I remember those days so well. I started going to Clemson with my parents in the mid 50's.
I will never forget this day:
Jim Phillips took his camera directly to Pell’s house and they set it up in the living room in a cozy spot. Jim started rolling the tape and asked Pell point blank, “Charley, rumor has it that you’re headed to the University of Florida. What is your response to that?”
Pell calmly looked into the camera and said, “Tiger fans, this is your old buddy, Charley Pell. I wouldn’t lie to you. Charley Pell is here to stay. I’m a Clemson Tiger.”
Less than 24 hours later, Pell was boarding a University of Florida plane at Greenville/Spartanburg Airport as the new coach of the Gators. Clemson fans were stunned at first, then angered. The vile directed at Pell (rightfully so) was so bad you would have thought Pell was the leader of Iran or Russia.
Our next door neighbor was a Florida Alumnus and came home early that day. He was happy, celebrating,rubbing it in and thought it was hilarious. We told him it was not a d bit funny.

He was a helluva coach and with great memory and organizational skills from what I've heard .
Check out the pack of smokes in shirt pocket . Some coaches used to smoke and chew during games .

Pell turned the corner in recruiting. He started what ford finished. I remember the banners " give em hell pell" its a different world now.

Hence the name.( Tiger since pell) he darted off to Miami the next year and a young man from Alabama that was running the defense took over. He did pretty good.

Got to Clemson late for picture day in '78. Waited til after practice and Coach Pell accommodated us by holding our 9 month old son for a picture. Then got pictures w/ Fuller, Butler, and Bostic. No jerseys, just shorts and tees. Coach saved the day.

If memory serves, that young man was the offensive line coach. Danny ford was never a coordinator.

Parker turned us around and pell made us a winner but Danny was the total package for us. Probation way laid our Ascension into the football elite but the 1989 team was a helluva team and if Danny had stayed we would have been part of the elite. Now we have a chance to stand alongside Alabama, FSU, Ohio state, and a few others to be a perennial power. Let's go tigers beat bammer.

What I like about the picture with Charlie

is that it's from the 77 season (Archie Reese #65 graduated in the spring of 78) which was the year Clemson Football broke through. Charlie has them gathered there at the top of the hill (under the old scoreboard which had been there forever,like an old friend) ready to run down and maybe telling the guys something like "Lets hit it boys! We're gonna show the whole damm college football world who we are !".There have been some bumps along the way but for the most part Clemson hasn't looked back since.
