniel Joseph was supposed to be for us, had he not left to stay home in Miami. Taylor was the first WR offer, and we've been high on his list for a while. It would be a shame to cut him loose after such a longstanding relationship.

Yes, we took 4 WR in the '23 class, but I don't think that should dissuade us from taking at least 2 WR this class. If anything, I believe we would benefit from increased attrition at that position considering all the shortcomings that room has had through the past two seasons (whether it was their fault or not is a different argument). That's just my 2 cents on the matter though. I would love to know what y'all think about it. Maybe I'm right, or maybe I'll eat my own words as this new Air Raid System develops the current room into the next Megatrons, Jerry Rice's, and Tyreek Hill's.

If it was not for his opinion, there would not be a Tiger Board.

Someone made a good point yesterday that Staley may be referring to the fact that he is the “only one they’re offering at his position” meaning the X, Y, or Z WR spot. Frankly would make more sense since they offered at least 4 other WRs.

Interesting, I didn’t approach it from that sense, but that’s a really good point. He’s got that in between body type at 6’0 so I wonder which spot he’d fill

I've seen him listed at 5'10"

Agree. Doubt we offer that many if we only wanted one.

Clemson has not been a program to just throw out a bunch of offers with no intention of accepting commitments.

We never know who all will leave the program after next season. So more WR spots could open up. Unfortunately, it will be too late in the recruiting process to sign any of these big time players. It sounds like we are going to get Staley. And then probably hop on somebody late like we did with Tyler Brown and Misun Kelley last year.

No more "fallback" recruiting please especially at WR. The position needs an upgrade...we need guys that can get open and catch the ball. I am hopeful Cade will be considerably more accurate than DJU but our WR's were rarely open and dropped lots of passes. We speed and guys that will compete and fight for the ball.

Unfortunately, if Clemson is not going to lead with NIL, most of the top guys are going somewhere else. Most of these kids are going to want to maximize their opportunities in college. These top level WRs are going to get lucrative NIL offers. It's probably going to be all about development and scheme for Clemson moving forward.

I completely agree with you regarding NIL, expectations need to be managed. My point was to move faster to new targets when it is apparent we aren't under serious consideration and not be scrambling in Nov/Dec. to just pick anyone. Heck if we get that late into the cycle, I really wish we would consider a portal pick-up instead if it was a good match.

I would really prefer we over sign at WR than wait for the eventual transfer out. Alex Taylor and Terrance Moore are fringe top 300-400 players as of right now. Their NIL options are not the same as Wingo’s. Paylor would be a challenge to land as well, but even with or arguably meek NIL presence we would still be ideal for a Taylor or Moore.

Kermits_Tiger1400,

Here's my take on 2024 Recruiting in regards to your post:
First, I would not take the "Braylon Staley article from earlier in the week" as Gospel, as far as Staley being the only WR we're planning on taking this year. There are several reasons: Some of them off the top of my head include:
1. The quote came from a recruit, not a Clemson staff member. Additionally, this article is the only article I've seen, (this year or any other year) that has even hinted of Clemson taking only one WR in a particular recruiting class .I don't think any Clemson staff member stated that we are only taking 1 WR. I think Staley may have misinterpreted what he was told. The closest thing I think a Clemson staff member might have told him was he was the only "Slot" WR we were taking--or with our new "Air Raid" focus, he was the only WR recruit that would have a "special role" (like focusing on both his "receiving" and his "running" skills)
2. I've been tracking Clemson recruiting for over 40 years. I've always a kept special interest & focus on WR recruiting. I NEVER REMEMBER ANY YEAR WHERE WE'VE ONLY TAKEN ONE WR, no matter how well stocked we've been. And, we often have taken a WR walk-on as well. During the Swinney years, most years we've taken at least 3 WRs (usually 2 outside WRs, & one slot).
3. For a variety of reasons, over the last 3 years I believe our WR roster (even with blue chip WR recruits) has under-performed. While I'm encouraged with the potential of the 2022 & 2023 classes, they are basically unproven (personally, I don't think even Antonio Williams is a proven commodity yet). IMHO, we are nowhere close to being able to shut down the the number of WRs we are going after for 2024. And it is particularly early in the recruiting year to be shutting down our recruiting of any position. Remember last year when our first recruit that committed was a WR, who after 9 months, suddenly de-committed around the time of our First Official Recruiting weekend in June 2022!
4. Everything I've read indicates both Johnathan Paylor and Alex Taylor are still very much in the mix for committing to Clemson. I'm pretty confident that the Clemson staff, particularly with a new offensive coordinator whose focus is on an "Air Raid" offense, is still looking for other possible WRs to bring in for 2024. I'm sure Coach Riley has a couple of WRs in Texas (or in the Big 12 region) that he may be interested in. No other article that I've read on any other board has implied we're pinning all our WR hopes on Staley, or just one WR.

I'll be glad to eat all my words if we only sign one WR recruit in 2024--Staley or anyone else! Just MHO!

I agree that it seems absurd to only take one. It’s why I posed the question. Thanks for sharing your thought! I really do hope we land Paylor more than anyone. He fits a mold that I really think we’ve been missing for some time now.
