2023 Recruiting Cycle

Mar 7, 2022, 7:20 AM

So far the 2023 recruiting cycle is off to a concerning start. Not necessarily due to the lack of commitments, we currently have one, Nathanial Joseph, who is outstanding and exactly what we need in a slot receiver.

What I see as concerning is the lack of interest we are generating with top 300 recruits. This weekends elite junior day was nothing like the others from the past 5-6 years, low numbers and lower level recruits. Next year we will see a significant number of starters on the defensive side of the ball (XT, Breese, Murphy, Simpson, Jones, Davis) leave which is usually viewed as an opportunity for top level recruits but as of yet it isn't translating to increased interest.

I see several factors creating a perfect storm for us. NIL, I just don't think we can compete in this area. The resurgence of UF and Miami is going to be a problem not to mention the success this year of UGA. Our recruiting within Georgia and Florida over the past 6-8 years has been outstanding but it will be much more difficult moving forward.

While I expect 2023 will be a very, very good year for us, with just a little better OL and quarterback play, we should have a solid shot at making the CFP. However, 2024 and beyond, it is looking debatable if regular trips to the CFP will be the norm anymore.

I have followed recruiting very closely over the last 6 years and while the fluidity of the 2022 class certainty was understandable with Venables and Elliot departing right before early signing day, something is different now. It was interesting to see so many of the attendees this weekend get offers, that has not been an usual occurrence.

Am I the only one seeing something different so far?

I agree with the OP. We are seeing headwinds this year with top recruits. Dont know if it is the staff shakeup, NIL or a shaky 2021 season but we definitely do not have the brand response we have seen in previous years. Hopefully our rebuilt staff will hit its stride but so far it is not going great and to say different one must overlook the facts.

Re: 2023 Recruiting Cycle

I feel similar. I don't know exactly why. It just doesn't feel like we stand a chance with signing the elite of the elite. It feels like we are regressing in the recruiting department, with the truly elite players that is.

Top 100 recruits

2020: 10
2021: 6
2022: 4

Perhaps that trend reverses itself this year. I certainly hope that it does. I believe we will continue to primarily sign 4-5 stars every class. But I was hoping that our recent success would have launched us into a position where we sign top 4 classes every year, like an Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State.

Right now, I'm just hoping to see Spiller land a top RB commit. The excuse of having 3 high quality sophomore RBs no longer exists. He has to prove that he can sign an elite RB this year.

No position is more important than defensive line. We have a very small margin for error in this class. We have to land our top prospects. We are going to lose so many defensive linemen to the draft, especially at DE. We have to sign elite defensive linemen that can contribute early. We have to sign that Myles Murphy freak that can contribute immediately.

Orrrrr it proves that CJ is bad at recruiting...

He can't swing and miss on our top targets back to back years. That's should always be considered unacceptable at Clemson.

Re: or .......

Mar 7, 2022, 4:08 PM

Well, my understanding is that our coaches who recruit are assigned to regions, not to particular positions. So I am not sure how us not getting a RB who might not be in Spillers region is the fault of Spiller.

Now, if Spiller strikes out with all of his recruits in a given year, then maybe he needs some additional training. But your comment that he can't cut it if we don't get a RB that he may not even be recruiting is kind of an asinine comment.

Re: or .......

Mar 7, 2022, 4:13 PM

Spiller is 100% involved in the recruiting of every single RB target. He handles the majority of communication and relationship building for our RB targets.

Yes I also seen something different. We have offered more than one running back, we have offered more than 1 or 2 DT's , we ahve offered several monsters on the OL. Not those 6'2 or 3 lineman but 6'6" and 7 three hundred pound guys.
Let the process work. Recruits want to see the new coaching staff. They want to see how they interact wirh the players. The spring game fir once will be important. Let the process work.

ND has a whole new staff but they already have 10 commits so I guess their process is working while ours is TBD

The difference is that almost anyone would look better compared to Brian Kelly before they ever do anything and anyone replacing BV will have to prove himself. ND is experiencing addition by subtraction and our guys have high standards to live up to. Apples and oranges.

Re: 2023 Recruiting Cycle

Mar 7, 2022, 9:06 AM

If Clemson FB returns to the CFP or near CFP status in 2023, then we'll do well with the top 300 recruits.

If we simply have another good season (aka 2021), then who knows how well we'll do. I mean, we'll do well anyways, but whether the 2023 class is back in the stratosphere or simply very very good (like the 2022 class) ... IMO ... is highly dependent on the success of the 2023 season.

Not suggesting that my comments reflect any special insights.

At the end of the day, that's the ONLY thing it's about at this point.

