The speed of that group was off the charts

Definitely the best group that came through Clemson.

I thought John Johnson would dominate in the NFL. There is a great recruiting story about how he got to Clemson.

Levon played for the Steelers at 280/290# without losing much of his speed. Check out his pro videos. He was on a mid 90's Steeler LB Corp that rated 7th best all time. The only other one I remember was Greg Lloyd.

Kirkland , Greg Lloyd , Chad Brown and Earl Holmes.
They were savages. Throw in backups like Olsavsky and Carlos Emmons . That was a great group.

Not sure if this is a test or not...Other than Kirkland...none of those are listed in the 1990 Roster!

2 deep: OLB: Kirkland, Simmons, Mader.
Bandit: Johnson, Sheppard, Bussie
LB: Brewster, Jackson, Calhoun
LB: McDaniel, O'Brien, Scott
Reserves: Buford, T. Davis, Derriso, Howard, Long, McNeil, Nowicki, Trull

OK, you are talking Steelers, not Clemson!

We should be recruiting top LB’s every year! Rotating them like the DL!

Never will forget Wayne Simmons picking off

Peter Thom Willis at FSU in 1989 and taking it to the house about 80 yds. It still sticks in my mind how athletic he was making that interception. Then he ran like a gazelle carrying the ball like a loaf of bread in his palm. And he was just a freshman if I’m not mistaken. Man what a group of linebackers that was!

The inside of that D was no slouch either with Chester McGlockton, Vance Hammond and Rob Bodine. I remember Hammond was just a mammoth of an individual. So tall and just a huge guy. No fat.

McGlockton (6-5 310, soph) was listed as the third LE After Al Richard (6-3 265, Soph) and Tyrone Simpson (6-3 270, Soph)!

Hammond (6-7 285, Sr) was listed as first RE

Bodine (6-1 245, Jr) was listed as first NG.

Of course, Chester moved up as the season went on!

Alex Dial (6-5 265, Jr) was the only DL signed that year as a junior when coming in!

That was the end of a dominant era. Recruiting tanked when Hatfield came in. I’m convinced we would’ve won at least another championship if Ford had stayed at the helm through the 90’s. He really had built a juggernaut.

Clemson basically played a 50 defense (5 man front) except they had the athletic outside linebackers (defensive ends) playing in defensive end positions on the los but upright. You are reading Hammond as an end but really he was a hand in the dirt interior lineman. The outside backers were more in an end alignment at the snap but could come or drop into coverage. Often the field side backer was in flat coverage/contain and the boundary side was coming, functionally more like a 4-3. Our outside backers were so athletic though they could play that 5 man front look but functionally be playing a 4-3 or even a 3-4, when both outside ends/backers played coverage. That was a stout versatile bunch and a good scheme.