You think Etienne actually picked UF over Clemson for any reason other than money?
That team's on their like fifth head coach in a decade.
TA&M paid 30 mill for their next class.
There are reports that TN has donors that are pulling 20+ mil to buy their next class.
UGA's been buying players for years.
...so has Bama.
...so has Clemson.
You think (Clemson-player) poverty-stricken CJ Spiller was driving an escalade around Clemson because he found it abandoned on the side of the road?

As long as the NFL is only taking <1% of CFB players, the new trend will continue to be "pay-to-play".

The NCAA is dead. Long live the king.

Remember when Korey Forman committed early?

Mar 7, 2022, 11:27 AM

How did that work out?

We won two national championships with classes like we’re seeing in 2022-23.

We went 10-3 with the best classes in our history.

This is what is wrong with t-net. A person posts a generalization which is completely wrong but presents it as correct without any facts.

The last class did not have 1) the usual amount of star power 2) Did not meet our needs at DE or RB 3) Had more reach players than any class in memory

The ratings may be similar but the make up of the class was far weaker than any class in the last few years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Needs at RB and DE?

Mar 7, 2022, 2:00 PM

We needed a 4th string RB. We signed one. What need to we have at DE this year with XT and KJ returning. Mascoll has a Covid year he can take in 2023. Maybe we should see who we do sign this year and how those still buried on the depth chart at DE develop before we begin declaring needs

Re: Remember when Korey Forman committed early?

Mar 7, 2022, 2:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Remember when Korey Forman committed early? ]

What facts am I missing?

The OP lamented that our 23 class was moving slowly. I pointed out a very specific instance where getting a huge top early commit didn’t pay off. And that perhaps a flurry of earl activity was not always a great thing. You could go back to the Nkemdiche saga as another example of a top guys who pulled the trigger early then jumped ship.

I said that our two national titles came in the heels of recruiting classes ranked about where our 2022 class ended up.

That’s a fact.

I also pointed out that our two highest ranked classes in history produced the least satisfying and least productive season in many years.

These are not generalities, these are facts.

I believe it's important for us to at least get into the playoffs to keep our name out there. Having another season like last year will really hurt recruiting.

Re: 2023 Recruiting Cycle

I think the OP had a very balanced post. Here is the thing, its all changed due to the NIL money. So here is the simple question:

Does little ole Clemson have the alumni money to compete with NIL at OSU, TX, aTm, UGA, ND, etc?

I have no idea, Im a purple iptay donor, so have no idea how many really big guys we have to fund upcoming classes.

You win two Championships in three years you are going to have your choice of recruits. When you have your worst season in a decade and then lose both of your coordinators recruits are going to take more of a wait and see approach. If we make it back to the playoffs this year recruiting will reflect that, if we have another down year expect to be disappointed.

I was at practise Saturday and enjoyed the day. Was able to speak with several parents of recruits and was favorably impressed. Knew we were making several offers, an intentional change in strategy to some of the more recent years. Loved the family crowd, friendliness of the coaches/staff to those of us on the sidelines, effort of the players and excited to see our guys back at work. Not meaning to be insulting, but other than watching football on TV and reading the internet, would be very curious about your level of information with the program. Saw Coach more involved in drills than anywhere I have ever seen. Saw players getting coached and corrected, making sure all are involved to the same level of detail. Coaching and giving life lessons. Man, what a way to spend my Saturday morning.

Re: 2023 Recruiting Cycle

Mar 7, 2022, 11:28 PM

Well said. I 100% notice a difference, and I have been following recruiting fairly closely since 2018.

I absolutely see a sudden drop in Clemson's brand influence over top 300 recruits. It used to be that we were almost always in the discussion, and we would zoom in and had some of the best closing rates in the industry. We had articles written about how few decommitments Clemson had, and how many top recruits we hit on when we targeted them.

Now, it's almost like we are TRYING to get the top 300 guys, and mostly on the outside looking in. It's an odd shift, and I don't really have an explanation for it. I have to feel that NIL is the biggest factor, with the emergence of UGA and our down year last year playing a factor. It just seems like there has been a culture change in college football with NIL, and we are not part of that change.

I am betting, however, that Dabo's consistent and genuine message will again win out and show we can last at the top. We will continue to attract the right guys. And maybe we are going to look more like 2011 - 2015, I dunno. Lots of 3 star recruits making significant impacts, and landing some of the key fish who become superstars. Perhaps this is a regression to the "norm" of the earlier days, and I am sure it is a comfortable position for Dabo to be in. I don't think Dabo envisions his culture like a UGA or Alabama, raking in the 5 stars left and right (seemingly) and always in that discussion. I just don't think he cares about that. But as a result, I think we do end up in the discussion, just in a different way.

So maybe there's the brightside. We need to make it through this rough patch right now.

There is no doubt Dabo is ELITE and we will remain ELITE.
